Captain America: The Winter Soldier | Full Reaction

Well, this Captain America hit me in a way I didn’t expect. The action was incredible, sure, but it was the emotional punches that really got me. Seeing Steve struggle to figure out who he can trust and what his place in this new world is... felt surprisingly relatable? Also, Peggy is still alive??? And Bucky... Wow. The mix and sadness and hope had me leaving this one feeling a little raw, but in the best way. I get it now... Compared to this one, the last two have nothing on it lol. How do these movies just keep getting better and better??

Captain America: The Winter Soldier | Full Reaction

Comments

For a long time this was my fave MCU movie. It works not because it is a great superhero movie (it is !) But it works because it is a well crafted 70s style spy thriller (Robert Redford is in an awesome spy movie from Tony Scott with Brad Pitt called Spy Game which deserves more love). This is the Russo brothers. They really know how to shoot action sequences (some camera angles and fight moves are straight out of a Gareth Evans movie (The Raid)). Its going to sound weird... but THIS is how I imagine Cap moving from the panels on comic books. I mean... comics are static 2D images, but there is a fluidity and strength from Cap's portrayed movements which was largely absent in the two previous films. That ship infiltration NAILED how we imagine Cap should move. Evans was a perfect cast (again shout out to Sarah Finn in casting). Evans refused the role, as humble as he is and said he could never play Captain America. And that humbleness, and the fact that Chris is a great guy IRL makes him so right for the role. He and Johannson are besties as well, and have such great chemistry together. Some interesting asides from the comics. Falcon is not Cap's sidekick. Back in February 1971 Sam was introduced as Cap's PARTNER. This is a black superhero in a comic book (not the first... we already had Black Panther). You can't imagine how important this was and should be reinforced to anyone complaining about how "woke" Marvel is these days. Marvel was always woke ! Also in the comics was a long term romance between Sharon Carter and Steve Rogers. Another was between Bucky and Romanov ! Notice what was on Fury's tombstone ? "The path of the righteous man" which was of course the line Jules used in Pulp Fiction. Another thing that always makes me laugh is that Nat's hair goes curly after a shower, yet at breakfast her hair is straight. So this means a) Falcon has straightners or b) Nat has a set on her utility belt. Finally... I need to nag about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. again. Its really really good and you'd love the characters set in this backdrop to the MCU. Even more incredible was after ten short episodes, just as the team was getting some momentum behind them, they were informed about the events in Winter Soldier. So how the heck do you write a story about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. when there was no more S.H.I.E.L.D ? The way they did it was absolutely stunning. You should give it a go (what do you say Patreons ?)

Also, I gotta say this will probably end up being a favorite of mine as well. It was AMAZING.. I get why everyone hated on the previous two before this one now lol

Kali Wali

Ooo I've been recommended both of those at some point in the past bc they are on my whiteboard! Thanks for shouting them out again :)

Kali Wali

This is in my top 3 with some others I won't name right now but a later date. I have a few non marvel films u can check out. Crimson tide and enemy of the state. Two great films

Rashad Walker

Omg I tooootally get it now! This one was EPIC 🥹✨

Kali Wali

Wow, she lived such a full life though! I'm glad Steve got to see her before she died.. But Alzheimer's is so difficult. You could see in Steve's eyes how taken back he was when she realized who she was talking to.. 😓 my heart

Kali Wali

Glad you love it! I thought it'd be a fun thing to do as we meet more Avengers and favorites change ✨

Kali Wali

I'm starting to see that the MCU likes to put themes in their Phases lol. It's pretty awesome. Phase 1 was all about how cocky people can change and even though we are all a little selfish inside, the Avengers don't let their own ego get in their way and that's what makes them the most heroic and trustworthy people to protect the planet. Phase 2 is all about diving deeper into that message and soul searching in order to become the best that they can be. So with that said, WOW I can't wait to see where the next Avengers film in this Phase is going to take us and what Phase 3 is going to be all about! I loooove the amount of lore and depth the brought out in this film to the viewer. Phase 1 had me wondering how the Avengers were so epic and heroic, but Phase 2 showed me why they are the ones we can trust in a world so untrustworthy. And yesss, the music in this one was great!

Kali Wali

Yesss, I get now why Captain America is a favorite for so many! This movie was incredible and the further lore they pulled into SHIELD, the characters and the overall state of the world was so awesome to take in!

Kali Wali

Ahhhh. That's insane to think about!

Kali Wali

ABSOLUTLEY LOVED your reaction!!!!!!! Now you know why and understand all the hype for this one. There are others that when you experience them, you'll know it. Marvel just doesn't miss in the Infinity Saga.

P T

Oh, to answer your question RE: timeline; Steve Rogers was in the ice for 70 years. Peggy Carter is probably around ~95 years old in this movie, and yeah, sadly suffering from Alzheimer's.

Onno Smits

I _love_ this tier-list idea, please keep doing that as you go through the MCU journey. 🤩👍

Onno Smits

Speaking of the vulnerabilities, I loved that they showed Steve retrieving his old World War II uniform and setting up that he wouldn't necessarily be bulletproof for the final battle

The MCU movies at a baseline are so good in general, and then they go every once in a while and drop an absolute masterpiece like this one! Everything about this is just soooo good. Story, plot twists, emotions, even the action with Fury's car escape sequence and all of the choreography in Steve's hand-to-hand combat scenes is phenomenal Much like Iron Man 3, I love these types of films where our superheroes aren't always so.... super. Getting to see their struggles, their vulnerabilities, and their resilience is so cool, and honestly even relatable. Even seeing a little of Black Widow's vulnerabilities was very interesting Also, the music in this one is so good! A lot of it reminds me of Connor's theme from Detroit

Now you have an idea of why this is my all time favorite movie in the MCU. I looked forward to coming home from work and watching this with you. (figuratively speaking of course) This movie solidified my favorite of being Cap and I was glad you liked it. I look forward to you continuing your journey through the MCU. My second favorite will be coming soonish. I'm sure I will let you know what it is when it comes lol. I don't why it's so enjoyable to watch someone watch these movies with fresh eyes, but it is.

The "Shall we play a game?" movie you were wondering about is WarGames from the early 80s, it's a great thriller about hacking from when people didn't really know what hacking was. The "recording devices" in the SHIELD base were actually very primitive hard drives that ran on tape spools. A room sized one like that could maybe hold a few hundred megabytes at most.

👀😱

Kali Wali

I feel like I probably wouldn't have liked it in 2014 either, honestly. I was too young and stressed (lol) and wouldn't have understood the depth of it all like I do now!

Kali Wali

I forgot about the game awards!!! thank you for the reminder lol I hope you enjoy this one! 🔥

Kali Wali

That line hurt me so much.. And Steve's fading eyes just letting whatever happens, happen 😞💔

Kali Wali

Get used to that feeling!

The Dingo

I totally get it.. This one was so wild!

Kali Wali

This film was sooooo good! I filmed it this morning but this is worth a rewatch tonight lol

Kali Wali

It's so funny you mention the Mass Effect vibes, not to spoil anything, but Avengers III and IV always seemed to have the exact same feel as ME3.

JD Nevesytrof

It's funny - I didn't like this when I saw it in theaters, yet it grew on me with repeat viewings to becoming a favourite.

KJ Gould

Oh no!!!! One of my favorite films! I forgot this is happening tonight! I am waiting on the bus to get home, but I have to watch the game awards! It's going to be a long and good night for me. I'm glad you enjoyed this one! Can't wait to watch the reaction.

iameNeRG (Rodney Gant)

Bucky being brainwashed and tortured for years is so tragic! 😢 Caps line always hits me “Cause I’m with to the end of the line.”

Chase

Definitely up there as one of the best MCU installments. Knew you'd enjoy it.

Simon Haynes

Welcome to the first of what will be a long string of amazing Marvel films!
