In preparation for things to come I am working on stone and rock textures.
One thing that will help me is a procedural pattern generator I am developing. Regular cut stone walls are easy to do but I also want have more irregular patterns available.
The above pic show possible patterns I can generate varying tile and cut grid sizes.
Here is a first try a painting it with a texture. I can make this a flat pattern or - like here - add some variation in the height of the stones, to emulate an older wall with displaced stones. The color is just variations of gray and looks a bit flat but I will add more realistic colors for different projects.

Here I tried applying more real color variations and weathering. I sampled the colors from a picture of a wall to get a realistic choice. I am always surprised how different the colors can be, mixing yellowish stones with the gray ones. For the dirt I added different layers of grunge and dripping stripes.

Something I need to still work on are cracks as an option and then I got regular patterned walls and floors covered.
Next I need to create an irregular or "broken" stone (as opposed to cut stone) generator, that will open up many possibilities for medieval buildings!
That's it for today. Until next time have fun and keep building :-)
