Firefly | Episode 8: Out of Gas | Full Reaction

I wasn't ready for this one. Coming out of Jaynestown I was expecting more laughs and funny glares from Kaylee over a clay Jayne statue and maybe even some googly eyes towards Simon. But instead, this episode hit me like a ton of bricks. Watching Mal fight to keep his family and ship alive, even as everything crumbles around him, was both heartbreaking and truly inspiring. This episode reminded me how much strength we can find in the people and places we call home.. Even when the odds are against us. This wasn't just any episode; This was a testament to the soul of Firefly.

Oh man I own a Drake Vulture in SC! I also have a Cutter and a Hull A. You reference Star Citizen a lot but I don't see any SC content on your channel. Do you ever stream the game? I can't play it right now due to hardware issues. (I basically have to build a whole new PC if I want to play it)

Hey I just described to see you watch this and I'm in for the ride! But as a serious Browncoat, please, it is never "The Serenity" it is just "Serenity"

Robin Holmes

I think the best shows at are about family at the core family, home & love. Something we all want & understand & this shows most attractive facet. The last scenes: Mal making sure they'll, his family are home & will be there and that look he gives Serenity at the end, love at 1st sigh & everything it brings: freedom, Peace, purpose, most of all Home & family. "Everybody dies alone." When I tell you how hard that line wrecked my teenage brain the first time I heard it... I was not ready for the levels this show was operating at haha. Shepherd Book reassuring Mal that they'll be there when he wakes up is one of those media moments that can make me cry on command. Sometimes I imagine that heaven is a place where we'll have unlimited new episodes of Firefly, and I hear Ron Glass's voice telling me that they'll "be there" when the time comes. Wouldn't that be nice? This episode is many Browncoat's favorite episode, and for good reason. Personally, my favorite is the next one, but you really can't go wrong!

Dude Longcouch

One of my favourite episodes. The way they transitioned back and forth was really well done. Was nice to get some back story on how the crew all came together even if it was only brief snippets. 🙂

So very true! Jayne's arc has to be one of my personal favorites. I went from hating him, to rolling my eyes constantly at him, to sighing whenever he was on screen, to laughing whenever he was on screen, to now just understanding him and accepting him for who he is. Which is actually a super genuine, don't give no craps, my way or the highway kinda guy! He's grown on me so much. And he loves the crew. In his own special, Jayne way 🤎

Kali Wali

Right!? I mean coming right out of Jaynestown they are gonna do this to us?? 😭😮‍💨 This episode was such a beautiful exploration of survival and purpose. Every character's past and motivations added so much depth! I love how it really makes you reflect on what matters to each of them. I even see Jayne differently again lol. And yesss, the way it was filmed was done so well! Sometimes I don't like when shows or movies do the past, present, future unfolding but this was done so well that I loved it! So true that back in episode 1, I never could have imagined being this invested in the doctor, Book, and River! But wow here we are, seeing them all in a completely different lens. This show is soooo good!

Kali Wali

Oh man I have Peacock with commercials right now and Netflix. It's definitely sucky and probably even worse for syncing! I'm glad you're loving these tho! And GotG2 is coming in a couple hours! 😭😮‍💨💛

Kali Wali

I wasn't sure if that was the exact part by name lol, but I did remember Kaylee harping on a certain ship part that needed some replacing! And poor Kaylee beat herself up so hard over it, when she didn't neglect it.. It was simply just a Newton's Law situation. But the way Mal came in to help her get her head back on straight was so beautiful to see. I'll be bringing tissues from now on to everything! Somehow they keep randomly disappearing from my desk (* looks at family *) so I'll be chaining them there, so I won't be forgetting them again haha

Kali Wali

Oh man, this one definitely was an emotional rollercoaster from the very first scene until the final one. I haven't seen Arrow, but that's awesome! And same for Lost! It's on my radar for sure since I've heard many recommend it to me lately. And flashback transitions (when done right) can add so much to a show! Simon and Kaylee's relationship is so refreshing and pure. They're so sweet together and I can't wait to see where it goes in the remaining episodes. It's so heartbreaking that this season never got it's full run... But that just makes you cherish every moment even more!

Kali Wali

I totally get why this episode is a favorite. It balances the story, emotions, and backstory incredibly well! And yess the use of filters- it adds such a subtle but powerful layer to the storytelling. The shifts in tone between past, present, and future felt absolutely seamless which honestly amazed me. Sometimes when shows or movies try to do this, I get lost or confused and it takes a moment to understand what's really going on. But this was definitely a testament to the creativity and care that went into its making.

Kali Wali

LOL Kaylee's introduction took me by complete surprise. I totally set myself up for that one, didn't I haha. I'm also very quickly learning to just have tissues on my desk, always. The one day I'm not mindful of them being there (this episode & Forrest Gump & I'm sure a few others) is the day I need them the most. I'm thinking about putting one of those chains on my tissue box like the libraries do for pens LOL

Kali Wali

Let me know which one is your favorite when it comes up! I'm obviously still deciding but I have a few on my list so far hehe

Kali Wali

This is not my personal favourite episode, that's still coming up (soon)! 👀 But yeah, this is an awesome episode.

Onno Smits

Knowing what was coming this episode, I had such a nice laugh in the opening when you said you resonated the most with Kaylee. lol And I would echo those that say to always have tissues when watching Firefly. You won't need them EVERY episode, but you could need them ANY episode. :)

Michael Kemmet

I've watched this series countless times and love every episode but this is definitely my favorite for a few reasons. I love the story, the emotion, but also because of the origin story as well as the way the show was shot. This was a tv show so they didn't have a lot of money but by using a yellow filter to highlight the (warm kinda fun)past, a blue filter to show the (dark, cold, chilling) future, and then no filter to show the "present" line of the story, it's just such a creative way to tell this kind of story in my opinion.

MattN

This was such an emotional episode. I was really worried about the crew, but I'm glad they all got stronger from this. I've been watching DC comics movies lately, and found out Sean Maher(Simon) and Summer Glau(River) were both on Arrow at different times. These characters were much more interesting than their Arrow characters, but they are really good actors. My favorite part of this series so far is Simon and Kaylee's relationship. I know this show ends prematurely, but I hope this grows a lot more in the next episodes. Absolutely loving your reactions Kali. Looking forward to more content. I also want to take this moment to highlight the flashback transitions were amazing. The only show that did that better imo was LOST, which I would highly recommend Kali. It is my all time favorite show.

Paul Wright

Yes!!! You are so smart! You recalled that Kaylee was asking for a catalyzer in the first episode. Sorry about not warning you about the need for tissues…but spoilers avoidance reasons. However this show will make you feel many things.

Eric H

I love this show, my only issue is I don't have Hulu without commercials so it takes a bit of work to keep synced up at times. Still, you're doing great! Looking forward to GotG2. On a completely different topic....go KC Chiefs!!

Lastboyscout73

Just when we think we've got this show figured out and know what to expect, they go and throw this one at us haha. A story of survival, sure, but one with so much extra meaning behind it given the past of each crew member. I LOVE the way this was filmed, contrasting the beginning of the journey, with (what could have been) the end of it. Really getting to see what gives meaning to all of their lives, and what they're willing to die for Who would have thought back in episode 1, when we're picking up a random doctor, and a Sheppard, and girl in a box, that we would have ended up here, so attached to each and every one of them

M1 Maz

Shiny!

Scott S

A lot of negative things can be said about Jayne, but the moment the crisis began he never complained and immediately jumped into action to help in any way he could. And it wasn't just from self preservation.

Matthew

Technically, it was the catalyzer for the compression coil but they go hand in hand apparently. And no matter what you may expect, I recommend tissues be a standard setup at your desk. Even great comedies throw in some heart wrenching here and there. 🙂

This was so beautifully written. Thank you so much for sharing this! I'm sure that when I get to episode 14, I will hate it. I already kind of do. 🤎

Kali Wali

I saw a clip of an interview Alan Tudyk (Wash) gave recently when he was asked why Firefly still resonates today. His answer was as simple as it was true. "It's the best tv show ever made." Well, I guess that settles that. Is it the best episode of the series? I believe every episode can be the best episode depending on how you view it. My personal favorite happens to be episode 14. You'll hate it. We all do at first. Not because it's a bad episode. But because it's the last. Because, like the man said, this is the best tv show ever made.

Aaron Chandler

Don't worry, this one is a high point, but you have more greatness to come. And then the movie stands above any one episode, at least in my opinion, and you get to watch that last! I took it that the only thing Zoe didn't like about Wash at first was only the moustache, with it being the only thing noticeably (that I noticed, anyway) different about younger Wash. I figure the rest of him was, to her, at least malleable 😅 Anyway, I'm doing this from memory, I still need to actually watch your reaction. So, I'll just go do that 😄

Squeesher

I have to agree even though I haven't seen the rest of the series yet! The transitions had me sweating from the beginning! They were extremely well done & kept you on the edge of your seat every time. Then the crew flashbacks & how Jayne, Kaylee, & Wash came to be.. Even a deeper dive into Wash and Zoe's amazing relationship! I love that she seriously hated him so much in the beginning haha. It makes their relationship make so much more sense & add beauty to an already beautiful thing 😭✨

Kali Wali

I was wondering if that was the same compressor Kaylee was mentioning way back when! Love that.. This episode was so great! Just when I thought I couldn't love the crew and ship more 🩷

Kali Wali

You'll hear from almost anyone that this is the best episode of the series, and I think that's probably right. Powerful transitions, important flashbacks, strengthening of the "family" bonds, this one is packed with lore.

Squeesher

One of my favorite episodes. Love the time jumps to learn backstories. And I appreciate the show paying things off like the compressor mentioned in episode 1 and again later in the run.
