Firefly | Episode 5: Safe | Full Reaction

Safe felt everything but that lol. I felt like the ground got pulled right out from under me in this one. Serenity's crew, my newfound family, was suddenly broken in ways I didn't expect. Seeing Simon and River cast out the way they were felt like a deep betrayal I couldn't shake. This wasn't just an episode- It was a test of trust, love, and resilience. And by the end, I knew I'd fallen even harder for this crew (and even consider myself one of them as a viewer hehe)

This was Summer Glau 1st role, she was a professional dancer before trying acting. The way she moves is always has a graceful poetry to it.

The scenes w/River & Simon are some of the most touching. Her reveling to her brother just how much deep down she gets what he's sacraficed for her, and "found her broken" & saying "I'll get better" as if wanting to just to make him feel better. It's beautiful & heartbreaking. The shows dialog is as exceptional as it gets.

I really love that in this episode we got to dive deeper into Simon and River's stories! They're both such interesting characters, and having a younger sister myself, I can totally relate to Simon's overprotectiveness, and just how much he tries to keep her safe. It was also super refreshing to see a more normal side of river for a change, just joking and dancing. Speaking of, I also got full chills like you when she started dancing hahaha. That whole scene is so cool jumping between the dancing and the shootout, the way they filmed it Had a verrrrrry busy (and late) day at work, so there's no better way to spend my Friday night than relaxing and hanging out here :) Thank you for the amazing content! I'm off to watch your next episode now!

My personal favorite episodes are all in the last half. Can't wait to rewatch them again. Mal's "you're on my crew" response to Simon does so much to cement their relationship. He did something the Tam parents refused to do, and even in that brief moment you can see how much Simon feels it. Such a great episode!

Okay so I thought he looked VERY familiar! 🤣

Hahaha! I'm so glad you've found me at the perfect time. I've been looooving my time through Middle-Earth AND the 'Verse these past couple weeks. I feel like I've died and gone to lore heaven lol Enjoy & Welcome! 💚

This is my very first Funko and I gotta agree with you.. I may start collecting these adorable little things 🤣😱 there is even a little teddybear on Kaylee's pants! I heard this rumor going around a lot more just now on the first episode of Firefly on YT lol. I'm not sure how to feel about it, but it's very similar to your thoughts. Sometimes these days they take a great thing and completely wreck it.. Hopefully that isn't the case and it's something we can all enjoy! But I'll keep my hopes kinda low until I see more lol

You're absolutely right that "simpler" doesn't align with what Mal sees as right. His willingness to make impossible decisions, even when they are so costly, really show his true heroic side! Nathan Fillion's perspective is fascinating! It makes a ton of sense, especially with how fiercely he has hung onto those connections (his religion change, book, going to the bars on union day). Now looking at this episode in hindsight, you're totally right that Mal probably believed them to be relatively 'safe' in that moment. Now looking back, Mal peaked in this episode for me lol. I feel like this verse was placed here to show just how much fear and superstition can shape the 'verse in truly terrifying ways. That line is a bit chilling especially knowing it's a direct quote.

this is exactly how i feel. I subscribed for Lord of the Rings and I was delighted to see she is also watching Firefly. I'm eating good this month.

Of some note, young Simon Tam was played by a young Zac Efron in his first acting role.

Did you know I was coming or something? lol You GET me with Lord of the Rings, my favourite movies, and I find out you're doing Firefly too, my fav TV series, short as it was :( Get out of my head, Kali! (but don't, pls :P)

I'm not a toy guy, but I suddenly find myself jealous of your Kaylee figure thingy whatever-it's-called. Anyway, something I remember the cast talking about is how they all spent their downtime in that dining room set just hanging out together. The chemistry was so perfect they became a legit found family. Not just the characters, but the cast and crew too. Which so obviously shines through on camera. And, with all due respect to those wishing Disney will reboot the series, that's the reason why it can never be rebooted. This was lightning in a bottle. Not to mention I don't trust Disney to recognize the true reasons why we love this series so much. In their effort to recreate it, all they'd likely do is make another soulless cash grab series. But nothing would make me happier than to be proven wrong about that.

Great reaction. You are starting to get Mal and the 'verse he lives in. Mal is very protective of his crew. Book made this point in an earlier episode as well. There is a lot of bad out there and all he has is his ship and found family. Even though things might be "simpler" without the Tams, "simpler" is different than what Mal sees as right. The heroic nature of Mal is that Mal makes decisions that he cannot afford to make. In Nathan Fillion's eyes, each member of the crew reflect something Mal has lost. So he holds these lost pieces of himself close to his heart. There was no way that Mal was not coming back for Simon and River. When Mal and the ship left to save Book, Mal had some reason to believe that Simon and River would be safe for a while. He knew the hill-folk snatchers were interested in Simon for his medical skills. Mal was surprised that the situation escalated so quickly and dangerously for the Tams. He expressed this by saying, "Gotta say doctor, your talent for alienating folks is near miraculous. " As for what the hill-folk teacher said, "thou shall not suffer a witch to live"...this is an actual bible verse (Exodus 22:18).
