Serenity (+ River Tam Sessions) | Full Reaction

After completely falling in love with Firefly- it's rich lore, found family, and brilliant writing- it was absolutely heartbreaking to know that this show was cancelled far too soon. I grew so attached to every single character, their struggles, their victories, their quirks... So being able to watch Serenity to end my time in Firefly felt like a true gift. One last chance to keep flying with the crew and to see their story find some form of closure.
But I wasn't prepared at all for how hard this would hit me. It carried all the heart, humor, and camaraderie of the show, but with even higher stakes and gut punching moments I did NOT see coming. The love and care that Joss Whedon poured into this world was undeniable. Every scene felt like a true tribute to what Firefly was and could have been. The Reavers, the Alliance's secrets, and River's true potential all became exposed in a way that was both exhilarating and devastating. While I'll always wish Firefly had more time, Serenity gave it the send-off it truly deserved. And for that, I'll always be grateful.
Browncoats, thank you so much for following me on this journey. You have been a truly amazing community, and I can't wait to share my adventures through the comics with you as I move through them in the future :)

I watched this on Amazon Prime
I remember seeing Serenity before I even knew there was a firefly series. When Wash died the whole theater made a collective gasp and I was like huh. A few months later I discovered the series and it all made sense. I would have liked at least one or two more seasons of the show to complete some of the outstanding story arcs. All in all this is a great series and a great movie. Another really good sci-fi series is The Expanse. I would be surprised if it was not suggested already. It's a little bit like Firefly in that it has an amazing ensemble cast.

I just watched this movie and I'm so gutted by the deaths. I do remember seeing Ron Glass on Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, which I also recommend. Everything about this 'verse was so beautifully written and designed. My favorite pair was Simon and Kaylee, so I was heartaching the entire time 😪 I bet this movie was a big reason Summer got the gig on the Terminator show and Arrow. Fun fact: Summer and Sean Maher were on Arrow at the same time, but I don't think they had scenes together.
Also, I love that you had ME3 music playing in the background at the outro. Please keep it 💯 very much looking forward to future reactions.

I totally agree that if Wash hadn't died, the stakes wouldn't have been as high and that overall overwhelming feeling of "oh crap, is this really it???" wouldn't have happened.. I don't love looking at it as a cheap shock either. It definitely made the entire rest of the film an edge-of-your-seat experience and everything hit 10x harder after that.
And I've heard Doctor Who is great! I would love to get into that eventually on here!

I need to see these bloopers!
Kali Wali
2025-02-26 00:51:08 +0000 UTC
Reading another comment may undermine this but I had thought Wash was killed not to be a cheap shock but it set up the belief in the final battle that people could die. If Wash hadn't died we might have viewed that final battle without concern for anyone dying.
A series to keep in mind for down the road is Doctor Who, and whatever you think you know about it you probably don't. Great humor, great sci fi, some horror, powerful emotional moments and epic twists and turns. While it involves many seasons each season is 13 or less episodes with special movies along the way.

This is such a perfect description of what becoming a browncoat really looks like 😭🤎 You captured exactly what makes this journey so special. The joy, the heartbreak, and the lifelong love for something that was gone way too soon but still means so much.
I understand now why Firefly fans love watching these reactions. There is something really magical about seeing someone experience it for the first time. I've already told my mother in law and friends to watch this show and found myself texting them saying, 'well, what did you think about this?" or "wasn't this episode amazing, did you notice this!?" haha.
The way this community embraces newcomers is truly beautiful. I've been in/out of gaming communities that weren't so welcoming. In a way, it felt like they wanted to gatekeep me from experiencing the game fully and that I wasn't good enough to be a part of their club lol. But not here. There was so much love, deep dives and things to discover with this amazing community. And I'll always cherish that :) I'm honored to be a part of this club. Thank you!

Ahh, that makes a lot of sense. It definitely felt a bit like a reset at first, but I can see why it was necessary. You can't just assume everyone watching Serenity has seen and loved and cherished Firefly! I bet it was a tricky balance for Whedon and overall I think he handled it very well!

I love that you call Book our favorite kneecap-smashing friend hahaha. It's so true! But yes, absolutely. This movie took everything deeper, darker and more intense but still had it feeling like a natural extension of the show. Finally diving into River's story was really satisfying. And that final line! Actual chills. Simon truly gave River his all in every single way. And to see her finally take the wheel when things turned sideways was such a powerful moment for both of them!
And YES. This was basically a horror movie hahaha. The random Reaver faces throughout the whole thing, the jumpscares, even the music at times had me sweating lol. And hahaha I remember saying that, and wow did this movie make the Reavers an immediate and terrifying problem! The stakes were so high and on top of everything, the Operative was completely ruthless! I genuinely thought that after Wash's death, this is just how it's going to end... They aren't going to make it out.. This is it.
I love your perspective on the ending though and feel the same way! It's really easy to wish for more, but being grateful for what we got is such a peaceful way to look at it. I'll definitely be rewatching the series again another time in the future and I'll love every minute of it all over again ✨ I'm glad that you enjoyed this ride as much as I did! Discovering it alongside you was very awesome and hearing your thoughts throughout it all made the journey that much more special!

Chiwetel Eliofor absolutely owned that role! He was so chilling yet compelling and he was one of those villains that isn't really evil for the sake of it, but truly believes that he is serving a higher purpose. And you're so right, he deserves way more leading roles! He brings a lot of weight and nuance to every performance that he does. I felt it in the MCU, too!
The fact that Serenity even got made is truly a miracle, I agree. The fan love for this show is definitely unlike any I've seen so far, and it's amazing that such a short-lived show had enough impact to warrant a full film. And wow, $39 million?? Really proves that strong storytelling is enough and yes, movie budget bloat has gotten extremely insane.
This journey has been awesome & I'm so glad I made my way to it finally. I remember so many people recommending it to me during my time in Mass Effect and Star Citizen. I totally get why this movie would be an all-time favorite! it will definitely be holding a special place in my heart, too. ✨

This is a really beautiful message and I appreciate you so much for joining me on this journey through Firefly and Serenity! You summed it all up perfectly. This little underdog of a show survives because of love, and that's what makes it truly special. Even with all the heartbreak, the love that shines through both in the story and in the Browncoat community has kept it alive all these years!
You're also right about Serenity paving the way for The Avengers and I hadn't really ever thought about how big of a leap that was for Whedon, but it makes a lot of sense. He definitely proved with Serenity that he can handle an ensemble cast, emotional stakes, and incredible action!
As for Wash, yeah that one stung a lot. A hilarious Wash joke into the craziest shocking moment I've seen in this entire show/movie. And it really did add to that sense of danger and made every moment after feel like it could be the end for anyone.
And I absolutely loved that song hahahah. Thank you for sharing it! I can hear the anger and frustration in these lyrics 🤣😖😭 I also need that Firefly t-shirt! Very awesome song video thank you so much for sharing this with me! I got a laugh from it for sure and get why so many were so angry that this ended!! I'm one of them 100%...

One of the interesting things about watching Firefly reactions, is people have different opinions on River going barefoot. Some thought it made her look more cute and mysterious (I'm in that camp), while others think it was weird, and she should have had shoes on.

Oh! I definitely need to check some of these out. I also love that you pretend they are all in the same universe haha. Plus, I really loved Hannah John-Kamen in Antman and the Wasp! I definitely remember someone bringing that up back when I commented on it in the show with her tip-toeing around the empty ship that the Reavers took over! She did such a beautiful job at making River feel so mystical, powerful, dainty, and strong all at the same time! I love it..

I'm not sure if you had a chance to watch this yet, but if not then definitely prepare yourself haha. The ending really hit me. Everything that happened in this movie, everything that it uncovered and explained, and also everything that it ended... It had me in the feels, for sure! That ending with River and Mal though. Ugh- My poor heart hahaha

That's a really great point and I'm glad you pointed it out. Totally makes sense that Whedon had to reintroduce the characters for an audience that maybe hasn't seen Firefly. I really felt that shift in Simon (as you can tell lol) and definitely with Mal too. He was a lot rougher. But it did help streamline things a bit for the movie's pacing and I get why it had to be done! Appreciate your insight, as always :)

Becoming a Browncoat comes at a cost. It's 14 hours of falling in love. Followed by 2 hours and a broken heart. Then a lifetime of slightly bittersweet enjoyment. You can revisit the old flame anytime you want - and you'll probably want to do it often. Each time will be wonderful, and you'll pick up some new details, but it won't be quite like the first trip through.
I think that's why Firefly fans love watching reactions to the show so much. It's the closest you can get to that first experience. It's probably also why they love to bring new people into the club. Watching someone pay the price to get through the door is special in it's own way. There's a sense of shared melancholy, of having experienced the same tribulation together. It really is something unique, and wildly unusual to get from a failed TV show that didn't even finish airing all it's episodes.
Anyway, welcome to the club, Browncoat! :D

The reason the first third feels like old ground for the characters, is because Universal told Joss that he had bring the new people in to the story in order to get the movie made.

I loved this movie so much! After enjoying my time through the show, this was such a perfect next step for this world. The movie delved into a much darker 'verse and explored so many themes that we didn't get to go as far into during the show. And also gave us a lot deeper look into some of the characters, namely River. Outside of our favorite kneecap-smashing friend, Book, I think River was the biggest mystery during the show. Left me wanting a whole lot more, and a much deeper dive into her character. And this movie definitely gave it to me! Her and Simon's dynamic through the show was always my favorite character pair, and I just love how much he cares for her. So of course her line at the end "you've always taken care of me... now it's my turn" was soooo good
Okay, but lowkey why was this a horror movie LOL. Throughout on my first watch, I kept thinking back to one of your Firefly episode reactions where you said something to the effect of "I'm really not looking forward to the day when the Reavers become a problem". Well we sure got that now hahaha. All the darkness in this movie, seeing the murderous Reavers firsthand, the ruthlessness of the Parliament assassin, and seeing some of the crew die, left me as uncertain and worried as you about everyone's safety in the final moments
I really think this was such a fitting sendoff to this amazing world and crew! Still so many unanswered questions, but instead of feeling sad about what could have been, I feel thankful for what was. And getting to experience this journey right alongside you! Thanks for everything!

the Pax had an adverse effect--it worked too well. as you reiterated, it also had an adverse opposite effect, but not for 10%. the actress on the recording they found says, "about a tenth of a percent", or 0.1%, which is 1/1000. she also says, "There's 30 million people here...", so she estimates that they initially created about 30 thousand of what would eventually be called 'reavers', on Miranda.

Serenity was my introduction to Chiwetel Ejiofor (the Operative). And I have to say, he played one of the most impressive villains I've ever seen. He's such a good actor that I'm surprised he hasn't gotten more leading roles. Anyway, one thing about the Operative that you may not have picked up on is the moment when he told Mal that "there is nothing left to see". He wasn't talking about an ability to disappear. He was telling Mal that his belief in the Alliance has been shattered. Without that belief, he had lost his sense of purpose. There was "nothing left" of what he had been before Mal showed him that horrific recording.
One other thing I'd like to touch on is just how amazing it is that Serenity was even made. Star Trek pulled off something similar, but the original Star Trek series ran for three full seasons (79 episodes total). Firefly only had 14 episodes, yet it gained such a devoted following that Universal decided to take a chance on a feature film. Also, Serenity was made for only $39 million (roughly $65 million in today's money). I think it goes to show how bloated movie budgets have gotten over the years. You don't need hundreds of millions of dollars to make a quality film.
Thank you for taking this Firefly/Serenity journey with everybody. I haven't quite finished your Firefly reactions, but I wanted to jump right into Serenity just because it's one of my favorite movies of all time.

Around the 31:00 mark, note the newscaster saying that "the only survivors of the massacre locked themselves in a vault." If the guy had listened to Mal and went to the vault, he would have survived. Mal saved a bunch of lives that day.

Thank you very much for sharing your love of this show. It was so very touching that during Mal's speech about love, a tear ran down the entire length of your face.
With all the struggles and strife...love from the crew, the cast and the fans have made this little underdog of a show survive. Without it, this movie would never have been made. The work you have done on your channel helps keep this amazing show alive.
It is noteworthy to consider that this was the first motion picture written and directed by Joss Whedon. In his second outing in this role, it was for an obscure arthouse film known "The Avengers". It seems unlikely that Joss would have been handed the reigns to such a project by Marvel without a movie like Serenity on his resume.
It was painful to watch you experience Wash's death. Sorry for your pain. Narratively Wash's demise was important for the reason you stated. You went through the entire ending wonder if any of the crew would survive. This is difficult to achieve with the propensity of "plot armor" protecting the main cast in most stories.
You really understood this show and its characters...maybe this is due in part to your rewatches. For example, early in the movie you put together that River must know something about the origins of the Reavers.
As a going forward into a little of the stuff that surrounds this show, please watch the following video and tell me what you think. The link is https://youtu.be/thpIZZVd6iU?si=8ePr_ckvbKPRbd0V
It is a song called "Bring Firefly Back" that goes after Fox for abusing the show. The actor who portrayed Book was there when I saw this video for the first time at a Serenity re-watch screening. As for the lead singer whose name is Ginny, she graduated from the same University as I (although she belongs to a younger generation). Hope you enjoy.

The reason that Wash and Book were killed off was because they were looking at the possibility of rebooting the show after the movie but the actors that played those 2 guys were already committed to other projects and wouldn't have been able to rejoin it.

There's been a couple of shows that followed in Firefly's footsteps but fell short. Very fun to watch though.
Killjoys with Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost from Antman & The Wasp) and Aaron Ashmore (whose identical twin is in the X-Men films).
There's also Dark Matter (2015, SyFy) which only ran for 3 seasons but I really enjoyed it.

If you're curious why River was often barefoot, I once asked her actress Summer Glau this at a convention, and she said she had trouble getting into character, or becoming River, so she asked Joss Whedon if it would be ok if she took off her shoes and socks and went barefoot as it would help her be more comfortable on set, so he allowed her to go barefoot whenever she wanted.

I believe the shift in Simon knowing more about River’s condition and the more “intense” Mal/Simon interactions are due to Whedon needing to adjust things slightly for a movie audience that might never have seen the show so he had to introduce the characters all over again basically and set up the pieces needed for the story told in the movie.
