Captain America: Civil War | Full Reaction

So, this marks our entry into Phase 3?? I felt the weight of its significance immediately. Watching Steve and Tony (my literal top 2 lol) battle it out and clash that way was heartbreaking. It was actually difficult to watch at times.

I did love the twist with our main villain in this one, though. Zemo... a villian not in seek or power, but revenge. He wanted to literally dismantle the Avengers from within. A true reminder that the greatest threats aren't always the loudest.

I'm leaving this one with a tummy aches and tissues lol. The raw, personal and painfull human fight between Steve, Tony, and Bucky was too much to handle. Am I ready for Phase 3?? I don't even know anymore lol

Thank you for your support here on Patreon!

Captain America: Civil War | Full Reaction

I 'm thinking that if this was a Mass Effect style decision that you would be on Team Cap Kali. Am I right ? In the comics the registration act was triggered after a young team of heroes called the New Warriors, whom were being followed by a reality TV show took on a small gang of bad guys. Unfortunately there was an Omega level threat called Nitro whom can detonate himself and the surrounding block when threatened. And the building was next to a school. So after 200 kids were killed the "accords" as such came into effect. Spidey starts on Stark's side but switches half way. Cap eventually surrenders after he sees what the war is doing to normal people which leads to his comic book death (ha came back !) This should have been an Avengers movie, It would be interesting to see what the Iron Man version would have been. Team Cap all the way.

pinkdino99

When someone is referred to as a 'Manchurian Candidate', it’s a reference to a certain movie (and a book) about a soldier who is brainwashed and ends up acting in favor of the enemy.

Hera Lux

I generally skip the reactors commentary at the end of the movie. I just prefer a reactors reaction, and not really their comments after the show. Y ours are interesting. Not commentary really. It's like you're explaining what happened in the movie to me, even though I saw this movie years ago, and have seen it many times since, and if fact just watched it again now, right along with you. . I just think it strange that so much of your comment is like this, even during the movie. It must be what being "man-splained" to feels like.

TheGuy

Im team Iron Man, but i think Steves point at the surface is right, you have to know that if you dont agree to these accords they will do it to you anyway, if they all would resist like Steve did, they would literally become war criminals and would have a very tough, maybe even imposible chance to actually fight crime and outer space battles, whereas Tonys way you can actually be disclosed to having a chance and being there when something threatens the World. Plus it def comprimised them to not be united in Infinity War.

I am shocked that you did not get that star wars reference from spider man. Have you not seen Empire strikes back or any of the star wars movies? If not put them on a list, those are classics. This one is one of the best MCU movies imo but it hard to rank because so much ist still to come

BigBrain69

There's a lot of to digest in this movie, but I just wanted your say your reaction to Captain America's biceps when hanging onto the chopper was very amusing 😂

KJ Gould

What i completely forgot was, did you watch the SQ 42 Gameplay Showcase at last Citizencon? Dont know if you are interested in the Singleplayer but if you are and havent watched it yet, you should watch it.

Curaitis

VKB´s...not only beautiful and smart but also flying with style. I love it. I had the chance to check it out a lot and its of course really exciting to have another system after such a long time with stanton alone. Biggest problem currently with the community are pvp, bugs and a new type of 30k, the 60k. I kid you not. Its basically a 30k but worse but 4.0.1 is around the corner and i hope it will help with it. Server Meshing works amazing imho, Pyro looks fantastic and there is a lot to do if you can live with gankers and griefers. Of course its a lawless system but players take it as far as camping the wormwhole to KoS everyone who comes through. Technically the whole 4.0 is way more stable than 3.XX, atleast for me. All in all its a good experience you just have to live, or die, with the pvp problems but might get fixed in the further away future with the new rep system and gameplay loops for bounty hunters. Overall, as you might know, 4.0 was a massive patch, not only content but also technology wise and i only touched the surface of it with what i wrote. Favorite Ship is a tough question. It depends of course what im doing. If i dont take into account the crew number, its the Polaris. That thing is a beautiful ship! but of course way to big for a daily driver, haha. I would say its the Zeus ES or the C1 Spirit. Both are great for every kind of gameplay but i also like my F7A MkII and the Terrapin Medic. I have ships for every type of gameplay so i change it up quite often.

Curaitis

she is extreeeemely strong!

Kali Wali

Awesome reaction!!!

Jonathan

That's a great observation, that parallel between the relationships that Harley (the kid from Iron Man 3) and Peter Parker have with Tony Stark. I hadn't thought of that before, but I agree it's very significant. 🤯👍

Onno Smits

Kali, after seeing how strong Wanda is, we need ur updated top 5. As far as power goes, she’s arguably the strongest since she has the mind stone powers in her and she punk’d vision. Whoever team she is on wins.

Shark23

Personal preference plays a huge role here but to have a super hero movie go this dark is what makes it so good. Plus to get an epic fight between all of the avengers and the epic finale between Stark and cap to me blows the second cap movie away. This was like an avengers film with it being cap centric and settled the debate with 1 on 1 cap takes iron man. This movie basically asks are you pro or anti government overreach, cap saying what if we need to go somewhere and they don’t let us or sending them somewhere they shouldn’t go makes the point, especially after shield/hydra and the council sending a nuke in the 1st avengers. Cap has the moral compass.

Shark23

The toby McGuire versions are a lot of folks favs. Especially spiderman 2 😁

Rashad Walker

Believe it or not a few more films ratchet it up even more down the road 😏

Rashad Walker

Also remember in age of ultron when tony and cap was chopping wood Tony told Steve I don't trust a guy without a dark side and Steve said maybe u havnt seen it yet. 😬 They foreshadowed this moment because cap knew about who killed Tony's parents.

Rashad Walker

I couldn't agree more.

Paul Wright

I totally agree. This movie's darker tone really sets it apart, and it makes those emotional punches hit even harder. Winter Soldier was incredible and definitely one of my favorites as well right now! And I'm obviously with you on that- It's so hard to pick a side! Cap's moral compass is always on point, but Tony's arguments are also very valid too. The frustration the world has against the Avengers makes sense.. And Rhodey's line about oversight is definitely one of those moments that makes you stop and think. For Tony to learn the truth that way.. and then spiral into pure rage and heartbreak was devastating. I think the only thing that kept me from breaking down into allll of the tears was just that I could FEEL Tony's hurt and rage and it made it just hard to breathe lol. TONY STANK hahahaha. Def one of my favorites too. A much much needed laugh at the end there 🤣🤣🤣

Kali Wali

Someone else pointed this out and I was mind blown at the awesome foreshadowing! 😱

Kali Wali

I love the 'Avengers 2.5' nickname because it honestly felt just like that! This was not just a Captain America film at all. It packed such a huge punch AND we met two new chonky Avengers! I really appreciate the Spider-Man recommendation and apparently really need to watch these! I've heard awesome things about them but never sat down to watch them myself. And I knoooow, you think with how much I love Sci-Fi games I'd have sat down to watch Star Wars already! I've only seen The Mandalorian so far in that entire franchise. Which I know is a very random way to start it off haha. But I'd love to dive into that entire series sometime. So hopefully I can get there sooner than later! See you in Doctor Strange!! ✨

Kali Wali

HAHA so true with Cap calling everyone a kid and why didn't I realize this. Thanks for answering my questions about that. Looks like I need to sit down and watch the Spiderman movies! I haven't seen any of them yet. But I do know through media that he got bit by a spider and now he's able to throw webs and be a super spider guy haha.

Kali Wali

Hahaha oh wow! Honestly think it's awesome how movies can hit us so differently depending on when and how we watch them. This one definitely requires background analysis before diving into hahaha. I can see how it would be difficult to enjoy this when all they do is bicker and fight and it feels so RAW the entire time that without any background into their mental state it probably just seemed like a bunch of superhero dudes on an ego trip or something lol. Love that you got to re-experience it with a fresh perspective though! You nailed it with your description of loyalty, fear, control, grief, and allllll of the other emotions driving these characters. This movie feels like an instant pot to me hahaha. Everyone's strengths and weaknesses collided in the most intense ways. It was honestly really uncomfortable. But I think that's what makes it so powerful and send such a deeper message. I don't think I sat back and relaxed once this film. My head was constantly on a swivel and I left feeling uneasy.. And omg, SAME about the reveal of what happened to Tony's parents!! That scene crushed my heart and soul. The way they tied it all together into the overarching story was next-level storytelling. I still can't believe THIS was our first look into Phase 3. I'm glad you enjoyed this one as much as I did!

Kali Wali

I completely agree about Zemo! The actor absolutely nailed that part. It was my first time seeing him in a role, but wow he nailed this role! I think what made him stand out to me as a villain is how grounded his motivations are. No over-the-top schemes, just a man with a plan driven by pure grief and a voicemail fueling it. It's chilling and brilliant! The diving deeper into Bucky's struggles would be incredible! I really love Bucky and wish he was part of the Avengers so I could put him on my top tier list. I love his character so much and I feel like every time I see him on screen I can feeeel what he is feeling. His journey is so layered, but there's more room to explore his inner demons further- Especially in a way that resonates with real-world struggles. I'd definitely love to see more about him. And I really get where you're coming from with Team Tony vs. Team Steve. Tony's perspective made a lot of sense on the surface. He was driven by his own guilt and desire to protect, but Steve's long-term view about trust and freedom really wins out once you reflect on it further. Their conflict was so well-written because it didn't give us any easy answers. It really made the viewer THINK about how they feel and weight their own pros/cons which I appreciate so much! Thank you so much for the Spider-Man context! I felt like I missed something huge here when they introduced him for the first time lol. I didn't realize Marvel and Sony struck a huge deal, but that must have been an awesome moment for Spider-Man fans! Crazy to think that it almost didn't even happen.. I have to say that I absolutely loveeee that you ended all of your thoughts with a Sam quote 🤍😱 It's one of my all-time favorites and one I've looked up on YouTube just to re-listen to again and again lately. It hits me every time. Thank you for sharing it again here! It kinda feels like a warm hug to all of us lore lovers out here that put so much heart and soul into the stories we love. As for 4.0- I haven't gone back into Star Citizen for a little over a year now sadly. My poor VKB's are sitting in the corner of my office closet collecting dust. The bindings from them are probably so far out of date by now, too lol. I'd looooove to pop back in and adventure around the verse again soon! Especially with Pyro coming in stages & looking amazing. My org had a falling out a few months ago, but they still play a little here and there. What's your favorite ship!? And I'd love to hear your thoughts about 4.0 if you've had a chance to check it out!

Kali Wali

A top 10 tier list might actually be inevitable at this point hahaha. These characters keep making it harder and harder to choose! Black Panther AND Spider-Man being introduced in the same movie was suuuuch a flex by Marvel lol. I can only imagine how crazy the theatre must have been! Even though I felt like I missed something with Spider-Man's reveal, it still hit perfectly, and I love the relationship him and Tony have! Reminds me of the little kid in the shed that helped Tony heal so much mentally after the nuke/space incident. Tony definitely needs the same healing now. Thanks so much for the note about Sokovia vs. Slovakia! I'll make sure to keep that dialogue out when I post it to YouTube because I'd hate to offend anyone by accident.. I'll try to keep it straight moving forward lol. Really appreciate you pointing it out so kindly. I'm chalking it up to my horrible memory with names including places haha.

Kali Wali

I liked that this movie was darker. Winter Soldier is still my favorite Cap movie, but this is a very close second. Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr just acted the hell out of it. It's so difficult to choose sides. I always tend to go with Cap because I feel like he always does the "right" thing. But Tony is right in this as well. I can only imagine the frustration the world must have being both grateful to and angry at the Avengers. As Rhodey said, "oversight can't be dismissed out of hand." That ending revelation and fight was just brutal. For Tony to have learned like that. I can't blame him for his reaction. Also, Tony Stank will always be one of my favorite Stan Lee moments!

Marty McGee

ah ok, I hadn't heard of the remake but the one starring Frank Sinatra was pretty good.

Glen Roberts

Also in winter soldier Natasha and Steve seen Howard death on the newspaper that Zola showed them down in the bunker so Steve didn't know at the time but he eventually found out it was Bucky who killed Tony's parents

Rashad Walker

Really enjoyed your Civil War (Avengers 2.5?) reaction. To carry on my compatriots earlier comments, if you want a origin on Spider-Man, watch either Spider-Man 1 with Tobey Maguire or Amazing Spider-Man with Andrew Garfield. Marvel Studios decided to opt out of an origin for Tom Holland's version and his first solo film takes place after Civil War. When Spidey makes an "Empire Strikes Back" reference, you said you didn't want to be spoiled. Does that mean you want watch those films eventually? I would definitely love to have discussions on that franchise here. Looking forward to Doctor Strange.

Paul Wright

Everyone is a kid compared to Steve Kali lol he's 100 yrs old. Wanda was born in 89 so she's around 26-27 in this. As far as spiderman is concerned u have to watch the toby McGuire and Andrew Garfield versions of spiderman they get more into his origin story , the writers felt like they didn't need to redo that all over again with this version so they basically introduced him in here already being spiderman

Rashad Walker

There's two Manchurian Candidates, a 60s one and a more modern remake, the older one is recommended more.

JD Nevesytrof

Me? I'm Team Cap through and through

The Dingo

So funny story - I saw this movie for the first time when it released in theaters, on a whim because my friends wanted to go. At the time, I really hadn't kept up with the MCU only watching a few Iron Man movies.... so I absolutely HATED everyone in this film LOL. But I just didn't get it at the time. I didn't have their backstories. I didn't understand what fuels each of them to fight, and what keeps them up at night. So I'm really glad I'm able to experience this movie again in a whole new light and really appreciate everything that's offered The size of the gray areas in this movie is so astronomically large haha. I'm with you on this one that I can't really pick a side, because I get it from each of their perspectives. This is what happens when you crank to the max all of their strengths and troubles. Loyalty, fear, control, grief, guilt, friendship, vengeance.... and it could just keep going. As hard as this movie is to watch at times, it really does teach us so much, and I'll always appreciate all the emotions it puts us through, and the uncomfortable perspectives it makes us think about When I say my jaw dropped at the reveal of what happened to Tony's parents, it *dropped*. I just love how deep the lore in the Marvel universe is, and how the stories just keep intertwining as we go from movie to movie. Amazing writing! And really enjoyed your reaction!!

M1 Maz

Woah! I love the point you made about Steve and Tony's characters essentially swapping their core philosophies. Steve questioning authority and trusting his own moral compass after learning how systems can be corrupted is such a powerful realization. It feels very raw and real but also surprising given where he came from. And Tony's arc is just... compelling as always lol. His journey from straight up narcissism to selflessness, driven by guilt and a desire to protect the ones he loves, is heartbreaking in a way because you can feel how much he carries on his shoulders and in his heart. It's honestly a great contrast from Steve, who is letting go of blind loyalty while Tony is clinging onto every mistake he's ever made. And you're right, it's so true that them crossing paths this way makes their conflict hit sooo much harder. I also agree that it's hard to pick a side (obviously lol I was so torn). The freedom vs. accountability debate was so well-written here that I can't really call one side completely right or wrong. I feel like the storytelling in Phase 3 has already kicked it up SO many notches just on this first film alone and that debate being so hard to wrap my head around. PLUS it makes the viewer respect the complexity of all characters and their own choices. Anywaysss really really hyped about Doctor Strange! Never heard anything about him before so I'm ready to meet this new possible Avenger. And with this first film kicking off Phase 3.. I can't wait

Kali Wali

I've obviously never seen "Manchurian Candidate" but now I'm really curious to check it out! Especially knowing how influential it might have been. It would also make total sense that the writers might have drawn inspiration from such an iconic story. A sleeper agent with no memory of their actions feels so haunting and definitely aligns with Bucky's tragic fate.

Kali Wali

Omggggg that's such a clever way to plant the seed. That line now carries so much more weight in hindsight. Awesome thank you for sharing this!

Kali Wali

If you ever go back and watch the winter soldier you will see the clues to Bucky killing the starks. In New Jersey Zola showed an article “starks die in car crash” at the end black widow says to captain “might not want to pull on that thread” that’s when he found out. The Russo brothers are on James Cameron level for directing

Shark23

Just a fyi, regarding the "Manchurian Candidate". It was a book and movie about a sleeper agent embedded within the U.S. who did not know that they were an agent until awakened by a code phrase so the parallels are obvious. Perhaps they borrowed from this for Bucky's background story and this was their way of paying homage to the original story. The movie is quite good.

Glen Roberts

This is an excellent point about Steve and Tony's opposite character journeys.

JD Nevesytrof

Yeah, this movie drags you into an alley and just kicks your ass completely 😅 One thing I absolutely adore with these two leads is how they both end up pretty polar opposite to where you would expect them to be. Captain America is traditionally loyal to America, he follows orders and doesn't go against the grain. But Steve's experience in Winter Soldier showed him that these trusted systems can be completely corrupted from the inside and he didn't even notice. So, now he questions authority and follows his own morality, rather than blindly following. Tony was a full on narcissistic and loner play boy. The last thing he would do is listen to anyone other than himself. But, his experience making a sacrifice in Avengers and the trauma he dealt with in Iron Man 3, pushed him to want to protect the people he cares about (and the world) by "putting a suit of armor around it." Age of Ultron shows the destruction he himself has caused. Because of that guilt, Tony doesn't trust himself to make these choices, and he would rather give the keys to someone else. They're both so opposite where they started, and it's such a magic trick how they get where they do, but it makes perfect sense. So many others have talked about which side is right, and I don't know. I would say that both sides have strong points that can't just be dismissed. Freedom of course is so important and can't be sacrificed. But.... at the same time these people with all these powers have got to exercise restraint and care when they save people, because there definitely has been unnecessary damage and death thanks to their specific actions. I'm very excited for you to check out Doctor Strange! Phase 3 just hits home run after home run, so buckle up Kali! See you next time!

Lorenzo Baxter

thats true

Armchair Rizzard

Man, were to begin with this. The Mini Avenger Movie brings a lot to the table. First off, i love Zemo, great villain and well played by Daniel Brühl. Second, i always thought it would be a great opportunity to dive deeper into Bucky´s struggles with his past, his inner demons and all the sad memories he had. Wouldnt that be a great movie or tv show, especially while so many in the real world also struggle with that? When i first saw the movie i was Team Tony. I could understand Steve but Tony had some points imho but after i had watched the movie and sat down and thought about it i realized that Steve was right. You cant trust politicians, like Steve said they would try to use them for personal reasons/gains and you have to trust yourself and each other to do the right things. Your final thoughts were quite good about the movie, the meanings, the deeper lore about the characters and how it all came together in the end between those three but it also made one thig clear. The whole Franchise lived and died by those 2 Characters and their Actors. To give a simple info about Spider Man. Back then Sony had the rights to make Spider Man Movies but the last ones were not as successfull as they wanted them to be. Marvel contacted them and came to an agreement to bring Spider Man into the MCU and Sony accepted with the detail that all Spider Man Movies are made by Sony Studios and not Marvel. So Civil War is the first appearance of Spider Man in the MCU. It was a big thing back then to see Spider Man finally back at Marvel, even if its just a co-production. And to give you a little quote fom Sam "I know. It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories, Ms. Kali. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy. How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened. But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer." Take care Edit; btw how is 4.0 going for you, if you had time to play it?

Curaitis

100% agree

The Dingo

Oh the Memes that came from this! They were so amazing

The Dingo

Sad as it is, I think Mrs. Spencer was entirely in her rights to blame Tony for her son's death because they were only in Sokovia because Tony created Ultron.

JD Nevesytrof

Marketing at the time was are you Team Cap or Team Iron Man. Team Cap for me. The battle at the end was both amazing and heartbreaking. When Cap drops the shield my emotions were all over the place. Just an amazing movie imo.

Lastboyscout73

Honestly can't lie, Phase 3 marks the greatest discrete run of films I've seen in a long time.

JD Nevesytrof

To help with some production context, back in the day Marvel was facing bankruptcy and sold off rights to avoid it. They sold The X-Men (which includes Deadpool) and the Fantastic Four to Fox (which Disney bought a few years ago so they are back under the Marvel production umbrella. They sold Spider-Man to Sony (who loans him out to Marvel at times). And they didn’t sell the Hulk outright to Universal but they sold specific film distribution rights to them which is part of the reason why he is in the MCU but there hasn’t been another solo Hulk film (the details of it all are confusing) Regarding Spider-Man, given the popularity of the 5 live-action Sony films (3 with Tobey Maguire and 2 with Andrew Garfield), Kevin Feige and team assumed audiences were well aware of his backstory for the purposes of his inclusion in the MCU (for me as a comic book reader back in the day, I also think Tom Holland is the most age-appropriate of the three actors who have played him live-action in films). While you don’t need the info from those prior films for immediate Easter egg references in the MCU, I do recommend seeing them for context and I’m sure others will be more vocal about that (and your mentioning not having seen The Empire Strikes Back 😎) As for other things you mentioned, the Manchurian Candidate is a film from 1962 (and remade in 2004) which has some similarities to Bucky’s journey. And sorry to be pedantic but Zemo, Wanda, and the events in Age of Ultron took place in the fictional country of Sokovia (though maybe Slovakia is the inspiration for it). 🙂

Ian Forbes

Awesome reaction! It might be time to expand your tier list to a top 10 at this rate... 😂 Getting both Black Panther and Spider-Man introduced in this film was a real treat! They used Spider-Man a fair bit in the promotional material, so his appearance wasn't a surprise at the time. But the fact that Black Panther was in it was a bit more of a "secret" at the time of release. My theater went nuts when he appeared. A quick note; Sokovia is a fictional country in the MCU. Slovakia is a real country, which does bear some resemblance, but its inhabitants probably wouldn't be too flattered by a comparison. 😅 You misspoke a bunch of times in the outro. 🤐

Onno Smits

Be careful what you ask. You may not be ready for the answer.

The Dingo

Absoluuuuutely blown away with this one. Where do we even go from here!? 🫨 Enjoy!

Kali Wali

I had no idea about the Edgar Wright directing drama.. I haven't seen the Hot Fuzz or Scott Pilgrim yet, but I absolutely loved Shaun of the Dead and think the vision would have worked very well with Ant-Man if he had been able to complete the project. Still, I did enjoy Ant-Man a loooot. I love that it left me feeling wholesome instead of shocked haha. It was a refreshing Marvel movie & honestly a great, lighter note to end Phase 2 on. Now Phase 3??? My gosh. What a way to begin. For the first time I'm scared to progress through these MCU films 😭🫨 But still very excited to see what's next!

Kali Wali

I hope you have a great day at work!! Hopefully you can get off soon & relax with some Captain America! I was so blown away by the tension and rawness of this one.. I knew after the first few scenes this wasn't the same tone as the others so far.. 👀😮‍💨

Kali Wali

oooo Scotland!? I hope you have a great trip! ✨

Kali Wali

It looks like toy were as blown away as I hoped! Can't wait to watch this with you later today!

The Dingo

Phase 3 is my favorite of the MCU. So excited for these! And Ant-Man has grown on me (pun intended). Originally (and still to some degree) I was bummed that Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim) didn’t end up directing it due to some apparent creative differences with the Marvel team. Wright’s DNA is still in there as he had been developing the project for years but I still wish I could have seen his vision for the character and film. With that said, I still very much enjoy the Ant-Man films, even if only to help add some levity to an increasingly more dire set of circumstances being thrown at our heroes.

Ian Forbes

I'm upset that I just clocked into work. I can't wait to get off and watch this reaction though! Because of the moral dilemma within this movie, it is one of my favorite pieces of media. Back then I was a big Iron Man hater, but as years have passed, I have grown to see this conflict much more evenly. Anyway, I have to get back to work, but I hope you are having a great day! And thank you so much for the hard work you put in!

iameNeRG (Rodney Gant)

Thank you!! 😭🩷🩷

Kali Wali

Really want to watch this but I'm in Scotland til the weekend. Bah!

Simon Haynes

Keep up the great work. I know we are all so proud of your continued A tier level of content you constantly put out.
