Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Emancipation [3x20] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Nations are ruled by people, who have the agendas, and those people change out and therefore the nations' agendas change. I suppose it comes to which perspective you're looking at it from. If you're on the outside, oversight IS what you'd want because you don't know nor trust the powerful people, but if you know and trust the powerful people, like Steve Rogers (probably the most trustworthy person we've ever seen) or if you are one of those powerful/powered people in question (The Avengers) and they're asking you to give up your agency to world leaders with agendas that rarely have been altruistic throughout history, I just don't think I would abdicate my body, abilities and responsibilities over to someone else, especially whom I don't trust. It almost feels like those holding the strings might just want a powerful "weapon" like The Avengers to meet out those agendas. I know it may sound arrogant, I suppose, but I just think I should have the right to try to help people with my abilities, especially if time is of the essence. Governments rarely move swiftly (unless they are doing shady things) because laws are meant to be thoughtful. This choice is available to us now on a much smaller scale like if you break a law in order to save someone else's life, you will usually get special dispensation (extenuating circumstances, self-defense, etc.) for taking the initiative to help. The Accords are like a middle-man to helping people. When you think of the dangers of untrustworthy people having power, it's understandable to think they should have checks on them, but I feel those checks can be done after they've acted. If there's a need, put them on trial for their actions rather them being stopped from trying to help beforehand.

People are ruled by agendas even more than nations. For me the climate where one guy without oversight, because he says he knows better, is showing how horrific that is in reality, isn't moving me towards less proper government oversight for powerful people as an idea.

Just started this reaction and I will say about Captain America: Civil War, I was on Team Cap before and, looking at the current political climate (like you said), I am even more so in the Cap camp. It is obviously not a cut and dry situation where one side it all right and the other all wrong, but what Steve said in that nations are ruled by people with agendas and agendas change. We've had a MAJOR real world lesson in that recently. I was more on his side originally because I have grown to have a "healthy" distrust of authority and nothing since then has made me lean more towards it, but has gone the other way since authority now is extremely untrustworthy. Now, onto the actual reaction.

For me this is the first episode to tie in a bunch from the movies mentioning the Sokovia Accords as much as it did why I never understood back in the day why they didnt want to say AoS wasnt part of the MCU. Lash bitch slapping Hive and saving Daisy was my favorite part the look on Hives face when he was damaged so easily was priceless. I know James is a bad guy but the "powered" chain whip was pretty awesome and his character is pretty funny .

Chris Elkins

I talk about that in the review.

Ha! This is becoming my Sunday breakfast tradition. Love this show. Not sure what show or season you're doing next (you may have said--I don't know), but can't wait until Season 4 (maybe my favorite season...).

Man, Daisy looks ROUGH by the end of this episode. Almost hard to watch. Good job makeup team! 😅 I'm so glad you keep being so surprised by the directions and quick pace the show takes. It's a lot of fun seeing your reactions and predictions!

All I could think as you talked last episode about Daisy being with Hive to the end of the show was "nope - just to next episode" 🤣 Bringing the Sokovia Accords into AoS feels like it has the potential for a much better exploration of the ramifications than the films bothered with (e.g. Spider-man: Homecoming takes place immediately after Civil War, but doesn't mention them *at all*). Like you, I'm much more on Tony's side regarding the Accords - I can understand aspects of Cap's position (though TBH, the main reasoning he actually gives in the film pisses me off), but from a practical standpoint doing nothing about powered individuals isn't an option. Also, from an objective standpoint, SHIELD using Inhumans on operations (or operating at all) with no oversight isn't all that great - just because Coulson's running things doesn't magically make it 'OK'. Regarding Lash being killed 'easily' by James, I can see what you mean - I originally had a similar view about Iron Man 3 with how easy Tony's suits were being destroyed by the extremis soldiers. Eventually though, I came to the understanding the extremely high temperatures they could generate (e.g. melting metal) was something that the suits couldn't really protect against, and I think it's similar here - James is getting that chain hot enough to burn, so I can see it being able to penetrate Lash's skin, and once that's done you've pretty much done the job.

Lash earlier in the season technically had not fully transitioned so his instinct to attack inhumans was half right. His instincts told him that they could be dangerous weapons so he killed them but really he is supposed to cure them with his powers. He even tells Lincoln in episode 7 that he is the cure. It does suck that we lost Andrew but he went out fulfilling his purpose as a doctor and as a inhuman. Civil war events definitely influenced this episode as we are now sharing info with the government and our base is no longer a secret. The accords were also introduced. We also have a reason why the avengers aren't helping with this. Cap is on the run and Tony with the government and Coulson explained that there would be alot of red tape to stop Hive and it would be too late if they tried to explain all this to higher ups. 21 and 22 are a two part finale.
