Just upped my membership thanks to the Jeff Sharlet interview. Had a conversation recently with someone I have known for years. They have fallen deep into the Q-Anon rabbit hole in the last few months - to my utter shock and horror. Rather than run a mile, I am looking to strengthen my understanding of this phenomenon in order to apply some Anthony Magnabosco "street epistemology" to him in the hopes of steering him gently in another direction. Also, make no mistake: I consider it self interest. I am a teacher and this year and last year I have spent some time talking about the 50th anniversaries of various moon-shots, notably Apollo 11 and 13, which I remember well. I have a disturbing vision - hopefully not a premonition - of living in a world years from now where my memories are considered the fringe delusion and the conspiracies taught in schools. I was on top of a ladder painting the house during that interview, and there was a moment where Noah and I were one, sharing a shudder across time and space. I couldn't move for a while, standing there with the paintbrush dripping onto the plants below, when in quick succession my boomer brain dismissed these people as loonies and my Trump-era OS said, "no - this is a thing now." It should be noted, alarmingly, that I live in Australia where I thought we were more sensible, but if my friend can be caught up in the cult, thousands of kilometres and a cultural and optical world away, I see with cold, crystal clarity that It Can Happen Here.

2020-07-02 17:24:40 +0000 UTCI'm not sure if this will make Noah feel better or worse but I'm a few hours upstate from NYC and we have the same problem with finding people to fix foreign cars. You either go to the dealer you bought it from or drive 45mins-1hr to find a mechanic to fix a foreign made car. Upstate new York pretty much has the the same out look on foreign cars as Georgia
