The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug | Full Reaction

I knew I would love this film, but I wasn't prepared for how much Smaug would absolutely win me over lol. His voice was like silk over fire and I was completely captivated! He was a living storm, a force beyond reckoning, a truly intelligent and terrifying dragon! Bilbo's encounter with Smaug was full of emotions and perfect contrasts. His quiet courage and sharp wit growing by the day. And Gandalf always amazes me, carrying the weight of looming darkness but still finding the light in all of it.

The storytelling was rich and immersive in this one! It wasn't just about gold or glory, but rather greed, power, and the choices that shape destinies! The tension was built beautifully and by the final scene I couldn't help but wish for more.. A feeling I remember very much from Fellowship of the Ring ✨ I can't wait to watch the final Hobbit film with you all next!

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug | Full Reaction

Comments

Two cameos of note: Director Peter Jackson did a cameo in each LOTR film including in Fellowship a peasant in Bree burping while eating a carrot which he duplicated in this film during the opening. Also a quick shot of a Lake Town resident wearing an eye patch was Stephen Colbert, host of the Late Show.

Andrew Roach

I haven't watched this movie in years and years. I tend to not watch reaction videos to movies I don't know well. It's either ones I love, or ones I have strong memories of, and wanting to try to relive those emotions I felt. But I loved your LOTR reactions so much that I knew I had to revisit this. I already love the world, and watching with someone exploring it for the first time is a great way to dive back in. Something I paid specific attention to this time is just how clear it is that civilization in Middle-Earth is already in decline. There are ruins everywhere. Cities are destroyed. Whole races of people are without a homeland. Mistrust is everywhere. And evil is on the rise. The world has fallen even further into ruin and despair by the time Frodo sets out on his journey. For all that, I love how much you believe in these characters. You believe in their goodness and decency completely. You trust in their decisions to be based in kindness and honor. It makes the evil seeping into the world feel that much more widespread and villainous when good people don't live up to their word or fail to protect what matters.

This is the movie where it really felt that stuff got real. Like you said, the last movie was, for the most part, a very whimsical and fun adventure. While this one still maintained a lot of that charm, the stakes just got so much higher, and the whole theme was a lot darker. Everything started to get set in motion. It felt a lot like going from the 1st and 2nd Harry Potter films, to the 3rd and 4th one. This was also the perfect movie for you to watch while you're sick, just getting cozy with some tea to just relax and escape into the world. Well... except for the spider forest LOL Every fight scene with Legolas is just 100x cooler thanks to him hahaha. I loved the Elf duo in this one! I really like Tauriel too. She brought a lot of that female-elf radiance that Arwen brought, but also as a fighter in the middle of the fray. It took me the longest time to place why her face looked so familiar until I finally realized her actress played Pym's daughter, Hope, in Antman! Smaug is awesome, enough said haha. At least in the movies I've watched and games I've played, the dragons have been the mindless killers. But Smaug is so (you used the perfect word), intelligent. He commands such a presence, and the way he arrogantly toyed with them the whole time, makes him so much more menacing That end credits song is sooooo good. I left it quietly playing in the background during your outro. The music in general was amazing again. While we didn't have the Dwarves theme anymore, we instead got Legolas' theme of the elves. And it's so majestic yet menacing at the same time. Amazing reaction again! Been loving your journey through these movies

Loving this reaction so far. Before I forget, I think you might be mixing up Haldir (Leader of the Lothlórien elf regimen at the Batlle of Helm's Deep) and Thranduil (King of the Woodland Elves and Legolas' father). Thranduil was not shown in the LOTR films. The key elves you met in LOTR: Elrond: Lord of Rivendell Galadriel and Celeborn: Lady and Lord of Lothlórien Haldir: Marchwarden of Lothlórien Legolas: Prince of the Woodland Elves and member of the fellowship

Farbod

I love this so much!! hahaha

You're right! Thank you for the reminder!

Hostilities and distrust between Elves and Dwarfs goes way back before any of these events and is set in the deep lore of the world and the creation of both of the races. If you'll read the Silmarillion it is explained there. House of Durin has had the most positive relationship with the Elves and we see examples of it in Lotr, the opening word for Moria doors is Mellon (friend) in Elvish. Smaug is definitely the one of best thing in these movies and the most badass dragon put in movies but when it comes to Tolkien's dragons Smaug is like a fly next to an eagle. You'll meet more of them in the Silmarillion. I like that Tolkien gave his dragons ability to speak since not only are they a threat by being a dragon but they have great intelligence and that makes them truly dangerous, that they might very well be smarter than you would make anyone sweat needles it also makes them much more of an character rather than just a beast. Names and vows have real power in Tolkien's world, that is why Bilbo talks in riddles with Smaug and doesn't give him his real name. Look into the eye of a dragon or give it your name and you'll essentially give the dragon power over you. Vows too are to be taken seriously and we see examples of this too in Lotr, Sam promises to stay with Frodo and he means it and takes it really seriously and we see what happens when they are broken, the ghost army is the perfect example, they promised to fight for Isildur but broke that vow and were punished for it severely until that promise was fulfilled. Power isn't free or unlimited either and for example creating powerful objects like the one Ring, Sauron had to put a lot of himself into it for the Ring to be powerful and that is why he was defeated by destroying it. Same is true for any powerful object, its creator has to give part of himself into it and the more powerful and skillful maker, the more powerful end result. The greatest Elven smith created objects which were so wonderful that he could not make any more and even the gods envied them. Once again Silmarillion will tell this story.

The elf that died in TT was Haldir, not Leoglas' father Thranduil :)

I loved this one sooooo much! Definitely more than the last! I hope you enjoyed it too :)

Kali Wali

Definitely a huge improvement over the last one! I actually LOVED this one and didn't feel any sleepy part in it like I did with the previous. Much more fleshed out characters, deep dives into lore, and the dragon scene had me glued to the monitor the entire time! I actually loved it so much! I can see that Thorin is more susceptible to the "sickness of the mind" vs. it just being thanks to the Arkenstone. But I still like that Bilbo kept the stone from him 'just in case'. Thorin's huge decline into greed was so noticeable and felt like a black wave just took over him. Kind of makes sense that it would be more genetics because he felt that urge as soon as he stepped foot back into the mountain. I kind of felt like Tauriel's character was a bit "meh" about the romance. Kili played the part VERY well with that speech on the table, but I did feel like something was always holding Tauriel back and chalked it up to her being unsure about it because she is an Elf and he a Dwarf. The romance was cute.. But powerful like Aragorn and Arwen's love? Definitely not. I was okay with the romance because it fit the storyline, but it did feel like something more was missing. I loooooved the riddle as well! This whole time I was thinking maybe the sunlight would shine on the keyhole and unlock the mountain. Then I started to panic with them as the sun faded and there was no shiny keyhole to be found.. Then the moonlight shining overhead felt like a lightbulb moment! I love how they did that entire scene!! And YES the Sauron riddle was also great.. How it felt like Suaron, but maybe was just a necromancer that unleashes him, but then Nooooo.. It is the One! Then our first glimpses at that wretched evil eye hit so much harder knowing that he was gaining more and more power and becoming who he is in LoTR! So awesome and chilling. But YES that detail about the actual Iris being Sauron himself... I love that! And now looking back at LoTR I will always see that flash that Gandalf saw when we see the Eye. It's both hilarious and awesome that the side quest thing came up in my mind too! I'm a gamer at heart so I love a good side quest and in my own life consider a lot of my tasks side quests haha. But very cool to know I fit in with the LoTR community with that joke hahaha. Can't wait for the final movie now!! See you there!

Kali Wali

LOL his vocal range is truly amazing!

Kali Wali

Yep this movie for me is definitely a big improvement compared to the first one. We get more fleshed out characters, and a lot more interesting story lines for them. I think Thorins corruptuon isn't just thanks to the Arkenstone, how it comes off to me is more like the entire treasure is the issue, and the way Bilbo described it in the first film "a sickness of the mind" in a weird fantastical sort of way, it sounds more like a family genetic illness, than the treasure being evil itself, like the Ring is. I do really like Tauriel as a character but unfortunately, studio interference shoved in this romance plot between her and Kili (I don't think it's a bad romance neccesarily, but I can't imagine people in suits coming in and just overtaking what the writers and directors have in mind for a project) most especially because Tauriels actress, Evangeline Lilly, specifically did not want to be involved in a romance plot 🙄 I loved that these first two movies had this subplot riddle that eventually leads to the reveal of Sauron. The moment that we literally see Saurons form, in his armor, as the Sauron/Mordor theme plays was so powerful and a great reveal. I also think it's so cool that the actual iris of The Eye is actually Sauron himself, and he's just surrounded in flame. It's a well established joke among Lord of The Rings fans they Gandalf is always going off on his own, completing side missions to gain extra xp like a Dnd character instead of doing the main quest with his party 😅 When he fought the Balrog on his own, he finally leveled up and became the White Wizard, but here he was too underleveled to take on the final boss 😂 The last Hobbit movie is a very interesting one, and I can't wait for you to see how this trilogy ends Kali! See you then!

Enjoy Benedict Cumberbatch voicing Smaug on this episode of the Graham Norton Show! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GHPNKUMf70&t=136s 🐉

Phil Stubblefield

Yay! Back to Middle-Earth we go!

Matthew Murdick

He is so good at doing Smaug (though I always just hear Sherlock whenever he does anything) - you should see if you can get a hold of some of the behind the scenes stuff to see the kind of contortions he put himself through when portraying Smaug. It's really very similar to the way Andy Serkis did Gollum. :)

Matthew Murdick

No wonder his voice was so silky smooth!! I definitely heard it and couldn't help but smile when some of his voice felt distinguishable haha! He did such an awesome job!

Kali Wali

That dragon sounds Strangely familiar :) Sorry... had to LOL. Looking forward to watching this one tomorrow is gonna help me get through my Monday!
