S K Y D C 0.4preview - A taste of things to come

The future is here!... or is it? DC "0.4preview" is a taste of things to come.
*Please note that 0.4preview is not 0.4. The full 0.4 experience will come once a new pure update comes out.

We took a gamble. Currently, 0.4preview is very experimental. A lot of visual aspects will suffer due to those experimentations, but we can safely say it looks MUCH better than 0.3. 

There's A LOT to cover:

It's the update that fixes key major sore issues such as bloom & glare, exposure technics and most importantly, colors.

First things first, the most exciting part about 0.4 are the reflections improvement. We literally fixed AC's reflection. This is the main reason of the substantial visual changes from 0.3, bringing us closer to the DC vibe.

In the past, with 0.2, we have improved car shading, by improving light bounces shading on car reflections, thus making them more fitting to the environment.

For 0.4, we did another experimentation but this time we affect Fresnel reflection. To give you a simple idea of how "Fresnel" works, look at the windshield of the GT3 RS: there's a more pronounced gradience. It is lacking in 0.4preview. It's one of those small details that actually makes a huge difference, really affecting the emotion that the game looks and feel real.

Fresnel impacts all reflective materials, achieving much more realistic results, thus making reflections a LOT less overblown.

Colors & bloom

Wow. Massively improved, and much more accurate than ever. 0.3 looked way too yellow and dull. Sepia has been toned down massively - and is now controllable for users.

0.4preview is much more vivid. The new bloom, glare and colors adjustment is a massive step up to  achieve a more natural look than before. Bloom is toned down massively. I've come to realization that bloom was way too strong after seeing the game on another monitor! It was simply too bloomy for no reasons in places where there shouldn't be any bloom, so this has been fixed.

Exposure Handling & S K Y's Exposure Blinding

Exposure has been optimized and re-built fRoM tHe GrOuNd Up to better reflect how actual exposure handling works.

S K Y D C 0.4preview:

The exposure blindness that was written for 0.3 was like an added layer to the exposure, so whenever the exposure adjusts, some sort of second "pass" got on/off, executing blindness. You can see it whenever you look at very bright spots and then quickly look away to a dark spot. 

Looking from my monitor, the exposure adjustments looked great without caveats, but on another monitor, you can see brightness and contrast gets broken. So this needed to be changed big time.

In 0.4, blindness works seamlessly. The sun now does its job of blinding your vision properly without the use of sunblinding shaders from the upcoming pure version!

The new glare adjustments is helping a lot to provide a much more convincing sun blinding effect and dare I say, I believe DC 0.4 is the only ppfilter that has a proper sun glare that actually affects your visuals, without the need of the upcoming pure shaders. It's no longer a sunlight on your screen to simply look beautiful but a sunlight that serves a purpose as well, which is to make the overall ppfilter feel more natural.

HDR

Moving forward all S K Y ppfilter's will support HDR. For SDR users, In Pure Config > "pp" section, I highly recommend adjusting the "paperwhite" slider, otherwise your game may look blown up!


Reaching the peak

Right now, I believe we've now reach a limit to the point there's very little room for improvement, it's all about the small details now. Only upcoming Pure updates can give us ppfilter creators more room for massive improvements! The main reason why S K Y D C won't be released soon is because Pure currently lacks a lot of features! Like fog, which is something I am impatiently waiting for. But Pure updates always bring a lot of amazing surprises like landscapes, and sunblinding shaders that will be very useful for S K Y D C and any other ppfilters. This is very exciting and I am eager to see what the future of Pure holds!

I think that's enough for now, there will another post within a week or 2 explaining more in details about reflections improvements that will come for the full 0.4 release.

Known issues:
Taillights at high exposure during daylight will appear gloomy. This will be fixed on full release of 0.4.

Oh really? I didn't know about that since I don't use VR. Did you discuss about it on the PURE/AC shaders Discord server? It's probably a limitation. I imagine Peter or Ilja are working on a fix.

No no, it's not an issue, it's already known that there is no reflections of cars on the road in rain or wet surfaces in VR (since ever). my question was just wondering (if you know about that) about why and if it could be possible to enable that feature in the future, or it's just an untweakable limitation.

Hi, just amazing work, now AC looks better than ACC, DC, IR, etc. haha a lot better. Just a question out of the context, just wondering ... it's impossible to get cars reflection over the wet road in VR? just like we have it in Single Screen?. Thanks again for your amazing work.

Installed it manualy, still no paperwhite. Should Script loaded (in Pure config) be different from defaul_script.lua? And I cant find a way to search to load yours? Now I saw with regular sky 1.5 it is loading it. But for 1.6 and 0.4p it does not. Files are in the pure_scripts folder.

You definitely changed the ppfilters for some reasons. Did you install it manually? Reinstall it. Always install all ppfilters manually.

when I start AC it shows everything black or white. I have to change the filter and then put SKY 04 back on and it works. but in pure config I have errors: YEBIS Vignette strength must not be 0! YEBIS Godrays/DIFFRACTION_RING must not be 0!

i find this very cool but when i put skydc 0.4 on my game, it appear very light and like i find the reflections of the 0.3 more beautiful, i think the prob comes from my pure settings but i have no clues how to fix this and to make it more beautiful :/

Hi, could you help please? When i use SKY filter the game works, when i select SKYDC04 Preview the game launches well, i have the left bar of the race menu (AC origin) but the rest of the screen is in dark grey, i hear sounds, i see proximity icons but that's all. Any idea?

Is there any way to get Pure to use the settings I set as default? It reverts back to the original settings every game. I'm on SDR so I have to change that every time.

Looks great, but having to go through every CSP setting (even things like the VR tweaks) to change them back is frustrating. Even some FFB settings were affected.

Did you install through Content Manager or manually? You must always install post-processing manually. It will always miss files when drag-and-dropped.

There's no "paperwhite" scale. Just hue, saturation, brightness, contrast, color_temperature, gamma, godrays

Hey, when i use SKYDC 0.3 everything's great, but with the 0.4 it's waaaaaaaaay too bright, unplayable by day and it looks like it's 14:00h at night... what am I doing wrong?

i am using a triple monitor setup and when i load this, half of my right and left screen are dark. The right screen is so dark i cannot see out of my mirror in the middle of a sunny day. Any suggestions?

Dude best most realistic PPfilter I have used so far in daylight. I have not tried it at night but first impression is amazing.

Oh that definitely fixed it! Now I can see at night haha. The only thing I notice is when that's turned up. I have it set to about 3.9 which makes the busses and trucks not so blinding is that the bloom around the streetlights along the highway kind of pop in as I get close to them kind of like a bad lod distance in other games or something. Totally minor compared to blinding trucks and busses though. Thanks so much for the super quick response and help!

I didn't mention some of the new sliders for the ppfilter! The issue is due to bloom at night. On the pp tab, there's now a "night bloom threshold" slider for night settings to alleviate the issue. Try it and let me know if that fixes everything!

just had a quick question regarding headlights at night. had this same issue with 0.3 and same with 0.4 as i just tested. my headlights reflecting off the back of a large white truck or bus ai traffic car on any track but mostly noticed on shutoko are blinding and the back of the large vehicle becomes just a huge white light spot on the screen. is there a setting or something ive missed that would fix that issue? otherwise loving 0.4 so far, the lighting and sun reflections through glass are a huge improvement in terms of quality and realism.
