*Gale not Gabe. In a previous episode, Walt asked Gale how he got into cooking meth and Gale said he is a Libertarian and believes all drugs should be legal. He said "consenting adults want what they want, and at least with me they know they're getting what they paid for," as in, a pure meth that's not cut with anything. When we see inside Gale's home, we also see that he has Ron Paul campaign stickers, which aligns with him being a Libertarian. He also recited to Walt the Walt Whitman poem "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer" which is about someone getting bored in an astronomy lecture and going outside to marvel at the stars. Gale said he loves chemistry "because it's all still magic." He said he felt stifled in academia and didn't want to "kiss ass" and conform in order to advance his career. Gus probably recruited him from a university lab by offering him more money and freedom than he could find in academic chemistry.
