Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Comments

Oh shoot, I didn't even notice the helmet thing! But that's a great point and your thoughts definitely make sense to me! Thanks for watching.

kaiielle

I'm excited to get to that!

kaiielle

Well. I ended up watching 2 MCU movies with characters with baby legs back to back this week. That was unexpected. Saw this opening weekend with my son-in-law whose favorite characters are Ant-man and Wasp. We both enjoyed it but didn’t love it. I missed the smaller scale story (no pun intended), I don’t particularly care for the over reliance on CGI, and they broke their own science rules. There’s a reason Scott and Hope keep their masks on when they change size. That is critical to surviving the enlarging or shrinking process. And the helmets came off and on randomly whatever size they were. That might be nitpicking but it pulled me out of the story in the theater and this time around changed nothing. When you pseudo science, you need to stick to the established rules you’ve created or creatively explain why they don’t apply right now. But neither occurred here. My verdict, I enjoy it well enough, but it’s not high on a future rewatch list. I enjoyed the reaction. Re-watching with your pleasant demeanor always enhances the watch. Looking forward to the next one!

Finally made the time to watch this. What a fun reaction. I am beyond excited to see what you think of Loki S2! 🫨

Nestor Custodio

Yeah, he wasn't great. Felt bad for Corey Stoll and even the character of Darren.

kaiielle

It did not, thanks for following up though. I had forgotten how terrible MODOK was 🤦🏻‍♂️

boss435

You make a very good point!

kaiielle

I saw comic pics of Modok afterwards and yeah, I can see what they were trying to do, it just didn't work. Totally understand the sentiment you share at the end there, like Kang was first shown way back in Loki Season 1, but between that and this movie, nothing? It's definitely lacking the tight connection that we had for a lot of the Infinity Saga. This saga definitely feels a lot more like things are stand-alone with smaller connections. So far, at least.

kaiielle

So, did your opinion change or no? 😏

kaiielle

This movie would've been so much better if they'd kept a "heist movie" element like the first two and involved Scott's original crew in some capacity. I felt nothing at the end of the movie which for me, is worse than thinking it was bad.

Rish

For me this is where the MCU is starting to make things meh, Kang was great but most of the movie was subpar and eventhough Modok is comic accurate it didnt translate well onscreen, should left his mask on. Kang being a time traveling being with tech from the future and suppose to be the new big bad losing too basic heros whos only powers are shrinking and getting bigger. I know when Antman is large he might not take as much damage but all the tech is future and no ones getting hurt, he only got hurt when Kang stomped his helmet. But Kang gets pushed back by Wasp stupid little wrist blasters ? I know the heros are suppose to win but theres no consequences or anything someone should have died Kang was easily killng everyone insight with ease. It just seems like a bunch of solo movies or sequels that isn't moving along any story or the next big thing.

Chris Elkins

Ah, okay. I gotcha. Thanks!

William

2.2 ⭐ out of 5 is their rating system.

kaiielle

Is that good or bad? I’m unfamiliar with letterbox.

William

Glad you had a good time with it! The 2.2 average rating on Letterboxd came as a bit of a surprise to me.

kaiielle

I thought I recognized her, that's awesome! And looks like I'll have to get that book for myself one day. Thanks for watching!

kaiielle

Yeah, the delivery was so good.

kaiielle

Yeah, you're definitely not wrong!

kaiielle

My editor is one of those people that doesn't like that he was beaten by ants. My perspective on that is... a LOT of something can overpower pretty much anything. 😉

kaiielle

Ahh neat! Thanks for the recommendation.

kaiielle

I’m definitely one of…if not the biggest MCU fan here. I saw this opening night and thought it was utter garbage. Will watch the reaction later today to give it another chance but in my opinion there’s nothing redeeming about this film.

boss435

Since you mentioned that you would love a show about the economics of the blip, that basically is the premise of "The Leftovers" an amazing show by the creator of "Lost" that id highly recommend!

Manuel

I enjoyed Quantumania, but a lot of people shit on it though. Majors killed it in his roles as He Who Remains and Kang. A lot of people were pissed off he was defeated by Ants😂. The next MCU movie I believe is Guardians of the Galaxy 3. I think it’ll be your favorite of the Guardians Trilogy.

One of my favorite lines on any medium is in this film: "I don't have to win. We just both have to lose." I also understand your critique about the quantum realm but in defense of their approach, that's how discovery works, you know? Look in the sky from earth and space looks like it's just the moon, the sun, and stars forever. But thanks to telescopes, satellites, and developed technology, we now know there's a shit ton in space and the universe is massive and infinite. Same with the quantum realm. We started with what Hank knew in part 1, found out a little bit more when Hank rescued Janet in Part 2, and we learned time travel was possible in the quantum realm in Endgame, and now we see there's civilizations in AM3. Maybe it wouldn't have felt like such a shock if Janet had talked a bit about it in AM2 or maybe if they showed a small hint of that in AM2, idk 🤷‍♀️

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Probably my favorite of the Ant-Man Trilogy. Jonathan Majors was such a good choice for Kang. He has such a calm voice but man is he vicious.

At first glance you might not recognize Jentorra with the makeup, but that's Katy O'Brian. You saw her in The Mandalorian when she was the Imperial officer Elia Kane. This movie was in theaters right before we got the third season. It's interesting to see her as one of the good guys this time. Scott's book Look Out For The Little Guy is an actual book you can purchase and bring home. They didn't say her codename, but Cassie in her suit is known as Stature. That’s one of her comic codenames, but sometimes they would also call her Stinger. My favorite funny moments were Scott's audiobook, Quaz's powers, "M.O.D.O.F.K.", “I’ll drive", Veb running with the pack, Scott hugging Godzilla, and the Quantumnaut with the bridge code. I wanted someone to say the term "alternate dimensions" in the MCU. I'm glad Hank finally did. Even though we don’t see Scott’s friends in this movie, Veb was portrayed by David Dastmalchian. He previously portrayed Kurt, and this time he got to speak with his real accent. By the way, in the same year we met two Marvel characters who are all about their holes. First it was Veb, and then it was The Spot in Across The Spider-Verse.

I had fun with it and seeing it in IMAX 3D was probably the best way to see it. But, since most people were shitting on it, I stayed away from watching others' reactions to it. I watch reactions to lift my spirits, not to watch people be disappointed or crap on stuff I like. Some jokes fell flat for me, but they didn't ruin the movie.

Thadman

I had way more fun with this than most. I’ll just leave it at that. 👍🏼
