I think I have fine tuned my first ground texture to a point where I can show it. This is my dark earth texture base. It took my a while to find the right colors and tones to make it work.
I also will make a lighter version which is more sand color. These will be the base for either bare dirt ground or adding plants, like grass and weeds, or other details like roads for later versions. And for now these will become the starting point for the ground tiles for the village buildings.
To me it is important that the texture details are visually interesting but not too distracting and the details like rocks and optional leaves are also noticeable but not too prominent. They should be readable even at a distance like when you stand overlooking your gaming table and are not up close.
My first attempts were more "realistic" renditions of nature but I found them to be too chaotic to read. If you look at a small section of dirt ground or grass it's all chaos :-) This is a more stylistic approach between illustration and reality.
I am hoping this will be both visually pleasing and also supporting the atmosphere of your gaming table or display diorama.
