Firefly | Episode 11: Trash | Full Reaction

A huge thank you to everyone who helped me go into this episode completely spoiler-free and even timed the "previously on" scene so I could cover my eyes and count down lol.

This episode hit... differently but had those same themes of trust, regret, and the weight of past choices. Watching everything unfold the way it did felt like a mix of admiration and frustration. Kinda like seeing an old friend make a familiar mistake and wanting to scream, "No! Remember last time??". It was sharp, and a little painful, but so brilliant. The way it played with expectations left me equal parts impressed and unsettled.

Firefly | Episode 11: Trash | Full Reaction

They cancelled the show because Warner Bros stuck to their image as Hollywood's dumbest company and showed the series out of order when it first aired so nothing made sense. The premiere episode "Serenity" was the finale when it first aired.

"She's a liar. She's a liar, and no good will come of her. Jayne is a girl's name..." I've always loved that line, and the meaning behind it 😁

Stuart Brewster

If I ever get a white arabian in RDR2 I'm gonna name it Yosafbridge.

I think Saffron mixes truth with lies. COMIC BOOK SPOILER !!! In the comics it showed that she actually trained as a companion before going on her crime spree, which explains how she knows how to manipulate people so easily.

In my opinion, the best of GOT is behind you at that point; there are good parts ahead, but also some truly horrible parts as well (in terms of writing and content). It's likely much more palatable if you haven't read the books. I think it would probably be an entertaining reaction, the question is whether you would want to commit to the filming and editing or just watch on your own!

Chris Truex

I do the same! "Shiny" and "Not so much" have both become a standard part of my lexicon, along with a few other choice quotes from the show. Enjoy your rewatches!

Dude Longcouch

Absolutely! Mal just can't let a challenge go, especially when it's personal lol. I think you're spot on about it tying back to the war! Losing so much and having no way to fight back must have left him with a deep burning to prove he's still got control over something, anything. And with Saffron? You know he wasn't about to let her have the last laugh 🤣 I'm sad I ever even doubted him for a second lol Inara's moment was sooo satisfying! She's so sharp and witty and capable, but we really don't get to see that side of her very often. The way she just effortlessly outplayed Saffron? So great. You put the Simon and Jayne scene soo well. Simon's strength isn't violence, but in conviction. The fact that he doesn't just hold Jayne accountable but he actually chooses to trust him is so powerful! It's an awesome contrast from when Jayne had the upper hand, and now Simon is the one standing firmly! I also love that you see yourself in Simon!! He has so many great qualities and he has quickly grown as a favorite of mine on this show!

I suppose it was only a matter of time before I started talking like a Browncoat 🤣😂 I find myself throughout the day saying quotes from this show already hahaha. I truly agree that this one has a great rewatchability to it! And now I really need to go back and watch that Kaylee moment again. AND you can actually see Saffron taking the gun??? I usually go back to rewatch the two episodes I watched earlier in the week over the weekend so this one will be an absolutely amazing one to rewatch!

Kali Wali

Glad you're able to sync more easily! Someone mentioned before that they didn't have the "previously on" segment either and it made me realize that it's prob super difficult for y'all to sync to me with that missing haha. So, I'm glad it's easier now! I also feel you on the "next time on" segments! Sometimes they're helpful and have a place, but other times they're basically just a flashing neon sign saying "This is happening in this episode!" And yeah, after seeing the intro for Trash while editing this one for you all, It definitely would have softened the impact of the reveal! Having a designated "TV Shut Off" person is genius hahaha. And I also love that you had Game of Thrones watch parties! Respect 🤣✨ I only made it up to season 3 of Game of Thrones. So, I'm not sure if I should ever do a reaction here or just finish it on my own time. River's "I can kill you with my brain" line seriously got me hahahha. I see now it's played for laughs, but given what we know about her, it's that funny kind of laugh where you immediately stop and think, "wait... should i be concerned??" 😭

Kali Wali

LOL I always wonder in scenes where the actor is 'naked' what is actually going on on set 😭 But this rumor, if true, is absolutely hilarious haha.

Kali Wali

Yes! Very accurate. Her psychotic behavior makes her both insanely easy to hate but also so interesting haha

Kali Wali

"I've seen you w/o your clothes on, but I never thought I'd see you naked." Such a wonderful line. I think Mal did read her right, she did care & want to love Durren and didn't go back to fleece him.. until she was hard up. She did bad but as Mal said, she'll soon get over it. And when the moment caused Mal to let her gaurd down, just like with Durran her psychotic Brian switch to take advantage and...

Mike

"I shaved off my BEARD for you DEVIL WOMAN!!!" "Also, I can kill you with my brain." *River says as she slips away coyly* I'm fairly sure I've heard from some interview that when Mal was walking into Serenity right at the end, Nathan Fillion had a sock on his *ahem* which had a picture of Joss Whedon's face on it. It helped increase the awkwardness for the other crew to help them portray that for their final lines of the episode

Squeesher

I love how you've done the double sync thing. My copy is ripped from the DVD set I got back when the show had just been canceled, and doesn't have last-time-ons. I just sucked it up, most people sync using streaming service so it's no biggie, but I really appreciate the effort you made here! As to last-time-ons, I don't mind it sometimes, but it sometimes primes you and undermines surprises (like this one would have). "Hey remember that detail? Better remember that detail! Be ready for the reveal! That we just telegraphed!" (Avatar: The Last Airbender has one in particular that drives me nuts, where they basically spoil the reveal of a major character in this way) That said, I DEFINITELY understand when it's a longer show, like you talked about, when it's more about pulling old storylines, etc. And most of the time, it really doesn't spoil, truthfully. But "next time on" is devilry, and should be avoided at all cost. If I like your show, I'll watch the next episode and all you will have done is spoil stuff. If I don't, "next time on" will mean nothing, because I won't be watching regardless. Back when my friends were watching Game of Thrones as it came out, we had a designated "TV Shut Off" person to cut off the "next time on", while the rest of us would cover our eyes and talk loudly until it was dealt with. Oh, and I loved your reaction to River's "I can kill you with my brain" line... It's played as a joke, but you're like... wait no, really, can she? You're basically in Jayne's head right there. And... it's not a crazy question, given what's happened so far!

Chris Truex

Ahh, interesting haha!

Kali Wali

LOL 🤣🤣😭

Kali Wali

"Small 'verse, to run into Saffron like that." You're already talking like a Browncoat, and I love it :p Rewatching this one is always fun, because with the knowledge that they were putting on an act to fool Saffron, there are subtle little details in the actor's performances that you can now pick up on. Actors, playing regular people, trying to act convincingly, even though they're not actors. Must have been a fun day at work! Actually, we know they were having fun. When Wash says "What's she doing on the ship!?" and Kaylee cracks up laughing, that was a genuine break from Jewel Staite. She just couldn't hold back laughter because Alan Tudyk is hilarious. I guess they left it in because it's funny, and it still makes sense that Kaylee would laugh at Wash in that moment. Next time you watch Mal and YoSaffBridge's "Heart to heart" scene in the shuttle, keep your eye on YoSaffBridge as Mal sits down next to her. If you watch closely, you can actually see her take Mal's pistol and then pass it to her other hand behind her back. It's subtle, but it's there. My favorite little detail from this episode, I think.

Dude Longcouch

I feel like Mal is never one to shy away from a challenge, that allows him to prove himself over another. Maybe it goes back to how the war went for him. But when he saw Saffron he just had to take her on again after she bested him the last time haha I love the scene with Inara capturing Safron. I feel like we haven't had too many badass-Inara scenes and that was definitely an awesome one! I had forgotten which episode had Simon confronting Jayne in the med-bay, and had been really waiting to see that scene again, with how much I like it! It's funny coming from last week's YT episode where Jayne is walking all over Simon, to now Simon owning Jayne, multiple times. But he owned him not with fear or intimidation, but with mercy? And reason, and trust I want to say. Which makes that scene all the more powerful. I see so much of myself in Simon's character - his past, his sister, his mannerisms, and I love him all the more for it haha

Don't worry too much about the tattoo. It's a Nathan Fillion tattoo, not a Malcom Reynolds tattoo. ;) According to the internet, it's an Egyptian glyph meaning peace that Fillion got when he was 19.

Michael Kemmet

Wish I could have said, "Don't start watching until you see Mal naked!" as my previously-on, spoiler-avoidance advice :) The surprised look on your open-mouthed face when you first saw Yo-Saff-Brig/Mrs. Reynolds was such a treat.

I feel this! After watching the intro while I was editing this patreon watch for you all, I totally get why people say to avoid it. The shock and tension hit so much better when you don't know what to expect because of the 'previously on'. You are also so right about the rewatch value! I loved my first watch of this, of course. But knowing what I know now makes a rewatch of this hit in an entirely new way 👀 Incredible writing! I feel like every episode I've rewatched has had me feeling this way. Once you know what's coming, you start catching all the those subtle looks, shifts, and unspoken moments. The actors really did such a phenomenal job with the amount of storytelling just in their expressions! And that scene with Jayne, Simon, and River? Pure gold. Okay so honestly, I left feeling he same exact way hahaha. Once I knew the crew was in on it all along, Wash's "Wait a minute, why is she even here!?" had me dying just remembering it lol. And your point about Inara waiting behind the door for a dramatic entrance has me cracking up. Now I wish we had another episode just showing the behind the scenes set-up they all did just to trick YolandaSaffron haha. I love that you brought this up because I totally was thinking the same thing after ending this one.

Kali Wali

LOL this one had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. But the ending... Never saw that coming! Once again makes a rewatch of this episode with fresh eyes hit so differently 😭😂

Kali Wali

This is why I don't like to watch previously on's or next time on's. It's nice to be surprised sometimes. If you execute your show well, you don't need them. This surprise is also the reason why I love watching this show with someone watching for the first time. You only get to be surprised once. But the rewatch, with this knowledge, is a lot of fun too. These actors are great. I don't think this show gets enough credit for the nuance the actors bring with their body language and facial expressions. So much of the story is told with their eyes. Like the scene with Jayne, Simon, and River when Simon brings up the bounty. Jayne gets a little shifty and River picks up on it and responds with a look that basically indicates that she picked up on his fear of being found out. All throughout the series there's tons of those looks in different situations which makes rewatches so enjoyable as they are harder to pick up on on a first time watch. Something I think about often when I watch this episode is how Mal told the crew that he had YoSafBridge in that crate. Did he gather them all in the dining room and was like "you'll never guess the extra cargo I picked up from Monty." What was the conversation like when they planned out the roles that they were going to play? Did they rehearse? "Ok, I'm going to bring her into the dining room to introduce the job to the crew. Wash, you're the funny one, so you should be the one to ask how she got on the ship. Because that's funny. And Inara, wait just outside in the hall and wait for the perfect time to make a dramatic entrance warning us not to trust her." Why do I think about that so much?

Aaron Chandler

Kali, this is another episode where I can't wait to watch your face at certain plot points! 😆
