The Shawshank Redemption | Full Reaction

This film was another awakening! From the very beginning, I could just feel the crushing weight of injustice, the slow leaking of time, and the quiet suffering that comes from being trapped within a prison. Shawshank was such an amazing symbol of life's cages, the ones that are built by regret, or expectations, or circumstances. But still, Andy saw something so much brighter than confinement. He absolutely refused to surrender to its darkness.

But it wasn't just Andy's redemption that stood out to me in this movie. It was also the amazing reminder that hope, no matter how fragile or dangerous, is the one thing that can never truly be imprisoned. And that's what I'll be taking away the most from this film. That even the darkest nights eventually give way to new dawn.

So I know it’s probably never gonna happen cause it’s too scary BUT I would love it if you someday watched The Shining. It’s my favorite Stephen King movie. This is Tim Robbins (Andy) best and most famous movie for sure. He was perfect for Andy Dufresne. I think this is my favorite Morgan Freeman role. The prosecutor dude at the beginning has been in almost every project Frank Darabont has ever done. Imo the best scene in the movie is where Andy plays the record over the P.A. System or the scene where he gets beer for the prison workers.

Russell Rutigliano

Sadly this lost Best Picture to Forrest Gump, but at least that was a respectable lose unlike Saving Private Ryan loosing to Shakespeare In Love. I am sure SIL is a fine movie but Private Ryan is a masterpiece. Oh well, time makes it clear which movies are actually the best. The director Frank Darabont didn't have to worry about losing to Hanks again as his next film The Green Movie would star Hanks.

Andrew Roach

Fair warning it is known to be haunted. They also have paranormal tours that they actually have you sign waivers for. Never did those but I’ve been to the regular tour and it’s perfectly fine. You get to see a lot of locations from the movie.

TheJoeKerr

WHAT! That's awesome I just looked it up and it wouldn't be a bad day trip to take someday!

Kali, I don’t know where you are in Ohio but you can visit the actual building that they filmed the exterior shots and some interior shots for the prison. It’s the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, OH. It’s just a museum now, the prison closed in 1986.

You had mentioned in your intro about the number of great movies that came out around this time. Besides Shawshank, the number of movies that came out in 1994 is unreal. It is considered one of the best years of film releases ever. Just a partial list of movies from 1994, Forrest Gump Lion King Leon Clerks Dumb and Dumber Ace Ventura Hudsucker Proxy (starring Tim Robbins) Speed The Santa Clause

That picture of a young red was actually Morgan Freeman son

One thing u can count on in a Steven King film ...alot of his films take place in his home state of Maine lol

I worked at a Level 6 prison facility before so I know firsthand how a place like this can break a person down more than it builds them up. Anyways, this was a good watch. I like how Red told Andy that Zihuatanejo was a "shitty pipe dream", unbeknownst to him that Andy would crawl through a shitty pipe (and come out clean on the otherside) to get to his dream, and I love that Red would be a part of that dream. I also liked the look on the Warden's face when he opened the Bible and saw the cut out of the rock hammer next to the book of Exodus. This was such a good story. Steven King is such a brilliant writer. And I enjoyed this reaction video. I'm looking forward to the next one!

One of the things I love about a lot of older movies, this one being no exception, is that their pacing allows for us to breathe and slowly take everything in. It isn't just bang, bang, bang one thing after another. We have some long deep, meaningful conversations, and slow cuts, that makes us even more attached to these characters. Making the sad moments even more depressing, and the happy ones even more joyous I love that even beyond just the concept of hope, one of the things you touched on in your outro was not letting our circumstances define us. That no matter the present situation, there can always be a way out if we believe and fully commit ourselves to it. Andy had a plan, and he never wavered from it, despite the world giving him every opportunity to. I also think one of the most powerful parts of this movie, was that not only did Andy's outlook save himself, it saved Red too This movie also highlighted a dark side of humanity where someone's worth to another is often solely based on what value they can provide to them. But Andy also knew this, and was so good at reading people. He knew he had skills and used that to get in with Hadley the guard, and the Warden, to ultimately facilitate his escape. It makes for an amazing experience re-watching this movie and picking up on those things! After a very busy day of work, there was no better way to relax on a Friday night than to watch this deep, meaningful movie with you :) So thank you for the amazing reaction and all that you do!!

1000% agree! I loved his narration throughout the movie so much.

Yesss. That balance between darkness and hope is what makes this movie so powerful. It doesn't shy away from showing the harsh realities. And when the moments of light shine through, they shine sooo much brighter. I loved that so much about this one. Hope really is the best of things. :)

Kali Wali

Oo haven't heard of that one yet, I need to check it out!

Kali Wali

I can 10000% see why! This movie is so deep and beautiful! Thank you :)

I couldn't agree more. Shawshank truly shows the humanity of people behind bars and the deep flaws within the system that keep so many trapped, even after they've served their time. We absolutely could do more to create real rehabilitation and second chances.. This movie was an incredible experience to both watch and reflect on. The Matrix is coming soon, but I'm glad I jumped into this one too!

Kali Wali

Morgan Freeman with that voice of his is just incapable of saying anything that doesn't sound like God's honest truth etched in stone.

JD Nevesytrof

this one has maybe my favorite ending ever...for however dark and depressing this movie is, the moments of hope and happiness are just so bright. and the end....i cannot think of a better or happier end to the story. hope really is the best of things

Cregg Riley

Do agree, there are some really great films from the 90's, both Shawshank and Green Mile. Another film that is considered 'Perfect' came out at this time too is another Stephen King adaptation, Misery.

This is the number #1 movie of ALL TIME!!! Nothing beats it!!! Awesome cinematography! Impeccable acting! Immaculate directing! Flawless writing and storytelling! I absolutely loved this movie!!!! Kali, BEAUTIFUL FREAKIN REACTION!!!!

Jonathan

This one of those movies that I hope changes people's minds about prison and justice reforms. We could do so much to carve paths for growth and rehabilitation and to break the cycle for people who struggle in the world, in no small part because of how we treat those who have completed their sentences. Loved getting to see this one, thank you for picking it before The Matrix, though I'm excited for that one too!

Chris Chatham

Thank you so much!!!

Kali Wali

I hope you enjoy!! Happy Friday :)

Kali Wali

100% agree! The slow-burn pacing is what makes it so powerful. It doesn't rush to tell its story. And the gradual unfolding of Andy's journey is what made the rain scene payoff feel so earned. But yes, Andy giving hope to a man that had spent 40 years in a prison was the true beauty in all of this.. Very special movie for sure!

Kali Wali

Awww, Redemption!? Yessss same! 💚🐴

Kali Wali

I hope you enjoy it! It was such an amazing and beautiful movie!!

I'm on this the second I get home!

Andy's unwavering grasp of hope combined with such a rare mastery of patience (pressure & time) makes this movie stand out. But the power of platonic love he nurtured in his friendship with Red and helping him rekindle his own hope, is what makes this film special.

KJ Gould

That word Kali, makes me think of poor Arthur again 🥹

Lets goooo! This is one of my fav movies, cant wait to watch.
