Band Of Brothers Full Reaction | Part Two: Day Of Days

I was very hesitant to start Part Two after where the story ended during Part One. I knew what Easy Company and the rest of the planes were heading into and visions of Saving Private Ryan kept running through my mind. But wow, once again I loved what I got out of this series and what it opened my eyes to.

Band Of Brothers Full Reaction | Part Two: Day Of Days

Comments

Grenades explode up and out. They also aren't very effective, at least not the way they're often portrayed on television. They're better for getting enemies out of cover than they are for actually killing or wounding them. That said, Toye was still incredibly lucky.

There actually is. Google Chrome Extensions like Youtube Custom Speed where you can create your own speed and make your reaction at like 1,065 speed to match up with the europe one. Some creators just dont use YT to upload the reactions, so that option is not on the table if iits uploaded directly to pateron or google drive.

I love how in "Carentan" we get this setup of Spiers' character as if during the main story we got this side story wondering if the man is some psychotic soldier that everyone will have to worry about. He's probably my favorite character next to Winters.

Robert Durant

Just to add to the story about Spiers and the POWs, when Winters first told the story to Stephen Ambrose for the book, he said afterwards he felt back that he told it and asked that it not be included in the book until he could get permission from Spiers. When Winters asked Spiers about it he happily confirmed to him that the story was true and that he was under orders to do it.

Lt Speirs (the loose cannon) is a tough guy. this isn't the last time we'll be interacting with him. i really wanna speed run this show now lol. it's so good.

Nothing you can do on YOUR end, since it would then mess it up for the other people instead. The viewer either have to slow down their own copy to 96% or speed up you video to ~104%. Youtube lets you change playback speeds in 5% increments, so it's close, but requires some re-syncing from time to time.

Oh wow. They must really believe Americans have a shorter attention span LOL that really stinks for people in Europe trying to enjoy this though.. I guess there isn't any real workaround this.

I'm absolutely loving these facts! Thank you so much for taking the time to share them, answer my questions and explain some of the more important points in each episode. I'm learning a lot through these comments!

Amazing fact that veterans of Easy Company were on set during this to make sure everything was relayed accurately! I also can't believe this show is going on 20+ years since its release. Shows you how classic it is that so many people love it still today. I've seen a few comments about the 11th episode and would love to include it in this series! I've been loving this series a lot so far and I know it'll only get better from here.

I wish I had more Winters type managers in my life. I might have stayed at my part time jobs more consistently throughout high school/college if I did and not had to job hunt as much lol. I had a lot of Sobels instead. But I wasn't in my full-time career at the time and only trying to make extra money so I never respected them enough to stay. They were hard on me for the smallest things and I had enough stress in my life that I just threw up my hands and quit instead of dealing with it lol. Watching Winters direct his men calm and collectively throughout this mission was AMAZING. I hope nothing happens to him in this show because my heart will not handle it lol...

Through the years in my working career, I've had a lot of managers, and people like Winters are the ones I've always looked up to the most. Calm, collected, smart, caring... leading by example and through trust and respect. Really love his character. Very inspiring As always, love all these deep dives you've been doing into the individual characters! Opens up my eyes to see things in ways that I maybe didn't originally. And really enriches the experience of watching this amazing series

Thanks Pascal, I appreciate you filling in which units had which suites on them.

You did see Meehan in episode 1 after he takes command. Winters goes to him in Upottery and relays info from a training jump and they work out that the jump on D-Day would be in Normandy. Meehan was in a plane with others from Easy company. And yes, the show does as much as possible to stay true to actual events. For the sake of coherent and efficient storytelling, some things are compressed for time, others ascribe events that different soldiers did to/within Easy, and in the case of the very few elements which were not correct, it was not due to a lack of effort but more to the fact that the book and show are built upon what info was available at the time (pre-internet) and the recollection of veterans to the best of their abilities and some things were not known to them. Some of Easy company was even there during production to help ensure accuracy as best as possible. The show is truly an amazing accomplishment and pays such respect to the soldiers … which has kept it so well-regarded even 20+ years later and people like me rewatching it at least once a year and enjoy seeing new people discover it. 🙂 And I can’t remember if you said you were planning to but there is an “11th episode”, the documentary “We Stand Alone Together “ which features more of Easy’s soldiers talking about the war and real historical footage. It’s the perfect way to top off the series.

Once again, here are a few notes regarding the reaction: - Round parachutes, like the ones usually used for static line jumps to this day, are not steerable, so you will indeed land wherever the wind takes you. - While in reality, the first grenade that landed next to Joe Toye, did not actually explode, it is noteworthy that German stick grenades like the ones shown repeatedly in the episode were not fragmentation grenades, so while they could still cause injury or death, laying flat on the ground did offer some protection. - The compass Winters had in his fly was actually somewhat common among officers, both since it offered quick access and because it was less likely to be found and confiscated in case they were captured. - The term Volksdeutsche was used extensively by the Nazi regime to describe people of German descent that did not live in Germany (those that did where called Reichsdeutsche). It was part of the idea of uniting the "Aryan race". Most of them lived in Eastern Europe and stayed there until they fled from advancing Russian forces at the end of the war, but some from other parts of the world, including the US did return to Germany. - Executions of PoWs did occur on both sides, partially since no real structures for handling them existed in the first days of the invasion. While it was never conclusively confirmed whether Lt. Speirs did execute PoWs on D-Day, it is very likely that such an event occurred, though the details are much less clear. - This could be considered a spoiler for the episode: Lt. Meehans plane is seen crashing at the beginning of the episode. He and everyone aboard the plane was killed, but Easy Company did not know for a couple of days as everyone got reorganized whether he just missed his dropzone or had died.

Nice summary of the episode. To go into a little more detail regarding the emblems on the helmets, they were used to identify the regiments in the 101st Airborne Division. Since regiments (like the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) of which Easy Company was a part) had about 3000 men and the series is mostly focusing on Easy and, to a lesser degree, it's sister companies in 2nd battalion (like Dog Company which Lt. Speirs commanded in the assault on the last gun), it is rare to see other emblems. Still, here is a list of the regiments and their emblems: Spades: 506th PIR Hearts: 502nd PIR Diamonds: 501st PIR Clubs: 327th Glider Infantry Regiment (GIR)

The casualties at Utah Beach were significantly lower than at Omaha Beach, as depicted in Saving Private Ryan. I'd like to think that taking out the guns firing on Utah contributed to that. They have since put up a memorial at Brecourt Manor for what Easy Co. did there.

So a few things....first of all great reaction to this episode. As far as the mission itself the airborne divisions were to go in during the early morning hours prior to the beach landings. In the end of Episode 1 they left their airbase during the evening for the flight to Normandy. To be honest, I'm not sure how long the flight was. The Normandy coastline was not where the Germans expected the Allies to land as it was the farthest point between England and the French mainland. The Germans had thought the Allies would land at Pas De Calais. The Germans had flooded much of the French countryside making the parachute drops that much more difficult. During the drop the airborne units were spread all over the place and members of the 101st fought with members of the 82nd and vice versa. Different units of the 101st had different card emblems stenciled on the side of their helmets. I can't remember which was for which though. The sound makers they were carrying were called "crickets" one click was supposed to be answered by two clicks. Glad you are continuing your journey with Easy Company.

The sync problem is a US vs Europe thing. I have the same thing. It has been converted to 24 fps for US TV, while it plays at the original 25 fps in Europe.

Stefan Overgaard

Awesome. Thats my evening sorted.

Got my afternoon plans now!
