Firefly | Episode 1: Serenity
Added 2024-12-26 22:54:51 +0000 UTCI'm finally starting Firefly! It was so good I had to watch 2 episodes back-to-back (you'll get episode two tomorrow!). It's safe to say, I'm completely hooked already. From the gritty world-building to the quirky crew of Serenity, it was everything I was hoping for and more. This first episode was jam-packed full of character building and I'm getting a very 'found family' vibe from it already which I'm loving. I can't wait to share this journey with all of you!

As you stated, the war opening was critical to understanding Mal, who does not act like a classic hero-type character. This (among other reasons) is why the Fox executives did not like the show and opened the series with "War Stories" and not this actual pilot episode. As for the use of the word "gorram", this is one of the methods used to convey the intensity of the situation without running afoul of the censors. Similarly, this is why they swear in Mandarin/Chinese. When the crew first came up on the reaver ship, you asked about Inara and the syringe. You were understandably wondering if it contained "poison for her". It did not. It contained something darker. That is as far as it is appropriate to say for now. On a lighter note, you have incredibly beautiful and expressive eyes. It is one of your many strengths as a reactor.

Pretty awesome how they decided to do this! As someone that constantly filters out bad language in games I'm reading from, I appreciate their own way of cursing to not be considered a bad rating on TV. It's kind of crazy seeing where we are in 2024 now with TV though. I never watch the news, but my father-in-law does, and I was so shocked to hear them dropping the S word on live television by actual anchors on the news... I had to kindly ask him to turn it off because of the kids around.

2024-12-27 01:40:36 +0000 UTCLooks like it falls to me to explain the Chinese. In this future, China and the USA were the only remaining, dominant cultures. So when we settled new worlds the cultures began to mix, including language. This allowed for the showrunners to use Chinese to get around network censors. The hope is that you'll figure it out through context and line delivery. But, if you're ever unsure, it's safe to assume it was a curse word. Also, yes, gorram was just a way to say GD as the word was considered a no-no on network television at the time. God is still God in this universe.
