Wrestling the Bear

Of course, as soon as he’d started going to that gym, big beefy Bob had become “the Bear” to all the regulars. He had also become a bit of a pain in the neck with his boasting that he could beat anybody in a fair fight.

“What about the not-so-fair kind of fight?”, old Ambrose had asked.

“Oh, you wouldn’t want that, Gramps!” the Bear had answered.

“Well, maybe I would,” Ambrose had said.

The two men were having the talk in the dressing room, late one night. This was the slow day of the week, and they were the only gym users around.

The Bear looked at old Ambrose quizzically:

“What’s the matter, Gramps? You a masochist or something? You get your kicks by getting beaten up?”

Ambrose smiled:

“Well, actually, I do get my kicks fighting other guys. That’s all you need to know. So, are you up to a little tussle?”

The Bear was taken aback by Ambrose’s assured manner. Well, maybe the old man did like to get a beating, after all.

And in a way, he was right. Ambrose had been in the Marines and he had been in many fights over the years. He knew many ways to win a fight, fair or not fair, and he wanted to see if this boastful bear of a man had anything in him.

After a couple of minutes on the mat, Ambrose had his answer – he was all talk and no business. He was slow and obviously relied on his great mass and size to overpower his adversaries. Ambrose could have made him helpless a dozen different ways, but he decided not to be too hard on him.

And so, a couple more minutes later, the Bear had found himself with one foot in the air, hanging from one of the gym’s climbing ropes.

“Bwah ha ha ha ha!” he cried. “Stop that tickling! That’s not fair!”

“We hadn’t agreed to a fair fight,” Ambrose pointed out, without missing a beat. “If you want me to stop, you know the magic word – uncle.”

“No way… Ha, ha ha! No way I’m… Ha, ha, ha! No way I’m going to say that! Ha, ha, ha! Stop! Oh, please, stop!”

Ambrose wondered how long it would take for the big, bad, Bear to admit defeat. He hoped it wouldn’t be too soon. This was the most enjoyable fight he’d been in in years!
