2D boats is fun!

I have started converting my 3D ships to 2D. Went with the jollyboat first and had to adjust quite a bit (esp with the dirt, shadows and old wood) and then decided to add a bulwark "top border". Looks much better than just taking the plain deck texture.

This sample page features the mix modifiers (a quick setting for getting some variety on one single page). Of course you can manually adjust which "stuff" (ropes, oars, grid) you want to be printed and which color modifers and weathering you want to use.

I have also added the option of a black and a white border (although the white one isn't seen on this page :-) ).

But you guys also asked about an ocean background for fast and easy rectangular cutout. So I made a second page. And here I have some questions.

First of all I am going to provide two ocean versions. A lighter one for less ink usage and a darker one looking more real maybe.

But with the jollyboat (and maybe with the small rowing boat) I don't know what the better grid alignment is? The one on the left has full grid squares centered and the one on the right has the grid axis centered, thus allowing two rows of minis (although the basis will go over deck so to speak).

So what are you comments on this issue? Or should I just leave both versions as shown? If I go with the one on the right I only have space to put one ship on the page. With the other (or with this mixed version) I can put two boats on one page.

Let me know! I will go on converting the other ships ...

Have fun and keep building :-)

The water color is optional, so you can choose if you want caribbean water or atlantic and kill your printer ink :-) Yeah I agree now, the jollyboats were for two rows or rowers. Makes much more sense.

If, in real life, the boats would hold passengers (rowers) two abreast, then I think the gridline should be centered on the boat axis to allow this for the minis. IMHO you should go with the lighter ocean color - easier to see the grilines, and easier on the ink usage.
