Doctor Strange | Full Reaction

This felt like stepping into a whole new dimension of the MCU, literally! I absolutely loved the way magic was introduced as an entirely new layer of power and storytelling in this universe. The visuals were actually mind-bending, but it was the philosophy of magic- its price, its purpose, and its potential- that had me hooked from the very beginning.

I also gave a longer introduction in this one. After sitting with Captain America: Civil War for a while, I realized how much it shifted my entire perspective on certain characters. So... My Top 5 Avengers ranking has gotten a bit of a shakeup. I tend to rant a bit, so you can skip forward to the 6:46 mark if you want to skip that hahaha.

Doctor Strange | Full Reaction

Comments

Mister Doctor ? Kali you never have to apologise for your rants. I'm certain I'm not alone in saying that this is one of the reasons we watch your streams ! Benedict Cumberbatch is an incredible actor. May I recommend Sherlock which is a modern day version of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Feature length episodes... really REALLY strong ! And Cumberbatch is a perfect Holmes. It's a little more cerebral than the Downy Jnr versions (which were also great). This has the most meta joke in any MCU movie or show. Earlier Strange says to Wong "people used to find me funny..." Wong retorts "did they work for you ?" Later Strange cracks a joke and Wong laughs... why ? Because Wong NOW WORKS FOR STRANGE ! I would have so stopped off for noodles in Hong Kong...

Your welcome!

Thank you for these!!

Just to clear up a few things , jasper sitwell mentioned Steven strange in winter soldier when he told Steve everyone who's a threat to hydra would be targeted with Bruce banner. Dr strange isn't an avenger, there will be some heroes who come that necessarily aren't avengers but may work with them. Marvel comics has groups like the fantastic four , X-Men and the avengers along with other super teams but u also have heroes that are solo or work alone

Another great reaction

Oh not to spoil you but you will have to watch the original Spider Man Trilogy and the 2 Amazing Spider Man Movies for the MCU. Same goes for the X-Men and Fantastic Four Franchise cause both of them will be a part of phase 5 and it helps to have some context.

Curaitis

Dormammu: YOU WILL NEVER WIN! Steve Rogers: I can do this all day. Also, regarding why Strange can't have both his hands restored and his sorcerer life...I think it's because his hands restored would only let him go back to his 'normal', vastly more limited life, where he valued himself above all. They're unnecessary to his new existence and they also serve as an object lesson that one must sacrifice and sometimes that sacrifice must last all one's life.

JD Nevesytrof

Doctor Strange is definitely somewhere in my top 5. Plus Benedict Cumberbatch is fantastic in everything he plays. I feel like every Avenger learns the "It's not about you" lesson at some point. Strange really takes it to heart though, and that's why I love him.

Tony and Steve were given each a piece of advice by the dying mentors who made them who they were. Yinsen told Tony "don't waste your life." He saw Tony was on a path that was not conducive to the greater good and now that he was being shown his life's mistakes and given a second chance by escaping his captors, he could take his incredible intellect and wealth and do something with it. By contrast, everything about Steve Rogers that he took with him into the super-soldier pod was already everything he needed to make the world better, including the intention to, he just had to be given the physical means to accomplish it. That's why Dr. Erskine wordlessly pointed at his heart as he lay dying. Unlike Tony who needed to change his entire attitude, Steve was being told, "never change who you are, a good man." Both of them internalized this guidance, both made mistakes along the way, but each time it was out of a desire for protection, Tony the world and Steve his dearest friend and brother. These are the trials that make true heroes.

Oh man, where to start with this reaction ?!? I am further impressed with you as a reactor and every time (without warning) you go and elevate the respect and trust in your content. I get the reason why this or that hero becomes favorites and how they resonate or not with individuals. You took your time, kicked it around and shared your take on it. I thought it wise not to pick a side during your reaction. I feel for Steve as he had to keep questioning his morals and values as the world changed. His belief in duty. As a veteran, you take an oath against all enemies foreign and domestic. I took that oath but really had some mental gymnastics with the domestic part. Kent state comes to mind and just how blindly are we to follow orders? (my son attends) When Mr. Doctor was in his 70's style astral projection, when you noticed the pretty butterfly, were you aware that you were wearing a shirt covered with them ?!? lol This is one of my favorite MCU movies and struggle to understand how it did not do so well in theaters. I really enjoyed your experience with the medical parts and the confirmation that it was accurate (I love that). The writing and acting in this was top notch and had some moments where we can gain a little insight and maybe time (see what i did there?) to reflect. Well I went on long enough. I really do enjoy your content, best wishes~

This movie took me by complete surprise, and I love it all the more for that! Compared to most of the other past MCU movies focusing on tech, bio enhancements, or god powers, I love that this one was all about the mind and the metaphysical. Really focusing on purpose and perspective when it comes to self improvement. And what the ancient one said to Strange - about him not chasing success, but instead fearing failure.... oh man that is something that me back in college and my early working years really needed to hear. A lot of good stuff in this movie! Your intro inspired me to re-evaluate my top 5 haha. At #1, still got Iron Man. He definitely dropped a bit with the state he's been in the recent movies, but he's still hanging on haha. The big change for me was Captain America now moving to #2. I always used to see Cap's behavior as him being defiant, or stubborn. But watching these movies with you has opened my eyes to something. That Cap acts in the way that the world, and especially those around him *need* him to act. Not *want*. Those actions can be difficult at times, but he has the strength to do them. So I have a lot of admiration for him now! #3 Rocket bc he's awesome haha, #4 Widow who's dropped a bit (for.... reasons hahaha), and then #5 is kinda open for me. I have Wanda there, but I'm getting a feeling Black Panther might move up. I loved his character in Civil War and I want to see more now. So I'll def revisit this once I watch the first Black Panther movie!

I can neither confirm nor deny this. However, if you have any questions that you want to Google but worry about spoilers (whether about the Infinity Stones or any other part of the MCU), you are more than welcome to message me and I will answer them for you. I'd say to post them here but I don't know everyone that subscribes to your channel and worry someone might spoil something for you. I might tease you about being bored with your content, but I am far from bored! I love your reaction, the honesty and surprise make for good entertainment to say nothing of your reasoning ability!

The Dingo

Ditto! Perfectly said!

I'm glad my opening thoughts about Cap and Tony resonated with you!! Cap is such a powerful example of standing firm in your values, even when the world is telling you to compromise. And it's beautiful to me.. I love how you framed the figth with Tony, too. Cap wasn't trying to hurt him, just stop him, in a way, and help him see the bigger picture. I agree he may be fictional, but his character is something we should all strive to be like! I also loved this first deep dive into MCU magic! Loki and Wanda were small glimpses into it, but this film fully embraced it and brought on a mind-bending experience! I can only imagine how crazy this must have felt in IMAX!! Someone else mentioned Dormammu being voiced by Cumberbatch! It seriously makes this final confrontation even more meta!! What an awesome detail that makes you look at the film completely different.. And there's that line again going through my head, "The price will be high" πŸ‘€ I'll definitely keep Mordo and Strange's comic history in mind! I keep meaning to pick up the comics from my library (if they even have them) but keep forgetting so hopefully I'll get on that soon lol. Thank you as always for your comment and thoughts! It's always awesome hearing your insight & I appreciate how much you notice the depth of these stories too! See you in another Guardians of the Galaxy!

Kali Wali

I have to say first that your opening comments about Cap and Tony couldn't have been put better. Before you saw Civil War I couldn't give you the complete reason why Cap is my favorite Avenger without spoiling any of the journey, but your recap of it all is exactly why he is my favorite. His moral compass, his love for his friends and his capacity to do what is right even when other people are telling him it's wrong. I never took the fight between him and Tony at the end was him trying to hurt Tony but to disable his suit, take him out of the fight and give Tony a chance to see past his pain. He may be a fictional character but his commitment, strength and compassion are something to strive for. I remember at the time when Dr. Strange came out that it was Marvel's first push into the magical realm. Yes, you saw some with Loki (but that was Asgardian) and some would argue Wanda but this was the first fully magic based movie to introduce the concept to the fans and basic movie goers. Before this movie, Marvel tried to keep it mostly grounded in realism. It was an amazing movie to see in theaters. The cinematography was just mind blowing in IMAX. Just an FYI, Dormammu was also voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch in this movie. Also Mordo and Dr. Strange have a big history in the comics so you can choose to look at that or not. Just another amazing reaction, you are very inciteful and pick up on things very quickly. I am very impressed.

Lastboyscout73

Thank you so much for this breakdown! I've been terrified to google anything about Infinity Stones because I feel like we're really leading up to something here with them πŸ‘€

Kali Wali

I hope you enjoy this one! You're right- I really loved it a lot and it had such a beautiful message within it 🀍 I'm excited you're going to hang out for the LoTR trilogy here! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.. I'm still riding that lore wave and can't wait to get deeper invested with the books sometime soon! Let me know how your journey goes!

Kali Wali

In case no one reminded you yet, here are the Infinity Stones you have seen so far: 1. The Space Stone (the Tesseract from Captain America: The First Avenger) 2. The Mind Stone (Loki's staff from Avengers) 3. The Reality Stone (the Aether from Thor) 4. The Power Stone (the Orb from Guardians of the Galaxy) 5. The Time Stone (the Eye of Agamotto from Doctor Strange) There are 6 total, and you haven't seen the last one yet. I won't tell you the name or what movie it's in to avoid spoilers.

The Dingo

I definitely agree that Doctor Strange's confidence and accomplishments were well-earned and I can definitely see how that would come across as self-assurance rather than arrogance. It's funny because after I saw him kind of side hug the mother in the waiting room after saving the bullet brain patient, I thought he was super humble. Then the hallway scene happened where he basically sang his own praises the entire time and I kind of thought "hmm.. A doctor version of Stark lol" I think what makes his journey so compelling is how the Ancient One helps him recognize that his achievements, while impressive and great, aren't the ONLY thing that defines him. It's like she keeps challenging him to look beyond himself (his ego) and how much more he's capable of when he lets go of control and embraces humility. The 50% humbleness to 100% is a great way to describe this! His growth felt so earned by the end of the movie, and I think that's what made his arc so great! He didn't lose his confidence.. He just learned to balance it with selflessness. Awesome new character!!

Kali Wali

I haven't seen any of those works yet! Lost was highly recommended today randomly on YouTube lol and Star Trek has definitely been recommended as well. Glad you loved this reaction! I really enjoyed this movie a lot and it was a pleasure watching it with you all!

Kali Wali

Yesss the watch! I definitely though it was initially just his last "materialistic" item that he got to keep because he seemed super into watches in the beginning lol. But wow, it turned into such a powerful symbol for him. Also yes, the fact that Strange doesn't fix it definitely feels like a reflection of how he's learned to accept imperfection and 'failures' both in himself and the world. Such a subtle but meaningful detail! I didn't realize Doctor Strange and Spider-Man were created by the same team! I'm excited to see more Spider-Man in the future! I still need to watch the original ones at some point. The multiverse is looking so cool so far! The idea of drawing power from other universes has me asking so many questions lol. I love how all of these mysteries keep adding layers to the story because in between watches it lets the viewer dig deep in crazy rabbit holes lol. And I'll add "12 Years a Slave" to my list! I'm also very interested now to see if I can spot Cumberbatch for myself in The Hobbit when I watch them! But I definitely agree that the cast in this one was top tier! I feel like it definitely elevated the movie so much in my book. I also now apparently have a tiny crush on Doctor Strange πŸ˜πŸ˜‚

Kali Wali

Sad fact: the Ancient One character in the comics was a Fu Manchu stereotype. Marvel wanted to avoid losing the China market, so the writers avoided all stereotypes by whitewashing the character, which is controversial in itself. Essentially, it was a no-win situation on the character, but Swinton did a remarkable job on the role. I've respected her since playing Jadis in Narnia.

Paul Wright

Just got home and I can't wait to open and watch with you! From reading your sypnosis, I already know how much I will enjoy watching your react to this!! I also just want to say thank you for reacting to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It is a franchise that I have never once been interested in seeing myself, but I am more than intrigued to get invested now. Thank you Kali!!πŸ™πŸΎπŸ™πŸΎ

iameNeRG (Rodney Gant)

Definitely agree with you that Doctor Strange opens up the universe even more! I love that the MCU has been showing us how vast the multiverse gets while also keeping each story personal and grounded. It's a really neat balance. Benedict Cumberbatch was definitely born for this role lol. The fact that he also voices Dormammu is such an interesting meta layer!! Kind of just blew my mind here haha. So essentially he is outsmarting himself in that scene to get past his own ego.. That's so deep! And thank you for the infinity stone count! I was losing it and thought this was the final one we have found. I've been terrified to google anything about them because they obviously play a HUGE part in what is to come. There is something definitely deeper and darker at play here! So thank you for this! I really also love the connection you pointed out with Kaecillius and Strange's earlier disbelief. It's such a full circle feeling that really shows how deep Strange's arc is. So now your Dormammu theory feelins even stronger with that in mind haha See you in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2!!

Kali Wali

thank you! 🀍

Kali Wali

I had a feeling that Mordo talking about how naturally gifted Doctor Strange is was a bit of foreshadowing! Excited to see him in more throughout this phase!

Kali Wali

As always, outstanding REACTION!!! I love your thorough analysis of the movies that you react to. In my opinion, Dr. Strange wasn't self-centered. He was just comfortable in his own skin. He wasn't arrogant, he was confident, and he knew exactly what he wanted in life. His ego was well-earned. As Dr. Strange said, he got his MD and PhD at the same time with a photographic memory. However, his humbleness was at 50% at the beginning of the movie, the Ancient One brought his humbleness to 100%.

Jonathan

Michael Giacchino was one of the first composers after Williams, Shore, and Elfman that I really was enamoured by. His work on LOST, Star Trek, and Rogue One made him the perfect candidate for this film. It's a great theme and score, and I think he ended up doing at least one of the Spiderman (with Tom Holland) movies as well. Loved watching along with the full movie reaction too. Thanks for making those available to patrons!

Matthew Murdick

Knew you would love it. So many things to say. First, his watch. Strange was willing to get his ass kicked, just to protect the watch, it was important because it was a gift. At the end of the movie, the watch is still broken, even though Strange could just, rewind it and fix it. I think there's significance in that. Doctor Strange was created in the 60's, by the same team that invented Spider-Man. Stan Lee, and Steve Ditko created them. Most of the others were Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Then Jack Kirby alone created the Eternals, which will come up later... Anyway, there's a lot of setting up the multiverse here. Drawing power from other universes. What universes? Where does the power they use to cast their spells come from? Who is aware of the Ancient One's death in other parts of the multiverse? Could that be impacting things? The Cast is amazing. You should take Chiwetel EjioforΒ΄s "12 Years a slave" to your must watch list. Little hint for the Hobbit Trilogy. Benedict Cumberbatch is in it and im curious if you will find out who he is. Mads Mikkelsen is one of the best and always worth a watch and Rachel McAdams and Tilda Swinton are always a joy imho. Anyway, its getting late here. Great reaction as always Kali. Take care little edit: second time we saw little Kali swooning, very cute.

Curaitis

Hey Kali! I love this movie! It's so cool how they introduce more cosmic elements to the MCU in little micro doses. Like how Guardians of The Galaxy really opened up the universe to all these things out there, Doctor Strange takes that a step further with the forces of magic, plus the idea of a Multiverse. Benedict Cumberbatch just kills it every role he's in. He's super great as Doctor Strange. Something kind of meta about this film is that Benedict Cumberbatch also voices Dormammu. I think thematically this really fits, Strange is facing down the darkest pieces of himself in someone else. Like him vs his own ego in a way. Might not be accurate but I love to think about stuff like that. This is the fifth Infinity Stone that's been introduced! We have the purple stone in the Orb from Guardians, the Tesseract, The Aether from Thor 2, the Mind Stone from Lokis Scepter which is now in Vision, and this stone in the Eye. Only one more that we have yet to see. I love all these pieces that get placed across these movies. Even though individually they're telling their own story, there's also an overarching story connecting all these characters. Like Thor said in Age of Ultron, the stones showing up this much is no coincidence, and someone has been playing quite the intricate game. πŸ‘€ The MCU is one of the few examples where these big stories over multiple franchises are told really well and I love how they managed to pull this off. Tilda Swinton I always love seeing whenever she's on screen. There's a whole platter of amazing talent here, with Rachel Mcadams too! Quite the star studded film when it's layed out! One small moment I think gets overlooked is when Kaecillius is locked in that restraint and he called all the people he killed "Tiny, momentary specks within an indifferent universe." Strange makes a weird face when he says that because that's actually word for word what he said to the Ancient One earlier when he was in utter disbelief over the books she showed him. Even in the zealots, he saw the worst version of himself. That's why I hold firm on my meta Dorammu theory πŸ˜… this whole movie is Strange facing himself and seeing how he's treated the world in the depths of his ego. Can't wait for the laugh fest in Guardians 2 Kali, see you then!

Lorenzo Baxter

Always rant, it's your channel lol but most of us are interested to know your thoughts on these art forms.

KJ Gould

Yes, we appreciate you, Kali!

Will Castillo

Love this movie so much. Welcome to magic in the MCU. Strange is so arrogant like Tony, but the Ancient One humbles him in so many ways. Wait till he realizes his potential later. Looking forward to seeing your reaction.

Paul Wright

@Kaliwali - Ignore them! They dont appreciate you like we do!

Simon Haynes

Love that you are cranking through these.

Trevor Go

Iron Man will always be my number one... for reasons that cant be discussed here yet.

Simon Haynes

I really, really loved this one! It was also awesome seeing a surgeon turn 'super' since I used to work alongside them for years before I started YouTube. He is definitely your typical surgeon in every sense lol. And I mean that in the best way, but they all do tend to have this personality (and love their music in the OR suites lol) Enjoy!

Kali Wali

I think I have PTSD from YouTubers telling me to shut up all the time hahaha. Thank you for the kind reminder that y'all love to hear my thoughts over here 🀣🩷 I hope you enjoy this one!

Kali Wali

Why in the world would we want to skip your opening commentary?!? That's why we subscribe: we *like* to hear your thoughts! 😊

Phil Stubblefield

Yay! Lets gooooooooo. Looking forward to this one.
