A good rig prototype

I have been trying out a couple of version of splitting the sailing rig and making it removable. Most involved cutting slots into the mast and hooking the sails and ratlines into the mast. But I didn't like this approach, as you had to cut the slots very precise and also I feared the (paper) hooks would tear at some time when used a lot.

I finally arrived at this solution where the sails and ratlines are held by "rings" which just slide over the mast. The ratlines are then tucked into a slot pocket on the hull side. It's all very simple and efficient.

The ratlines shown are maybe too "big" for such a small boat. I will make versions with a simpler and more fitting solution, but this approach I can use for all future ships, from the sloop to the huge galleon!

I yet have to add a mast boot part but even without the mast staying in position quite nicely due to the rat lines. The thing parts extending the sails will help to position the sail as if blown by the wind to a side. If you want a little better build, just cut them off and replace them with thread! :-)

Basically this way you have the choice to either go full pure paper build or pimp up the rig with cloth sails and thread ropes.

OK time to start working on a final and textured build!

Happy building,

Chris

Thank you Bill. The model length is apx 8". It's larger than a jolly boat but smaller than the upcoming sloop (which will be the first with cannons). I see it as a fishing boat that is converted to a pirate raiding vessel if needed! For the 25-30mm figure scale I am guessing there will be more need of smaller ships. How many galleons will fit onto one table? :-) But then again a duel of two big ships could also be interesting!

I'm looking forward to seeing how these turn out. It is a size between the rowboat and ships that I haven't seen. Love the sails. Good work!
