Sinners (2025) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Hey all! I'm sorry this one is being shared so late. I had a bit of a messy week last week, but back on track now! This movie was quite hyped up, and for me I get it, I understand it, it worked. I enjoyed so much about this and very glad that I chose to give it a watch. [Direct link here.]

Enjoy!

Comments

Although I don't think people will be reading these comments if they haven't seen the movie, since this is a brand new movie, I will say that there are spoilers below. The story about Mary's heritage is basically borrowed from Hailee Steinfeld herself: her grandfather was half African-American. I couldn't 100% tell if you knew the piece of vampire lore or not that says a vampire cannot enter a place without being invited in. This is referenced in the title of the great contemporary Swedish vampire classic Let the Right One In (2008). There's a great visual homage to The Shining in the movie when Stack is stuck in the room after having turned. I posted a photo of it in the Discord. The whole town doesn't die. When Grace Chow walks from one grocery store to the other, it's not just that the family owns two stores, it's recognizing the way Asian people are often able to "bridge the gap" between Black and white cultures. Since things are still segregated, one store is on the Black side of the street and the other is on the white side; the Chows look "white enough" for the white people, and the Black people have a more accurate understanding of them. There was a whole musical number with Delroy Lindo's Delta Slim that was cut out but it is included as a deleted scene in the upcoming physical and digital copies. When we return to Sammie at the end of the movie, he is played by the hugely influential real Blues musician Buddy Guy, who has eight Grammys. Before Ryan Coogler got the call from Marvel to direct Black Panther, he directed two movies: the true-story drama Fruitvale Station (2013), and then the movie that I still think is his masterpiece, Creed (2015). (I would put Sinners in second.) Creed is the seventh film in the Rocky franchise, so you have quite a ways to go to get to it, but man, what a movie. I'm sure it will be quite awhile, maybe 2026 before we get to Creed, but I can't wait. And while I wouldn't reveal any of the cast in that movie, I will say that Coogler has been working with Ludwig Goransson for many years.

First time watch for me, enjoyed it a lot. It's everything I wish certain other horror films had been. This was interesting from the start, had me falling in love with these characters, with the music, with the unique style, and it was a horror that utilized its strengths instead of relying on jumpscares. It was more concerned with story than it was being unsettling or trying to gross out the audience. Everyone was top-notch. Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan is a duo that needs to stick together!
