Firefly | Episode 2: The Train Job

Once I started this series, I couldn't put it down! I went right into this second episode, and it was really hard not to keep going lol. I'm loving the space western vibes and how everyone is so morally gray. And somehow, I'm still rooting for the thieves! Who knew smuggling stolen goods could be so charmingly chaotic lol

Sorry, Kali, but you're not "on the fast track" to becoming a Browncoat... you're clearly one already! 🤎

I can't believe they aired episodes out of order... What a huge and terrible mix-up! No wonder it didn't stick with the viewers well. I love that the fans are called Browncoats, though. I feel like I'm on the fast track to becoming one soon! 🤎

Aww man.. It's so sad to hear that it flopped so badly due to poor marketing. It always surprises me hearing about shows/films that have done well so many years after its initial launch. I am really excited to hear there is a movie to follow this show up with though!

I can't tell you how hard it was to resist the urge to just binge watch this show for you all the other day LOL. But I also really want the adventure to last and I'm the kind of lore lover that enjoys re-watching shows after I've done a reaction for them to pick up on things I may have missed and wow- I have a lot more to add onto going into episode 3 now! Definitely looking forward to it 🤎

Oh wow! Very awesome fun fact. Even the part about him being not so nice these days lol. I definitely enjoyed both of those Avenger films, so it's no surprise the writing in this is also enjoyable!

Each character definitely has their own moral compass leading them whichever way feels best! I mean in this episode we watched junkers try to take a job to steal medicine for a rich scary dude, but then when they found out where the medical supplies were supposed to go they completely changed their mind. "We're not thieves. But we are thieves" was honestly the best way Mal could have put it haha I can't wait to see how each of them continues to navigate the morally gray world around them! Makes things very interesting, for sure! And I totally agree about Kaylee! Somehow it's so refreshing to see a girly girl with a kind soul taking care of the ship's engine and mental health of those around her. She's a beautiful soul and such a bright light in that ship!

I love what you mentioned about how everything is very morally gray. The lines between 'good' and 'bad' are definitely very blurred. And each character seems to operate under their own moral spectrum as well. Very interesting to dive deeper into! I also really like Kaylee! At least in shows that I've watched, the engineer is typically the gruff and anti-social person who prefers to spend time in isolation tinkering on the ship haha. But Kaylee is the complete opposite and it's very cool to see!

20+ years later and you still have a massive fan base for this show. You see them at cons and some of the original cast will still do panels. People have been begging for a revival basically since this show was cancelled.

Fun fact: this show was written by the same man who wrote Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. There was also a short web series called Dr Horrible' s Sing-Along-Blog that he did which was amazing. He is generally thought of as a not nice man these days, but his work is very enjoyable.

Wow, Kali, you may have set a new reactor record! It took only one episode plus the cold open of the second for you to say, "I'm so sad that there's only one season of this!" Welcome to the Browncoats! 🤎

Lots of reasons this show didn't take off. Chief among them being that Fox aired the episodes out of order. Also moving the time slot around and the network not understanding how to market it contributed to audience confusion. You can't do those things with a show with such smart writing. But I feel this show was also somehow at once ahead of its time and perfect for it's time. Ahead because it probably would've done well on streaming, but also perfect for it's time because the limitations of network TV led to some awesome creative decisions. And without those I don't think it's the same show. The compression coil simply was just faulty. But we still ended up with 14 episodes of top tier television and one of the best movies ever made (I'll die on that hill).

Firefly is the best space western in the verse. Sadly, the downfall of the show was a multitude of factors, not the least of which was Fox airing episodes out of order, and at different days/times of the week. So it never gained enough traction to get renewed but the fans (known as Browncoats) kept asking for more which help lead to the film (Serenity) which would follow a little later.
