Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Lockup [4x05] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Hi everyone! I was shocked to hear the voice of one of my favourite fictional characters of all-time in this episode. 😅 Brandon Keener appears briefly in this episode and I was like 🤯 when I realized! He voices Garrus Vakarian in the Mass Effect video game trilogy. 🥰

Thanks so much for watching, as always! [Direct link here.]

I think of the Darkhold as being kinda like the Monkey's Paw in that it shows you something that you think you want and shows you how to do it, no matter how crazy or impossible it might be, but if you use the knowledge, it will turn sour and always end badly. It doesn't matter your original good intentions, because it was made by a chaos demon. THE chaos demon, really, and he ain't big on HELPING people. It's not said in the show which is why I feel OK telling you. The Darkhold, I guess, was featured in Doctor Strange comics and probably others. I didn't read a lot of Doctor Strange comics, even though I thought he was really interesting. THE chaos demon is the one who "created" The Scarlet Witch which is why the original Darkhold was on the walls of Mount Wundergore (sp?) where there seemed to be that shrine to her in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Pretty sure the demon's name is Cthon. Also, I'm sure you noticed it by now, but when they first went into the prison and Lucy let those Watchdogs out, they just shot them with icers. Mac said, before they went in, that it was an icer only mission. Also, you can tell the icers from regular guns by the way they look (they have a silver muzzle tip) and they sound different. Kinda have a "pew pew" sound. Listen for it and you'll never be confused. Also, them being Watchdogs is why Daisy whistled and said, "Here, boy."

Knowing how much you love ME going into this season, I was wondering if you were gonna catch "Garrus." 😁

I've played the games so much, I immediately recognized him and said, HEY! NICE!"

The Easter eggs in the basement are ghost rider Eastereggs from the comics. Won't say more until next episode.

We have Eastereggs from Doctor Strange and Civil war this episode. Senator Nadeer mentions the kree attack in 3x19 and doctor strange movie event when he stopped the sorcerers in Hong Kong. People must have talked about seeing the sorcerers being there even though he reversed the main damage caused by dormumu and his followers. Enough for it to be a weird news story. The civil war Easteregg is the UN bombing in Vienna that Mace was praised for being a hero. It is the attack that killed tchalla father. Simmons picked up on him lying about it and used that to get out of the lie detector test. She has come so far since season 1 and shooting agent sitwell to get out of a situation.

Oh my God I watched this show like 5 times and I never realized that was the voice actor for Garrus. You definitely have better hearing than me hahaha

Our first look at the Darkhold! I really like the ambigram design of the cover as well, though I must admit I didn't know there was a term for it! One of the Darkhold props was in the end-of-series prop auction - one of the guys on Discord owns it. The Darkhold 'reading' the viewer is also quite creepy, especially given that it recognises your native language and shows different things to each person viewing it - though it's not clear if it simply translates or is showing completely different information. Lucy and Joseph slowing letting go of each other's hand is a nice subtle way of showing the influence the Darkhold so quickly has over them. I know there's a bunch of comic hints in the basement they find the Darkhold in, but as I don't know the comics, I don't really know what they are referencing. I've always thought the question that trips Jemma up is a bit stupid: "Have you ever received information you were obligated to report [...] to the director?" - surely you can just answer "yes" to that? With the way it's phrased, there's nothing in the question about withholding information, and it's broad enough that as long as you have reported information once (which we know Jemma has done, re Coulson's side trip in 4x01), then a simple "yes" is the truth. Incidentally, the lie-detector chair is the one that Fury designed to defeat Natasha, that we originally saw back in 1x19. Daisy really is punishing herself - not only does she isolate herself whilst on the Zephyr, but she chooses to do so by sitting in the quinjet where she'll be reminded of Lincoln. Then in the prison, she continues with her self-destructive streak by attempting to sacrifice herself to save May and Coulson, not caring that there's no way she can win against the shear number of people she's up against (TBF, she does do very well, but it's obvious that it's a losing battle). That final conversation with May does give a hint that it's finally getting to her - that small breakdown after May leaves feels like the first time she lets herself feel some grief for Lincoln.
