Firefly: Heart of Gold [Ep 13] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Hi everyone! Excuse the odd look for the thumbnail... 😂 I couldn't help but use it when I saw it. I can't believe there's only one episode left and then the movie! 😢 These 3 months have gone by a little too quickly, I guess. [Direct link here.]
Please enjoy!

Yeah it is an expectation spoiler, but since it's hard to avoid (because of syncing purposes), I just embrace it haha

For the record, I hate "previously on" recaps. They recap what's relevant to the current episode, so its just a spoiler for what's happening in the episode. It's like "oh! They're showing Niska on the 'previously on' I wonder if he'll be showing up again in this episode..."

"Don't know these folks, don't much care to"
"They're whores"
"I'm in" 🤣
As another reactor put it, "Jayne is such a simple man"
Having never seen the previously ons, I was shocked by how long it was before the episode started this time - can't imagine why anyone thought that much needed covering.
Lots of Inara/Mal stuff here obviously, but it's interesting that Mal was willing to help without requiring payment - was that as a favour to Inara, or because the Heart of Gold were 'independents'? I suspect it was a bit of both. Also interesting to note how Inara insists that he be paid - Mal looks genuinely hurt by that, and Inara can't look at him whilst saying it. Plus, it foreshadows her choice to leave at the end.

That was where I knew him from. And not just him... Its odd, just how many Firefly characters are also in Supernatural.

Yeah, I have to agree with you, this episode is abolutely about relationships. Wash and Zoe talking about children, Kaylee seeking validation since she doesn't feel any from Simon, the Inara/Mal/Nandi triangle.... Even something so simple and short as Jayne brushing her hair. I love how you noticed and called it out, I love how I felt the first time I saw this thinking "Well, Jayne's not getting anything from this interaction, but he's willing to give without expecting a reward... k... okay... wow, he has dimensions". Episode 8 is still my fave, but this is a hard tie with like 3 other eps for #2.
Also, Rance Burgess, ever see Supernatural?

The singer singing "Amazing Grace" was the lead singer of the group Splendid, who made, at least, a couple of appearances on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I had at least one album by them in the 90s.

Great reaction. I could see it in your eyes where you thought Inara was going to take that conversation and I knew she was just going to crush you with the twist. The writing on this show was always top notch.

Melinda Clarke who played Nandi was Julie in the OC and also had several appearances in CSI as Lady Heather. Kimberly McCullough who played Chari, the double-crosser, was Robin on General Hospital in the 90s and early 2000s.
