Black Panther | Full Reaction

This film felt like so much more than just a superhero movie. The entire thing was such a powerful and deeply moving experience. The visuals were SO good- the technology, the culture, Wakanda! Once again, Phase 3 transported me to an entirely new place that felt truly legendary.

T'Challa's journey as a leader, the strength and grace of the Dora Milaje, and Killmonger's heartbreaking story all hit me in ways I didn't ever expect. The super constant and beautifully executed themes of heritage, identity, and responsibility felt so real. And Chadwich Boseman's presence was nothing short of breathtaking. This movie was a pure celebration of culture, legacy, and what it means to be a hero in every sense of the word.

I think they had the right idea in a lot of places, with the vibrant ethereal purples in the ancestral plane, and the one shot of the camera doing the 180⁰ turn right side up as killmonger takes the throne. There were hints of an incredible narrative to be shown, and boseman in particular i feel really embodies the beatiful potential this film had, but ultimately doesn't live up to in all the ways that something like my favorite franchise ever at this point (god of war) does. The hype around this movie was absolutely insane and maybe they were a bit held back by the fact that its an MCU film. With all that being said tho this movie is cool as hell and ill always like it.

Justyn

Thank you so much for your reply. There are a good bit of MCU shows most of the shows that have come out in the last few years directly takes place after the next few movies whereas Agents of Shield and Daredevil take place right after the very first Avengers film. As I said AOS connects and follows the events of those movies while expanding on a particular storyline but gradually develops into its own storylines and arcs. Daredevil is its own original story and characters they may reference the Avengers one or two times but that’s it. It would be an absolute pleasure to have you get into these two series. Agents of Shield is my personal favorite and is just one of my favorite tv shows period and Daredevil is arguably one of the best live action comic book adaptation Tv shows of all time. Can’t wait!

Justin Garlington

You're so right! I think watching LoTR in between these movies completely cancelled out his character for me lol. All I see is Gollum now! Thank you for the reminder!

Kali Wali

Chadwick Boseman brought so much life and love into his character here and it really shows. I'm glad that you still found some joy watching this even if it wasn't your favorite! As a reactor, that means a lot that even tho this isn't a great film to you, you still decided to watch it alongside me! Thank you so much!! I'm excited for Infinity War.. But I don't think I am prepared at all. See you there!

Kali Wali

Not a bad idea at all to expand it to a Top 10 as we go into Avengers Infinity War. A, because it'll make it so much easier on my heart to pick lol. And B, because Phase 3 really just started pumping all the amazing characters out! I totally loved the soundtrack, costumes, and production of this one! The way the bass just hits randomly to make dialogue feel more impactful- yesssss. It had me wishing I was watching this in the theatres! See you in Infinity War!! 👀

Kali Wali

I completely get what you're saying about the writing! I went back to rewatch this one already because I loved the soundtrack and kept it on while I got some emails/youtube stuff done. It's interesting on a rewatch how certain things start to stand out more! You definitely have valid points, too! I agree the uncut shots, like in the casino, were awesome directorial choices! The cinematography definitely stood out to me in this. But yeah, some of the CGI could have been better and spent more time on. It would have taken it from great to WOW. I can see now how on rewatches that it's hard not to spot this during repeated viewings! I can't agree more about Andy Serkis! He was such a chaos character in this but I absolutely loved every second of it lol. It brought a crazy life and energy into the film that I really enjoyed! Rather than just hating on the villain bc they suck and they're evil. He had me laughing lol. And yes, RIP Chadwick Boseman. He bought so much life and love into his character and it really, really shows!

Kali Wali

eeee see you in Infinity War! 👀

Kali Wali

Yes! I put together the Ross situation very late lol. The "Dora" also clicked once the battle started! I completely agree with you about Killmonger. His motivations aren't purely evil. They are born from real pain, loss, and injustice. And it does make his story so much more powerful! I love the moral complexity that he adds to this entire movie. He's definitely up there on my top Villain list.. Actually, he is probably #1 right now for sure! A real-life Wakanda would be so amazing. It's a very hopeful vision for what could be... if the world was more like that :)

Kali Wali

Black Panther totally stands apart because it doesn't just bring entertainment but also educates! I 100% agree. The political and social themes are super relevant, and I appreciate that the film doesn't shy away from the tougher issues. Even though these themes are uncomfortable, they are meant to be! These are real issues that need to be talked about more. And you're right, MCU has always been political in its own way, so it was very refreshing to see Black Panther just take it head-on. Killmonger was a great villain. His methods are very extreme, but his pain and anger are rooted and justified in something very real. And yes, that speech to the UN was one of the most powerful moments of the film! It really left me speechless and made the movie feel so relevant in today's world. See you in Infinity War!!

Kali Wali

I love everything you said here! You're so right that this movie doesn't have a 'true' villain in the traditional sense. It was all about moral dilemmas, perspectives, and the hard truths that shaped each character's choices. It made the conflicts so powerful, and it wasn't ever just good vs. evil but a real exploration of legacy, pain, and responsibility! I also love that T'Challa shot up your rankings like that!! I couldn't pick at Top 5 in the beginning or end of this because my Top 5 has gotten so complicated.. But I'm excited to share it with everyone moving into Avengers Infinity War! T'Challa is such a well-written character! Strong, wise, and constantly evolving. And honestly anyone that can rub shoulders with Rocket?? That's high praise lol Andy Serkis was hilarious in this movie. I totally forgot we saw him back in Ultron! I think watching LoTR after that really messed him up in my mind and I forgot he was ever in a Marvel movie haha. I totally saw all of the Smeagol energy in this movie though! He had me cracking up the entire time which is awesome for a 'villain' and such a better feeling than just pure hatred lol. He was chaotic in the best ways. The music and bass in this had me wishing I was listening to this with surround sound!! The fusion of traditional African sounds with modern beats was so genius and it really drove home that Wakanda is a place of deep-rooted culture but also amazing technology! I loved the constant music playing in Shuri's lab. She was also a really amazing character that I loved for many reasons haha. Actually come to think of it... I loved the entire cast in this. Every single one of them! Ross doing the salute was such a subtle moment with sooo much meaning in it. It was definitely a huge sign of respect, and he definitely became part of the fight with them rather than just being an outsider helping out. I love that so much! See you in Infinity War next!!

Kali Wali

RIP Chadwick Boseman.. Truly a legend. It's incredible to think about the strength and dedication he brought to film every single day while going through everything he went through.. It shows in every scene. I completely agree about Killmonger! He's probably my number one villain right now just ahead of Zemo. His pain was so deeply rooted and even though his actions were so harsh and extreme, I can totally understand why he became who he was... See you in Infinity War! I can't believe we are already here...

Kali Wali

LOL stopppp

Kali Wali

Thank you! I agree that this movie had so much power in it! And I totally get why Killmonger ranks so high for you. His death scene hit me so unexpectedly. One of the most powerful villain send-offs I've ever seen. But now you have me curious. Who is your number 1 Villain!? I know I'm about to find out, but the fact that I keep getting this tissue warning is not reassuring going into another Avengers film lol. I ran out for this film, but I'll be sure to be bringing a whole new fresh box into the next one! See you there!

Kali Wali

The impact Black Panther had, especially for people of color, is something very special. And Chadwick Boseman's dedication to this role, even while battling such an intense illness, makes his performance mean so much more. I remember hearing about Chadwick Boseman through the media and thinking that was super sad. But now watching him in this film.. In this role.. I get why his loss was so devastating. I had a feeling the intro was a way to honor him.. He was truly a man that gave everything to bring this character to life and it shows. Killmonger was something else. The raw intensity in him made him one of the more compelling villains in MCU, hands down. His pain felt so deep and real, and the fact that his core argument wasn't just "evil for the sake of evil" but actually had so much truth behind it made his story all the more tragic. It's wild to think how much that role affected MBJ in real life, too.. Shows how much he truly poured into it and why it felt so real for the audience.. Wow The way everyone has been hyping Infinity War has me soooo nervous haha. I'm excited, too! But wow I'm also scared LOL. See you there!

Kali Wali

I'm the comics, Ulysses Klaw (Andy Serkis) was kinda like Black Panther's arch-nemesis. He's the one who killed T'Challa's father and T'Challa cut off his arm in revenge. Then Klaue replaced his arm with the sonic cannon and that started their rivalry. While it's sad that Andy Serkis will no longer be in the MCU with his limited time as the character, they made up for it with Killmonger. Black Panther was the first Black superhero in comics created by Stan Lee for black kids living through the Civil Right Movement. I like that they decided to make this movie more about tackling social issues rather than another superhero movie. They focused the story on being about 2 cousins; one who was raised in an isolated world with royalty, and the other raised on the outside world with poverty. Seeing both their sides based on their environment and both making good points. The fact that T'Challa decides to reveal Wakanda to the world and make Killmonger's apartment into a center to help black people shows that Killmonger wasn't really a villain. Killmonger, and Nakia to an extent, got what they wanted in the end to have Wakanda help the world. Killmonger won but he didn't win as a villain, he won as a victim and was able to convince T'Challa the be a hero to help all people everywhere, not just his own people within his country. With how divided the world is today, people would like to have less politics in their entertainment. But with how big Black Panther is and his significance in both comics and the Black community, I mean you can't really ignore that.

ChrisAm13

Omg that sounds like an awesome experience! With the way the music and bass were blaring throughout the entire movie, I bet it was an AMAZING experience in theatres with this one. And Black Panther definitely sparks a lot of deeper conversations, and I love that it got people thinking beyond just the action and superhero moments! It's awesome how a movie can reveal so much about people's perspectives and values. I'm so sad to hear about Chadwich Boseman. His impact will always be legendary. I remember hearing about his death as it was happening, and it was so sad to hear. I'll see you in Avengers Infinity War! (I'm not prepared lol)

Kali Wali

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed this one! I haven't seen Daredevil of Agents of Shield yet, but I've definitely heard they are great! I love the idea of Agents of Shield tying into the earlier movies before branching into its own thing. As for Daredevil, I don't know too much about it but I heard it has great action and storytelling in it so I'm in haha. I'll definitely be jumping into the MCU shows soon and I'm really excited to get started in most of them!

Kali Wali

Woah, good catch that I totally blanked on for some reason! Maybe Andy Serkis in LoTR just completely consumed my brain lol. But you're totally right. Ultron rips his arm off, then he gets a vibranium upgrade!

Kali Wali

You should know me by now- I love insightful conversation haha. You honestly put it beautifully. Wakanda's utopia isn't just about technology but about what could have been without the deep scars of colonization. The film definitely does not shy away from that history, and it makes the internal conflict so much more powerful! The tension between staying hidden or revealing their way of life and the moral responsibility to help those torn from their homelands is what makes this story so great. I agree, the outreach at the end is such a hopeful step forward toward healing rather than straight vengeance. Thank you for sharing!

Kali Wali

Malcolm Ferguson

RIP Chadwick Boseman. Cant tell enough how much i respect him. Happy you liked it. Even if i think its one of the worst MCU Movies in P1-3 it was nice to watch it with you. I spare you my thoughts about the movie. Luckily it gets better with the next one. Take care Kali.

Curaitis

Awesome reaction! Your emotional responses and smart insights really elevated this rewatch for me. I don't really like the overall story in this one, but the production design is incredible. The costumes, the sets, the sound design and soundtrack... Great stuff! And the villain is very compelling, as you experienced yourself. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed you'll expand to a top 10 for the intro of Infinity War! 🤞

Onno Smits

I saw this movie when it was in theaters and absolutely loved it. I watched it again maybe 4 years ago and remember not liking it as much. For my 3rd time watching, i can say that there are lots of things i like a lot, and a few things i...think could have been a lot better. First of all the narrative, and the characterization of both t'challa and killmonger is superb but that probably goes without saying. One thing i also never realized is how many long uncut shots there are in this movie, the one in the casino in particular stood out to me. Some pretty cool camera work and setpieces all throughout the film. Most of the places and scenes look good. But unfortunately the actual writing of this feels very uninspiring. The performances are all great and i think it masks that the actual lines they are delivering arent very good a lot of the time. A lot of things feel very told instead of shown and lots of the events feel a bit cliché and predictable. I dont think it takes away from the movie overall too much, but it is hard not to notice on a 3rd watch. Also the cgi looks...flat out terrible in my opinion in the action scenes with the suit and the other vibranium weapons. But overall i still really like this movie! Great reaction as always and happier than ever to be a patron!! 😁😁 And of course rest in peace always the late great Chadwick Boseman. Wakanda forever. Edit: forgot to metion that andy serkis is absolutely phenomenal in this movie.

Justyn

*Deep breath.. we're almost there! great reaction! I can NOT WAIT for the next!!

Mister Lou

Kali, the “Dora” are the Dora Milaje: an all-female group of royal warriors/guards. And Ross was buying the vibranium on behalf of the U.S. government who would love to have it for themselves (the last bits the U.S. had made Captain America’s shield). Really enjoyed your reaction as usual. This movie spotlights how a great “villain” isn’t just their terrible actions but also the culmination of what drove them to do those actions. A story is so much richer when the clarity of whose side and whose methods are “right” isn’t an easy choice. And I definitely wish we had a real-life Wakanda too. 🙂

There are some great movies in phase 3: Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame. But Black Panther is great in a different way than the rest. It's not pure escapism like the rest because it is politically and socially relevant. I have heard some say the themes were a bit heavy-handed at times. So what? It was cool to have an MCU movie with such strong political and social themes. The comics have always been that way. Killmonger is most definitely a villain. His methods are wrong and his motivation is mostly selfish. Revenge has consumed him. I like that they continued the revenge theme from Civil War into this. But he also has a point. He's calling out oppression, racism, slavery, and the hypocrisy of those who do nothing to stop it. So yeah the heaviness is uncomfortable at times. It's supposed to be. Then there's the speech at the UN (mid-credits). I mean does it get any more socially relevant than that? On to Infinity War. One of the best of the whole MCU and my favorite of the multi-main character movies!

Marty McGee

This is such a beautiful movie with so many impactful messages. It's stating the obvious, but there really was not a true villain in this movie. I feel like the true driver of conflict was moral dilemmas. Very real ones, that made it impossible to really pick a side. But growth, and new perspectives is ultimately what prevailed at the end. Really enjoyed your reaction of this one! I had saved an empty throne at my #5 spot for Black Panther going into watching this one, and not only did he take it, but I think he's rubbing shoulders with Rocket now for my #3 spot! There's just so much about his character that I love Andy Serkis! This was literally the first movie I’ve ever seen with him in it outside of the LoTR, and I just can’t *not* see Smeagol in those eyes every time he grins hahaha. He played such a great secondary villain for this movie! “Put some music on” he yells as the car chase starts LOL. My man! Speaking of, the music in this movie is soooo good! One of my favorite elements of this movie in general, that I know you commented a lot on too is the juxtaposition of tradition and culture, with modernity and tech. And the music is one of those things that drove that split home I feel like it's a very small moment, but I LOVE when Ross has to put his arms over his chest in the salute to activate the shockwave on the ship! There's a lot of deeper symbolism there, I feel, but most notably, it's just like he's one of them now

M1 Maz

RIP Chadwick Boseman, such an amazing actor and person. Hard to believe he was already diagnosed with cancer during the shooting of this movie. Killmonger is one of the best MCU villains, although his methods and ideology was misguided, you can really understand why he became the man he was. Michael B. Jordan nailed this role. Such an impressive movie. Wakanda Forever

Lastboyscout73

During the filming of this, Andy Serkis and Martin Freeman were known as the Tolkien White Guys.

Doug Watson

Great reaction as always ~ Black Panther is such a powerful movie, it's one of my top tier movies of the entire MCU, and yes Killmonger's death is one of the most moving villain deaths in all of cinema that I can think of. And honestly, Killmonger is probably my 2nd favorite villain in the entire MCU. You'll be meeting my favorite next week which brings me to: Buy more tissues before Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

The Dingo

This movie was really well talked about when it first released. Having an all black main cast, so many people spoke about African culture and it touched the hearts of so many people of color. One thing that I want to give some context on, is this movies Marvel intro. It was all clips of Tchalla because in 2020, Chadwick Boseman, sadly passed away from a long, secretive battle with colon cancer. And his loss was felt, especially after his incredible performances, here and as you'll see in later movies, he was exceptional. Even in this film, during his fight scenes he actually got very tired during many film days, and his struggles were kept quiet, and no one except Chadwicks close family knew about it until the day he passed. So this intro was altered to honor such a hero, who pushed through his pain and gave his all to a character that people adored seeing brought to the big screen. 🙌 My absolute favorite part of this film, was Killmonger. Michael B. Jordan brought such a visceral, angry, but also broken layer to him. This type of villain really took people by surprise. I mean, having a villain that not only you feel for, but even to shed tears for, and more than that... acknowledging that he actually might be right? You called it, if Tchaka brought Erik home, none of this would've happened. I can't imagine the pain as a child of literally finding your dead father in your house, with nothing but sadness and confusion to fill your heart. It's no wonder that loss just turned him into a vile person. I love that the conclusion of this movie is literally doing what the villain said should be done. Tchalla opening Wakanda and revealing themselves. Not through violence of course, but still, Killmongers base argument was absolutely right. Michael B. Jordan mentioned in interviews that committing as hard as he did with coming into work in this violent, angry mindset, actually took a toll on him. And after they finished filming he needed to see his therapist more often to help him transition out of that head space 😅 Oh man. Infinity War. I am beyond hyped for your reaction to that movie. It's my favorite film in the MCU and I can't wait to talk about why. See you then Kali!

Lorenzo Baxter

This is definitely one of the Marvel movies that I can say I had one of the best movie theater experiences in my entire life. I'm not even someone into politics, but I could not ignore the political conversations this movie started in my community. I learned about a lot of people's moral compasses, and their standpoints on politics. This movie will always be as impactful to me as any other MCU movie. RIP to the legend Chadwick Boseman. WAKANDA FOREVER!!! Thank you so much for another beautiful reaction Kali! I hope you've prepared yourself for what comes next.........🙃

iameNeRG (Rodney Gant)

Great Reaction! Can’t wait for the next one! Somewhat unrelated Also I don’t know if anyone suggested but since you’re more than halfway through the best part of the MCU the shows Daredevil and Marvel Agents of Shield are a good watch. Agents of Shield follows some of the events of the early movies and kind of connects them together, though it does become its own thing. It’s a good watch and a nice lengthy series to get into

Justin Garlington

I'm just pointing out, that when you said his arm looked rubber, he's the same guy who got his arm ripped off by Ultron in the age of Ultron movie when he mentioned Stark to ultron.

Some will not like political takes on this movie, but the story can't be discussed without how history has impacted the continent of Africa. Wakanda is a Utopia not just because of vibranium, but because they were able to remain hidden from the resource pillaging and enslavement by colonisers. It is a sad, uncomfortable truth. Then the melancholy with the realisation they remained hidden and non-interventional for too long while others around the world with African roots suffered in bondage and systemic oppression. But at least at the end being able to offer outreach and development, to uplift in all ways that matter those who have been kept down, will begin to make amends and be above Killmonger's eye-for-an-eye vengeance. Hope you don't mind me rambling!

I loved this one!!! I hope you enjoy it later this evening :) Happy Friday!
