Hi everyone and WELCOME TO SEASON 4! [Direct link here.]

A great start so far and I'm really looking forward to your thoughts! It seems we've had a big visual effects upgrade too, which I'm enjoying season through season.

Cheers,

If you’re wondering why this season is suddenly so dark, that’s because this season aired all its’ episodes at 10pm. And before I go any further, that’s right. Before we saw him in The Last of Us as Tommy Miller, a lot of us knew Gabriel Luna as Robbie Reyes. Columbia Pictures made two Ghost Rider movies with Nicolas Cage as the first incarnation Johnny Blaze, but eventually Sony would sell the rights back to Marvel. (Now if only they would do the same with Spider-Man, but also Nic voices Spider-Man Noir. While we wait for Beyond the Spider-Verse, Nic is portraying another version of him for a live-action show coming to Amazon Prime Video this fall. The SSU is over, but I hope it doesn’t suck.) This new incarnation, however, is from a more recent comic run. And just like in the comics, Robbie is a Latino Ghost Rider from East LA wearing the iconic jacket with a rectangle in the center and driving a Charger like Dominic Toretto. Fun fact: during the cold open, the filming location was indeed in East LA and more specifically in Boyle Heights. That was Mariachi Plaza, and before we had a Metro Gold Line station there the infamous gazebo was also featured in a music video with Cypress Hill, Pitbull, and Marc Anthony. *On a more somber note, right next to the plaza we have a street dedicated to the late Mexican singer-songwriter Vicente Fernandez.

Ghost rider is nice surprise for the premiere and adds a supernatural element to the show which may seem odd but the timing is right after the civil war movie which means the Doctor strange movie is coming. Even if the show does not do direct tie ins they still try and remain thematically relevant. Magic and the supernatural are here so of course we get ghost rider and a ghost problem as well. The guy you thought was director is Davis who has been in shield since season 1 technically tho this is his second appearance. He was in 1x9 helping Fitzsimmons.

I don't care how many times I've seen it, the cold open to this season always gets me hyped

Let's go! Welcome to season 4, wich is considered the best AOS season by many (including me). Enjoy!

Ivan Chicharro

I think I do too. 😅 But I also already miss Brett Dalton.

kaiielle

Okay watched the reaction. I think you have Hive PTSD 😂

Always looked for the start of each new season as the writers manage to set up so many story threads whilst still being able to show what our team have been up to. Loved that with the new Director had our people separated into different teams, seemingly on purpose, it is Jemma that has identified this and is getting close to the director only as a means to monitor what is going on. And when May finds out the truth of the matter and Jemma 'orders' her, I believe there is a hint of pride in her response of "Yes Ma'am". Great start to the season!

This is such a good episode to watch reactions to - you get so many 'WTF is going on' looks on reactor's faces as the episode progresses! 🤣 So, another multi-meaning title in "The Ghost" - we have Mack saying that Daisy was a ghost whilst being 'hunted', Ghost Rider (obviously), and then whatever was released from the box also seems to fit that description. Lots of changes at S.H.I.E.L.D. as well - team's been reorganised, Jemma's now in a position of authority, lots more new people around. We also get to see what Radcliffe has been up to - he's built AIDA a body. Mallory Jansen does a very good job when AIDA has 'crashed' - the repetition of the vocal inflections and facial expressions in the loop is *perfect*. Also get a nice tie-in from the movies telling us that AI is banned as a result of Ultron (which does raise the question of how Tony can still use F.R.I.D.A.Y. 🤔) Regarding the VFX, we knew going into the season that Ghost Rider was going to be in this season, and IIRC there was apprehension from some that AoS wouldn't be able to do the VFX justice - I think we can safely say that any doubts were unwarranted! I don't think I've seen a reaction where the reactor's have commented anything other than variations of "that looks so f***ing cool". As for budget, AFAIK AoS's budget never meaningfully increased over the shows run - in fact it was cut significantly after S1, and there was also another cut before S5 (don't recall exactly when). Mark Kolpak's team just got better and better despite that (probably helped by improving technology admittedly, but also they've been doing this for three years at this point) - there's some breakdown shots of how Ghost Rider was made floating around somewhere. One other thing, AoS was moved to a new time slot this season, one hour later than previously, which allowed for the slightly more explicit parts of the opening scenes.

This season...this motherfucking season. I go back forth between this and season 5 as to which is my favorite...season 7 is up there, too, but that was their swan song, so I don't count it (but it's damn good). But this season has what just might be my favorite arc of the series, and my favorite episode. And we get the great Gabriel Luna as motherfucking Ghost Rider! Gooooooooood shit. Looking forward to rewatching this with you...in the morning.

Hyped for this season! Loved seeing Gabriel Luna show up and I was also really impressed by the visuals in this episode!

Yes for sure, AOS Rider and GR2 did the effects best even though GR1 did good with the classic comic look

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

Some fans love it, some hate it. I'm a Cage-ite so naturally I'm on the love side. Plus Ghost Rider's such an incredible character. I'll just leave it at that cuz I don't want to spoil either entity lol!

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

Gabriel Luna is so versatile, it's crazy. He deserves more credit but he's still just "oh that guy" to a lot of people.

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

LOL looks like I'll need to watch that movie at some point!

kaiielle

Okay, now, in true Nic Cage fashion: GHOST. RIDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! God I love this show.

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

Oh yeah I totally forgot there is a Ghost Rider movie (or I guess movieS based on your comment).

kaiielle

😂😂 Sorry, a bit of back-to-back today!

kaiielle

I'm still watching Firefly though! (well, in your review, but still!)

Sean Ellingham

FINALLY!! These are the best Ghost Rider effects IMO better than any of the movie versions . Gabriel Luna is a terrific actor as well.
