Firefly | Episode 3: Bushwhacked | Full Reaction

Okay.. Why was this one so freaking scary!? I was sweating 🤣 I officially have one single thing in common with Jayne- I'm absolutely terrified of Reavers lol. This episode made it very clear that the 'verse is a dangerous, unpredictable place. No one is truly safe.

In regards to you talking about the moral grey areas, my favorite line from episode 2 was when the sheriff told Mal that " when a man finds out all the facts about a situation then he has a choice to make". Mal replied " I don't think he does". In Mal's mind their is no choice to be made, you have to return the medicine. Great line.

You know, the Council or Alliance from Mass Effect is a great comparison! Massive organizations doing complicated jobs, often inefficiently, and getting people ground up in the gears of bureaucracy when they screw up. And with some real bad eggs doing bad shit in the shadows as well. I'm not even particularly defending the Alliance, per se, I'm all in for the crew of Serenity!

Chris Truex

Wow, this comment helped me look at the Alliance in such a truer light! I haven't seen Star Wars yet, but I have kind of loosely been basing my view on the Alliance as more of a 'Council' from Mass Effect lol. Thank you so much for sharing this insight!

I think it's an important aspect of this show that the Alliance is not the Empire from Star Wars, or Nazis, or whatever. They're a government, like ours. Some shady people doing shady shit there, obviously, but also a lot of people who are just regular soldiers and officers. Picture those Alliance soldiers as Winters, Lipton, and Malarkey. While Easy Company was dropping on Normandy, the United States had Japanese-Americans locked in internment camps. I honestly love that aspect of this show. I find Evil Empires tedious, because it makes a bunch of faceless goons that you can mow down guiltlessly. Alliance soldiers are just dudes. You can root against them, you can be on the side of our guys, but it makes things more grey, complex, and realistic. Enjoying your reaction so far!

Awesome pointing this out! River's gracefulness definitely stands out and that tip-toe through the ghost ship barefoot is really when I started to pick up on it. Even more impressive knowing the actress' background. I'll definitely keep an extra eye on her movements in future episodes- She really does have a mesmerizing feel about her..

Kali Wali

I agree! The libertarian thread runs strong throughout Firefly and Mal definitely embodies it so perfectly. His defiance of the Alliance isn't just about survival, but his own personal rebellion. The 'live free or die trying' mentality makes this series resonate on a deeper level, for sure.

Kali Wali

I can guarantee you, this show will surprise you beyond about any show you have ever seen. Many here have such a love for this show. It brings us joy to see somebody new come to appreciate it.

Kali, you mentioned River being bare foot when she entered the stricken ship. In the first episode, Simon described childhood River as someone to whom nearly everything came "as naturally to her as breathing does to us," including physical disciplines such as dance. This minor theme of River as "a creature of extraordinary grace" continues throughout the series, and for good reason: Summer Glau, the actor who plays River, studied ballet and modern dance for many years. I encourage you to pay attention to her movement whenever she's on screen, because she really is *very* graceful... with or without shoes!

The entire series has sort of a libertarian message - let me live my life free of authoritarian rule. Mal's criminal exploits are his way of continuing his war against the Alliance by being a thorn in their side.

I was always a little alarmed at how crass Mal was at Book and wondered if it was a 2517 thing or a Mal thing. I think going back into Episode 1 with that mindset helped me pick on the cross right away! His loss in faith.. Makes total sense now!

Kali Wali

Yessss Draugr for sure! With a mix of Skinner Brothers or Murfree Brood from RDR2 💀😩 I'm so glad I picked up on the cross. I was always wondering why he's so angry at Book and God, but seeing that the second time around changed so much for me about him!

Kali Wali

Yes, good job picking up on the scene of Mal kissing his cross versus his subsequent antipathy toward God! I think it took a half dozen viewings for me to notice, and perhaps only be because a reactor pointed it out... D'oh!

Phil Stubblefield

So I first recognized her from How I Met Your Mother hahaha. But just now it clicked where else I had seen her! Thank you for sharing this bc my brain has been spinning trying to place her lol

I can definitely say after rewatching episode 1 and 2 before sitting down to film 3 and 4 was a really awesome experience & I'm really happy I did! There's so much to absorb and the layers in this show are amazing. I can totally see how many rewatches would only make it more and more enjoyable, especially after experiencing the complete journey! I'll most likely be in the same boat lol. I'm really excited for this show to surprise me in ways I can't predict! I love how they leave so much open to interpretation and let you sit on ideas they've thrown out. Been a really awesome ride so far!

Kali Wali

Remembering back to what TV was like in 2002 I totally understand what you said about the opener variations lol. It seriously does help me understand more why Mal is so direct with Book. I'm so glad I re-watched and picked up on the little things because it made this episode so much more enjoyable and click more!

Kali Wali

I definitely didn't pick up on Mal and his cross during the first watch so I'm glad you pointed that out! There's so much about his character that I missed out on during my first watch that I'm now realizing through the second watch with you. Particularly with how much the war shaped who he is now With the way the Reavers are described in this and previous episodes, I'm getting a lot of the same vibes with them as I did with the Draugr in Hell Blade 2. Definitely a verrrry creepy episode LOL

Hey Kali, did you notice the actress that plays Inara is the same that played Vanessa in the movie Deadpool?

Lastboyscout73

I am not usually one to be overly effusive, but I have to say what an absolute joy it is to watch someone experience this show and just get it very quickly. I think the thing that many channel subscribers fail to recognize is that our appreciation for this show grew mostly through rewatches. What we know now, we didn't know when we first watched it. So the reactor is going to miss some things. Not catch some of the nuances. We all missed subtleties in our first watch. It's in the rewatch where the true love is built. My appreciation for this show has only grown every time I rewatch it. Every time. So it's a joy to see a sliver of that growth when you took the time to talk us through your rewatch. Time well spent. I remember my first watch of this show. I had so many wild ideas about what the reavers were and why River seemed connected to them. I won't mention them here for fear of accidentally spoiling the truth, but trust me. Wild is not a word that truly does justice to the ideas that were floating in my head at this point of my first time watching experience.

I didn’t even wait for fireworks. 😀. Also, just as an FYI, you’ll see them use the same or similar exposition openings on episodes. I think it was the way the network or the show runners felt would help anyone happening upon the show for the first time given all the scheduling changes and breaks that took place. And glad you picked up on Mal’s shift in spiritual belief/perspective following the end of the war. It adds so much to the reason he’s often so blunt with Book about religion/God.

Ian Forbes

LOL can you tell the fireworks kept me up too late last night? Thank you so much for letting me know 😆

Patreon title is listed as episode 4 instead of 3. YouTube title is correct though.
