The Thing (1982) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Hello everyone! Dang, this was a wild experience. IDK that I've ever CRIED during a horror movie because I was genuinely sad, but also scared and intrigued. 😂 What a ride. Please enjoy this reaction and I look forward to your comments! [Direct link here.]

I'm really glad you enjoyed this because when it came up on the poll it was my favourite of the choices, but I just wasn't sure I could - in good conscience - vote for you to watch this. I really enjoyed you digging into Jed's filmography! I haven't seen Natty Gann since I saw it in theatres as a boy, but I still remember how charming he was in that movie and had no idea it was the same dog.

I won't explain why, because I don't want to set expectations, but let's just say that The Thing (2011) has got to be a really key exhibit in the discussion of CGI vs. practical, and for more than one reason than you might immediately think. Also, while they are *very* different, the same short story was adapted into a previous movie, The Thing From Another World (1951). It would probably be better to wait awhile, so that you can get some distance from this and not compare, because their entire approach is unrelated to one another, but that is a very fun classic sci-fi movie. When the kid Laurie is babysitting is watching TV in Halloween, you can see The Thing From Another World playing on screen. Carpenter grew up loving the movie and short story, and that led to him not only making this but paying tribute to those specific parts through visual homage.
