They had met in unusual circumstances - when monsieur Géron's eldest son had become engaged to Colonel Duval's youngest daughter. The two young people had met at a ball organised by their wive's circle, a serious affair that was set up with the express purpose of finding the young men of the local bourgeoisie good wives and the prim mademoiselles fresh out of convent school proper husbands. They had hit it off immediately. Funnily enough, so had their fathers.
In a way, that was sheer luck, as there was very little chance that a busy businessman like monsieur Géron would have met a retired army Colonel. But there had been instant attraction between the two mature gentlemen, which had very quickly developed into a full-blown affair. Now that their children were married, the two men had plenty of excuses to see each other, and they took full advantage of that.
Very early on, monsieur Géron had found a surprisingly docile in the retired army man, whom he would have thought very much a take-charge person. Quite the opposite. One day, monsieur Géron declared that since he was the father of the groom, that gave him authority over the father of the bride and the colonel had acquiesced by lowering his eyes and telling him : "I suppose, so. You are the master, then."
And both men had found great contentment in those clearly defined roles.
