Better Man (2024) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Happy weekend everyone! Thank you so much to Tyler Foster for submitting a Reactr request for this movie. In a surprising twist... not only had I known of this movie, but I also know of Robbie Williams and even know a song of his! 🫨 I'm very glad to have watched this movie. I don't have a ton of biopics in my "seen" list, but this one is now there and with a high rating from me! If you're also watching for the first time, let me know! 😊 [Direct link here.]

Please enjoy the reaction and have a great weekend! Thank you for being here. 🥰

I started my day by powerwashing the patio. Blasting it clean from thirty plus years of built up grime. There's a clumsily half baked metaphor in there somewhere. This film was magnificent. My first time watch. I had been meaning to get to it eventually. So it was nice to share it with you. Particularly with a much welcomed adjacent perspective, too. As a Brit who grew up in the 90s, I have a palpable relationship with the landscape and the music. It's funny that Gary Barlow was framed as the song writer. But I think, until he went through his own realative rock bottom, after his solo career lived it's short life. Imo that added life experience perhaps helped to make the music of a reformed Take That, comparatively better. But as grown men, the material called for a different approach as well. Back to Robbie. I watched this fella, strut and self-deprecate his way through the best part of two decades. It seemed pretty evident, even to this young man. That it was an obvious cover for some crushing self-esteem problems. The cocky charm and the ever wanting approval in his eyes and body language. Made him a loveable entertainer, rather than an arrogant 'see you next Tuesday'. It's perhaps easy to make that claim after watching this movie. All I can say is, I knew sort of what to expect going in. But the artistic and psychological approach they took, in delivering this story, of the man and not his success. I couldn't have predicted how much that would was going to entertain me. I also never anticipated, how much I was going to cry during this film. Twelve minutes in, and I'm in bits, listening to the words of a young boy, through the lyrics of his older self, aching to matter. Robert's songs, that have in some small part, contributed to the soundtrack of the middle section of my life, so far. You find yourself singing along, but truly hearing the resonance and intent of the writer, for the very first time. That blew me away. That they were able to take these songs and redefine some of their emotional meaning for me.

Thanks Hugo! I'm glad you enjoyed the movie and reaction. Rocketman is definitely one that I would like to watch. I have wanted to *anyway* but now seeing it is the same style as this one has intrigued me even more.

First time watch for me. I love music biography films but honestly had no interest when this came out because as you said — most Americans don’t know or care for Robbie. Would’ve never seen it if not for the reaction. Movie was solid, had more heart than expected. Stylistically it is EXACTLY just like Rocketman. Definitely inspired by it. Highly recommend you see that one as it has better music and acting/actors.
