Firefly | Episode 7: Jaynestown | Full Reaction

So here I was, settling in for another episode of Firefly. Blissfully unaware that I was about to witness the rise of a mud-covered legend 🀣 I spent the next 45 minutes questioning everything I thought I knew about heroism, idol worship, and why anyone would ever sculpt a statue of Jayne Cobb out of mud LOL. How do these episodes keep getting better and better!?

So many thoughtful moments. " You Don't fix Faith..it fixes you".; "A man is a boy old enough to ask that question". Even Jane's simple, "it don't make no sense"...fantastic character & story development.

I agree! It's amazing how the show can weave humor, heartbreak, and deep character insights all at once. I hadn't thought about Mal being a father figure to Kaylee until the next episode, actually! During those quiet moments of panic trying to figure out a solution to fixing the ship. But now that moment with Mal walking in makes so much more sense in that moment! It was probably mortifying for Simon, hence his speech about being proper. Thank you for this food for thought!

This episode always gets me. The sad, introspective version of "The Hero of Canton" playing out the ending. The beautiful parallels between River / Book's story and Jayne / the mudder's. Jayne walking back onto the ship with blood on his hands. Fess's epic manspreading, establishing dominance over his weirdo father. I think the main reason Simon reacted the way he did when Mal woke them up is because Mal is a father figure to Kaylee, so naturally, Simon doesn't want him to think that he's taking advantage of her. And also, a girl's dad walking in on an intimate moment like that is kind of a guy's worst nightmare lol.

Yesssss. Jayne is so unapologetically himself, quirks, flaws, and all. And somehow that ends up being his charm haha. I went from rolling my eyes at him to kinda loving him in a weird, grudging way hahaha. And ahhh, my heart for Simon and Kaylee! Their slow-burn romance was not expected, but I'm so glad it began in this episode! Watching Simon trip over himself while Kaylee stays so sweet and true is both adorable and painfully relatable haha. And I totally agree. The parallel between Book's talk with River and the Mudders' faith in Jayne is such a great observation!! It's so layered. Belief can be so messy and misguided, but still so powerful. It's awesome how this show is so much better during a second watch!

I don't want it to ever end!! 😭

LOL let's just call it 'a delicate issue' and leave it at that πŸ‘€πŸ˜…

I think this is definitely what makes Firefly so special to everyone! It sneaks in deep cuts and thought-provoking moments into all the hilarious moments and action! I love how this episode made me see heroism in all its messy, imperfect forms. And in such a hilarious way haha

I honestly couldn't have said this better myself. Simon's arc has grown on me, too. It's rooted in that deep struggle of identity and adaptation. This episode had OG Simon's circular glasses and proper demeanor running through my mind after he confessed to Kaylee how lost he is. You nailed it: He's this brilliant, privileged guy who's now completely out of his depth, but he is doing all of it for love. And omg yes, his awkwardness with Kaylee is just beautiful and painfully relatable lol. It makes me look back on that scene in Jiangyin where Kaylee is trying to find him a gift and he craps all over it AND her AND Serenity... He is just trying to find his footing and it's easy to forget where he actually comes from. But for him to say in this episode that she is pretty especially with grease was so sweet and felt like the true Simon opening up about things he thought improper to say. And I loooove how you describe the tension between his feelings for Kaylee and his sense of duty to River. It's really what makes his character so layered and relatable. But watching him stumble and grow is half the charm, right? lol And as for the "idiot who canceled this show".... PREACH. I'm not even done with it yet and I can already feel the pain of watching the final episode. This show is just too good. And it really does keep getting better and better every episode.

Oh Jayne haha... Like you, I didn't like him at all early on. And I searched far and wide trying to find some redeeming qualities for him, before realizing I was overlooking the most important one: That Jayne is unapologetically.... Jayne LOL. And he don't need to be any more than that, with all his quirks, charms, and flaws. Kaylee and Simon are also adorable together. Despite their differences, and Simon not being able to get out of his own way haha, I love that they've finally got something going I also love the parallels between Book's talk with River about belief and faith in the bible, with that of the Mudders with Jayne. I didn't really pick it up the first time I watched, but put some of the pieces together the second time here!

Oh btw Kali, you are now officially at the half way point of the series with the best yet to come.

Referring to Inara's client "What kind of problem? Is it like...I don't wanna say..." Were you about to say "blue ⚽⚽s?" Was the pure, sweet lady with the dulcet voice about to talk about such things? πŸ˜„πŸ˜„

Ah, Jayne. The real Hero of Canton. This was definitely his episode. But I have a word to say on behalf of my boy, Simon. As much as I wish I could say that I relate the most with someone heroic, like Mal, or hilarious like Wash, I have to be honest with myself. I most relate to Simon. i feel his struggle in this episode. Here's a man that was raised in the lap of luxury. Incredibly smart, handsome, and successful. Now out of his element in a world he feels completely out of place in. Surrounded by people he doesn't really understand. He clearly has these feelings for Kaylee that he wrestles with considering where he came from and why he is there. And his number one concern is protecting River. Anything he does that's not related to that objective probably feels like selfish distraction. Of course he's going to get his foot caught in his mouth quite a bit while he continues to process everything. And it's not so easy to be honest about his feelings for Kaylee because I'm sure they make him feel more guilty than anything else. Hence, he is just so awkward. It's going to take time for him to evolve into a man that can thrive in this type of life. That sort of transition can't happen overnight. But we can get there. At least by the end of the 2nd season, maybe season 3. I mean only a complete idiot would cancel a show this good before it's time.

Such a wonderful compliment for this show that it made you rethink and question your thoughts on a topic, in this case heroism.
