The New Mutants (2020) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Happy Sunday everyone! While this is not technically the last of the X-Men movies, this is the one that makes me feel like I'm officially "caught up"! This journey has been a really fun one and I'm so appreciative of everyone who joined me for it. 😊 For any of you that do end up watching this with me, I hope you enjoy the reaction to this movie and thanks for taking the time to watch! [Direct link here.]

I've received a lot of questions and suggestions to watch and react to X-Men '97. I do want to, but I also know that I need to pull back a bit more on comic stories, especially since I'm still making my way through the MCU movies and shows, as well as the all of the non-Phase shows here on Patreon. I'm still enjoying both of those journeys, so going to stick with those. If I feel an itch to get into X-Men '97, then I will.

Looking forward to your comments!

It is a shame indeed. It would be fun to see Anya again!

So much went wrong with the production of this movie. It was due to come out in April 2018 some 7 months after filming finished, but Fox wasn't happy with it and wanted reshoots. That all got delayed by the Disney acquisition. By the time it was finally being finished, reshoots for what they wanted to do (to fully embrace the horror theme) couldn't be done due to the cast ageing too much. I also suspect that Disney probably decided it wasn't worth spending much more money on at that point. It's a shame in so many ways as I feel there's a good film struggling to get out and the tie-in to the "current" world of Logan (with all the Essex Corp references) had potential. Saying all that, part of me still hopes that Disney consider bringing some of the characters into the MCU as I'd love to see Anya portraying Magik again as that was inspired casting in my mind.

Well. That was a reaction. To a movie. I saw this in theaters in August 2020. The height of COVID with social distancing and masks and people were seated with empty seats between parties. Seeing a new movie in theaters was exciting enough that I probably gave this more credit than I should have. Plus I was well aware of the behind the scenes shenanigans. This movie wrapped filming in 2017 and didn’t release for 3 years. It had so many scrip rewrites. Plus I know the characters from the comics so I had things to look forward to. Like Lockheed. I knew this was intended to be a small haunted house style movie before going in. But in the end it’s like a made for tv movie from the ‘90s. They had a great cast they didn’t let shine. And quite frankly it’s very forgettable and I don’t know that I will ever watch it again. But the tea was fun because you didn’t know the horror elements were coming and I got a good chuckle out of several of your “What the Hell?” moments.
