I really liked this reveal when this first came out! Up to this point I liked Mace well enough, but he seemed a bit "boring" or one-dimensional. This really added an interesting layer to his character, and made him more likeable imho.

Mace probably assumed she knew the whole truth especially with her higher clearance and that everything he said in that speech was a lie not just Vienna.

Mace is a comic character. He does at one point take the position of Captain America tho he is mostly known as the patriot.

So, this episode gives us a backstory to humanise Director Mace, and as a result we find out the truth about Vienna - which also confirms that the lie Jemma detected earlier in the season was about that incident, not that Mace wasn't an Inhuman. It also confirms that Mace's heart is in the right place - he just wants to help, and when offered a chance to do so took it without questioning what was involved. The Patriot is a comic book character - I don't know the details, but I believe he's kind of a 'lite' version of Captain America. Bringing back Cal's formula is a nice little callback - makes sense that the US military would see that and think that it was something it could use, not having SHIELDs hands-on experience. Things really have changed for Daisy - back in the pilot she was described a superhero 'groupie' (even admitting she'd cosplayed around Stark Tower), and now she has 'groupies' of her own. It's very clear she's not comfortable in the public eye though. The differing reactions of Fitz & Jemma to AIDA are interesting - Fitz, having worked on/with AIDA for some time, wants to try and determine exactly what happened with her, but Jemma just wants to get rid of her. It rather gives the impression that Jemma might have been a bit jealous of AIDA, and she's using those feelings to shut down any attempt at an investigation. Radcliffe confirms that LMD May didn't know she was an LMD - although with that injury, it looks like that won't be the case for much longer. How she will handle that discovery is going to be interesting. Whilst not named in the episode, the bullets used to attack the event are Judas bullets (from Luke Cage).
