Yeah I don't mind at all that we got the origin stories so "late"!

kaiielle

Yes, the three back-to-back (and also Ariel) are so good!

👀👀👀

kaiielle

Haha no worries at all! The episode structure was done very well.

kaiielle

Nice!!

kaiielle

Woop woop! Understandable that it's your favourite.

kaiielle

I agree!

kaiielle

LOL it was so good! Love her so much.

kaiielle

He really is!

I said before how Josh Whedon shows are a slow burn taking time to get going. Eight episode is arguably a couple later than normal for him to really flesh out the characters, but it fits that pattern. It has one of my favourite Jayne moments. He cares far more for the crew then he likes to let on, as shown by his interaction with Mal before leaving. The pacing/editing of the story is so good. Weaving together the origins of the characters in a way that seamlessly fits combined with some great cuts and pans from the past to the present was great.

I think that Our Mrs. Reynolds, Jaynestown, and Out of Gas are such an amazing trifecta. There's good sci fi, humour, suspense, and a more of a background on the crew. Oh! I have a Macbook, so I can hear your commentary at full screen, while I watch the episode on my iMac on Full screen, Don't have those smaller screens to look at.

That's a really fun theory!

I'd heard a theory a while ago about Kaylee that since this is Joss Whedon, this show takes place in the same universe as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, so the supernatural is no stranger to it and that Kaylee is something like a technomancer or something where she actually "speaks" to machines. She's said something before about how machines just speak to her and here she says that her dad says she just has a natural talent and she'd never been in a ship like Serenity before, but she knew exactly what was wrong with it. Also, when she was feeling bad, sort of blaming herself saying that she should've taken better care of her (Serenity) and says something like "She usually lets me know when something's wrong or maybe she did and I wasn't paying attention..." I think Kaylee was supposed to be the same age as Jewel Staite at the time, which was 19, so she's pretty young and has a way with machines naturally, not from experience. I never heard any confirmation of this theory, but it's been floating out there since the show was cancelled. Just fun to think about.

This is NOT my favourite episode, that's still to come... 👀 But yeah, this episode is excellent, and probably my top two pick!

I won't say whether this episode is my favorite or not, because I don't want to influence your opinions accidentally. But I will definitely say it's ONE OF my favorites. I'm a sucker for this kind of storytelling, and something about the way they structured this episode made it very memorable to me. I'm having a lot of fun rewatching these all with you, even if my brain keeps wanting you to hurry and binge the rest so that I can binge the rest too. I suck at patience. ✌️🤓

BubblyRainbows

Yep, this is my favorite episode.

I love Nathan's Firefly easter eggs in Castle! That one is awesome, never caught that one while watching.

Richard Flores

You totally called it! This is my favorite episode. It's been fun so far, but this is where I fell in love with the show. Inara is SO gorgeous and sophisticated, but Kaylee is just so much more charming and sweet. Her origin is definitely my favorite as well. Glad you're enjoying the show, can't wait for the rest!

Julian Calzada

I love a good origin story mixed with a sense of present doom. Such good storytelling!

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

Mal is such a good captain - tailoring his interactions with Wash & Kaylee so that they can handle the situation, staying behind with no expectation of rescue to give his crew a better chance of surviving (yes there's the beacon, but Mal's just using that as an excuse to stay behind), and then the willpower needed to fix the ship... Couple of bits of trivia: - Zoe is not in the episode much because Gina Torres was getting married during filming. - Nathan kept the catalyser after the show was finished - it shows up in an episode of Castle on the shelf of his character on that show - After the show was cancelled, Alan (Wash) took the button from this episode and gave it to Joss, saying if you get this revived, push the button and we'll all be back Also, as a example of one of the (numerous) ways Fox screwed with the show - apparently, one of the notes they gave for this episode was to put it all in chronological order! 🤦(heard this on another Discord)

Heeeeey...I was just sitting down to eat...good fucking timing! This one is definitely one of my top...I don't know...three, maybe? This, the pilot, and...still one to come. So, yeah, three. And Kaylee's introduction? "I seen the trouble plain as day when I was down there on my back before." Fucking spectacular.

Steve Mercier

This is a *lot* of people's favourite episode. It wasn't mine initially (not sure if I should say which episode was since you haven't seen it yet), but I've since moved this to the top where it belongs. Nathan is incredibly good at acting as if he's dying.
