Captain Marvel | Full Reaction

I think what made this movie so special and amazing to me was how seamlessly it tied into the large MCU, especially through Nick Fury. Seeing Fury younger, funnier, and still figuring things out was such an awesome contrast to the no-nonsense leader he becomes. I absolutely loved Carol's story and her journey- figuring out who she really is, uncovering the trust about her past, and ultimately embracing her full power (all the Thor vibes there lol)

Now, knowing that Endgame is next, I can't stop wondering how Captain Marvel will fit into it all. She's easily one of the strongest characters we've seen and the fact that Fury can trust her enough to call her in makes her feel like a total game-changer. But how??? I'm really excited to see how she interacts with the other Avengers after that end-credit scene and knowing how amazing her personality is. She's a whole vibe haha. There's so much anticipation building up, and I can't wait to experience it all with you next!

Captain Marvel | Full Reaction

Comments

I am late catching up on these movies, but before I watch, I just know you're gonna like the soundtrack for this one. Even though the movie isn't that great, it has some cool easter eggs in it. Cheers!

Donovan Sparks

Tiny bit of info that you might have figured out during the edit: Avenger is not the name of Carol's old plane; it's her callsign. Military pilots get a nickname early in their careers(sometimes even during training). The nickname(callsign) is chosen by the pilot's fellow pilots. An example is Maverick from Top Gun. Tom Cruise's character is named Pete Mitchell, but everyone calls him Maverick because that's his callsign. As an aside, the name of Goose in Captain Marvel is a reference to Top Gun. In that movie, Maverick's backseater(or RIO) and best friend(played by Anthony Edwards) has that as his callsign. Realistically, Maria and Carol probably would have referred to each other as Photon and Avenger rather than their given names, but that would've spoiled the surprise at the end. (Like in Top Gun, Pete and Nick always refer to each other as Maverick and Goose.)

Michael Kemmet

Also I think Brie Larson must have been aware of all the internet hubbabaloo over her but she took the high road which is pretty cool.

Richard

Marvel in general did an absolutely phenomenal job with the casting - I mean, can you imagine anyone else playing Tony Stark? Or Steve Rogers? I believe the casting director for most of the first 4 phases was Sarah Halley Finn and she absolutely crushed it. Brie Larson was probably the first one that got pushback afaik. Speaking of these comic book movies made me think: Kali if you’ve never done so you should attend one of the comic-con conventions and slay them with that Diablo outfit. 😀

Richard

Jude Law also played Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts 2 and 3

Paul Wright

See you in Endgame! ✨

Kali Wali

See you in Endgame! 👀

Kali Wali

The fact that Endgame is his final cameo breaks my heart 😭🩷

Kali Wali

I'll have to begin this journey soon for you all!

Kali Wali

🤣🩷

Kali Wali

That's really interesting! Thank you for explaining! That actually adds a whole layer to the Kree's superiority complex.

Kali Wali

Yeah, I totally get what you mean. But at the same time, looking at it now and only hearing that bad flack afterwards makes me appreciate even more what this movie stood for! Carol's journey - breaking free from control, reclaiming her identity, and realizing that she doesn't need anyone's permission to be powerful - feels so relevant. But see you in Endgame!! 👀✨

Kali Wali

Honestly, I appreciate you for even taking the time out to read my comment, and I completely understand where you're coming from. I'm glad to see you and the family are settling in well! Much love!❤️🙏🏾

iameNeRG (Rodney Gant)

I always forget to add Vision into the mix with powerful Avengers! I loved this one. I think going into it very blind helped so I'm glad I never got wind that it wasn't well liked!

Kali Wali

Ooo, maybe I am recognizing him from looking at the posters when you all mentioned a RDJ Sherlock movie!

Kali Wali

I'm not surprised, but I love that we had a similar experience with this one! Going in very blind and having no idea what to really expect made Captain Marvel a really awesome and fun mystery to unravel. And yeahhh, the Kree were totally suspicious to me with the whole "control your emotions" mantra and "we don't show the leader, ever because you're not good enough to be in front of them" lol. Or maybe I'm just an expert at gaslighters at this point in my life 😭😂 But yessss, the scene where she just keeps getting back up was a highlight for me too! Getting to see Fury and Coulson again as fresh agents was awesome haha. I love how the writing made us think "is this when Fury loses his eye?? oh, no wait it's still there hmm" hahaha. Then to end up with the fuzzy Flerken taking it out bahahha. No wonder why he's never honest about it when people ask 😭 I also looved the 90's nostalgia and the effort they put into making everything so accurate all the way down to the OG Radio Shack sign and the t-shirts everyone was wearing. You're right that the soundtrack is definitely up there with Guardians for me, too! Anything with No Doubt, Garbage, AND Nirvana on it is top tier lol. That would have been so awesome to mention wearing a favorite 90's grunge rock t-shirt during the reaction!!! But I'll break one out during a future 90's vibes movie now 🤣

Kali Wali

I really appreciate your perspective on Captain Marvel! It's definitely wild how much pushback female-led stories can get, but I love that the MCU didn't shy away from it when they made Carol confident and powerful! You're right about the infinity stones- at this point, they have definitely shaped the universe in one way or another. So it makes me even more curious going into Endgame knowing everything that we know now! I honestly don't even know how to respond to that incredible compliment. The fact that you felt inspired to finally make an account just to join the community here is beyond humbling. It means a lot to me that my reactions can bring you joy, and I'm really grateful to have you on this journey! Thank you for being here! And that's an insane matchup to think about... Wanda vs. Captain Marvel?! That's the kind of battle that would probably recreate the entire solar system and level entire planets lol. I have no idea how that would go down, but now I can't stop wondering about it haha I'll check DM's! It's the weekend so things slowed down a bit while I unboxed more of my home! I added the beautiful mugs to my mug collection tho ✨ See you in Endgame!

Kali Wali

After seeing some comments and thoughts on YouTube, I definitely have the advantage going into these completely blind! It was such a fun experience trying to piece things together in time and once I finally knew we were in the 90's I loved it haha. Nostalgia all over the place! Also yes totally the Nine Inch Nails shirt hahaa. That soundtrack is a highlight for me and all of those small details made everything feel super authentic to the time! I appreciate the heads-up about avoiding breakdowns now! As tempting as it has been to dive deeper, I've been a bit of a ghost on YouTube in fear that things will get spoiled. I didn't even premiere Ant-Man and the Wasp today on YT because I was worried things would get out of hand haha. Also, awesome Top Gun fact! I need to see that movie sometime when I go through my Tom Cruise phase! Sadly I haven't seen anything from Tom Cruise yet except in a documentary about Scientology hahaha. Which I guess is going to be a bit weird for me going into his actual films from that 😂 See you in Endgame!! 👀✨

Kali Wali

Glad you loved it, too!! See you in Endgame 👀✨

Kali Wali

I guess my time staying unplugged and offline has its benefits hahaha. I honestly didn't even know that this movie was not well liked until the comments here and seeing some mixed reviews. I honestly really liked it. I looooved Carol and her personality and overall vibe. And I love her arc of going from being gaslit and told to "control your emotions" to an ultimate badass. She's awesome and I can't wait to see what she brings into Endgame :)

Kali Wali

Thank you so much! I'm super grateful to have you along for this crazy MCU ride. I've loved it just as much as you have! I think I've decided to just go into Endgame completely blind, without any trailers. I've done this with a few games in the past and always get spoiled from them and usually end up regretting my decision lol. Because of that experience, I think I'll get the most out of the movie by experiencing everything fresh! I hope you understand! Also, I really appreciate the well wishes and new home wishes! I finally unpacked a bit more this weekend and only have 2 boxes left ✨ This place is starting to feel more and more like home and we've been loving it! Thanks for thinking of me!

Kali Wali

Bahahaha 😂😭 See you in Endgame! 👀

Kali Wali

I can see that!

Kali Wali

I also asked my cat and she closed her eyes to pretend sleeping.. She's def a Flerken.

Kali Wali

Eeee see you in Endgame! 👀✨

Kali Wali

Yesss I'll be watching those credits through! Thank you!

Kali Wali

I totally get it! But I am surprised to see so many that didn't love this one. I can see what you're saying about Carol. Her character is definitely more reserved at the start, which I think was very intentional because of all the gaslighting and "control your emotions" training that she went through. Plus she is also formerly Air Force which makes even more sense to me. I appreciate you being super honest about your perspective! I think that this is what makes movies so great- They hit differently for everyone depending on how you view it and I love that! It's what makes these discussions so fun and why you'll always find me lurking in here with you all lol. See you in Endgame next! 👀✨

Kali Wali

I actually agree with you and didn't realize Captain Marvel wasn't well liked until I opened up my posts for this one! 👀 I love how Carol's story is kinda a parallel with Bucky's and I think that's why I immediate got a soft spot for her. Her entire identity was stripped away and she was turned into a tool to fight and manipulate.. The criticism that her personality is too "wooden" at first kinda misses the point, like you said. She was literally conditioned to suppress her emotions every step of the way, so no wonder why she doubted herself at every turn. Watching her break free from all of that was so powerful. She got to embrace who she truly was and its really satisfying to see! And yeah, the parallels to real-world gaslighting and control are definitely present in this one.. Maybe that's why my viewing of it today is a lot different than those that watched it when it came out? I also loved Nick Fury in this and finally getting his backstory! They eye fake out writing "Is this when he loses his eye!? oh no, maybe this time!?" had me hahaha and I love that they put that in there. His arc here totally tracks with the Fury we see later. It makes sense that after what happened with Goose and the whole Kree-Skrull situation, he'd learn to play his cards closer to his chest. And the 90's setting was so fun lol.

Kali Wali

i didnt need another movie just 10 min from end game would have done it

rubberkidney

I'm also frustrated that Hulk never got another film :( But like others have said I think it was a money power issue which is always the case unfortunately! Poor Hulk

Kali Wali

LOL Nerf guns always make the loudest pops. I have a huge one and it makes a whistle sound when you shoot the darts it's pretty awesome 😭😂 I loved the 90's vibes in this one tho!! Brought back a lot of awesome memories haha

Kali Wali

I'm a little surprised to see how this movie wasn't liked much! But I guess on another viewing, I could see how it's not a favorite. It's very slow-burn compared to what's been happening in all of Phase 3 so far. But I loved it and I loved Carol and her attitude lol. See you in Endgame! 🤯

Kali Wali

Not going to lie, when I first saw Captain Marvel, I found Carol's personality a bit annoying, but after watching this with your perspective, I've actually come to like the movie more. I wouldn't put it in my top 10 list, but It's not as bad as I remember it being back when it was first released.

McShades

Btw don't know why I said recorded I meant filmed lol

Rashad Walker

Stan recorded this and endgame before passing so u will see him one more time u just have to find him 😉

Rashad Walker

I second this motion

Paul Wright

Hey Kali, glad you liked the movie. As I wrote earlier it is still in my TOP3 MCU movies. A wonderful movie that always entertains me and sparks me with positive energy. As well as Carol herself, a great character, wonderfully played. As for the pager, I think Fury didn't need to call on Carol earlier because he had Avengers. New York, Ultron, etc. He could always count on them. It wasn't until the scene after the credits of Infinity War that he realized the Avengers had lost and he knew it was that moment to call on Captain Marvel. And now it's time for Endgame. 😊😁

Łukasz Jarczewski

I'm so glad that you enjoyed this one. I've seen this film get a lot of trouble across the internet, especially in comparison to other MCU films (at least up to the point it was first released), but I think I actually fist pumped during this one more often than any other. As per my comment on Antman and the Wasp, I'm much more into the emotional context of these stories than the plots or the powers. To me, this film touches on so much more of the emotions underneath a hero's persona than many of other films (not that many of them don't do those kinds of moments well of course - they do - it just usually isn't as pronounced in them as it is here). Like you, I also love how many things are connected by this film that explains many many little points/questions the other films might make you think of. So - you're on the eve of what many consider the greatest film made in MCU history (not sure I agree - Winter Soldier and a Spiderman film you've yet to see will always battle it out for the number one spot for me but I think Endgame runs a very close third) - good luck!

Matthew Murdick

We are in the Endgame now! As many others have said.. watch the credits :)

Rippan

We are finally here next up: Endgame!

The Dingo

I'll repeat what I wrote to you under your Avengers reaction. If you want to see more of Coulson and SHIELD I highly recommend checking out and reacting to Agents of SHIELD. It's my favorite series of all time.

David Fürstenberg

This was a great, fun, movie that really exposed a troubling dichotomy in the fandom. Strong female characters have to work extra hard to get the approval male characters get by default for a loud contingent. Those people will turn around and give you a list of non-leads they like, but fail to grasp the irony of it. So glad you like it!

Chris Chatham

From looking around a little, although it was released in 92' it existed on a demo in 91' and I saw suggestions the demo may have been recorded as early as April 90'. Maybe as a pilot she spent some time at the AF station near Tacoma and saw them play it in person, trying out new things. The NERF gun I think you just have to blame the foley artist.

Chris Chatham

I just wanted to added a quick explanation for your question regarding why some Kree are blue skinned and some are pink. In short, the blue skin is the original "pure" Kree color. Thousands of years ago there was interbreeding between the Kree and another race that had the pink skin. It has turned out over time that the mixed race are more resilient so they are now the majority on Hala. However, the blue Kree still maintain most of the powerful positions and considered themselves to be higher status than the pink skinned.

Matthew

the bad reception for this movie seems like.. a turningpoint.. or that's when I caught on it anyway, for the whole "antiwoke/anti-DEI"" thing. It really started to gain momentum.. maybe a little before but, it's so bleak watching back on it now.. so many people just hate inclusivity so much. idk, I still find the movie a little cheesy at times but nothing that justifies so much hate. The vibes are still so very rad and as a 90's kid it's still so rewarding to catch on all the timepieces left here and there 🥹and Danvers is hella badass and charismatic. I'm not ready for Endgame (but I am.) (But I'm not.) (but I'll be. and the second I get that notification I'll get to it 😤) thanks for sharing c:

I.Have.No.Band

This movie was received so poorly on release, but I never got the hate for it. It's a solid movie. I loved the "ronan is...*innocent shrug* so big on genocide" lol. But three of the most powerful Avengers come from the infinity stones. we got Vision, wanda, and Captain Marvel.

Phil Tilly

There's been a trope in Sci Fi for decades about not judging a book by its cover, where the plot shows a conventionally beautiful people end up being Evil, and stereotypically hideous creatures end up being Good and victims of the former. It probably started in an episode of Star Trek. Maybe even Doctor Who.

KJ Gould

I had the same thought while watching it today, but I don't think thats what the writers had in mind while writing the plot. A movie like that would never get funding from the DoD if it was drawing a clear parallel to that conflict you mention. But its cool when people can still realize injustice in the world even if it most likely was not the intention from the writers. When they released this movie it was basically a huge ad for the Air Force.

BigBrain69

Pixel the Flergen! Love it. Jude Law made 2 Sherlock Holmes movies with Robert Downey Jr.

Richard

This is another one of those MCU movies that took me by complete surprise and I loved it all the more for that! I had zero expectations going in, had no clue who Captain Marvel is, where she's from or anything about her really. So this was such a fun and vibey mystery to unfold! You rolled through all the punches of the plot twists really well, and got suspicious of the Kree wayyy faster than I did haha. Overall thought this was a really empowering origin story! Really loved the scene of her repeatedly getting back up throughout her life Seeing Fury, and Coulson as everyday field agents was really cool! And getting to see a lot more of Fury's character develop too as the sidekick. Like you said, one of my favorite things about this movie was how many bridges it put up between different loose ends in the MCU we've seen so far. And all in such a short span of time at the end too. How Shield ended up with the Tesseract, how Fury lost his eye (all of this so far thanks to a kitty / flerken LOL), and so many other things! 10/10 nostalgia vibes for the era that this movie was set in haha. I love that we literally had the same experience with this movie, considering we grew up in the same era. All the way down to both of us going "Is it going to show a Radio Shack?" when she was talking to the security guard LOL. Oh man, Blockbuster Video... I remember going there so many times as a kid to rent Nintendo 64 games! This one is up there with Guardians of the Galaxy for amazing soundtracks! These were all my high school / college jams. I was initially gonna mention before you watched this movie that it could be fun if you wore your favorite 90's/2000's grunge rock t-shirt during the reaction. But I didn't want to risk spoiling the vibes you were gonna get in this film haha

M1 Maz

Glad you liked the mugs! Us introverted empaths are pleasers so if you’re happy I’m happy. Also happy you liked Captain Marvel. It was divisive, maybe a little bit for misogynist reasons as it’s delicate balance for a female actor to be strong and confident without some insecure males feeling emasculated. I was one who mostly liked the movie. Isn’t it something how often the stones factor into the origin stories of these characters - and there’s still more to come! Now I wanted to say, there’s no greater compliment I can give you regarding how good you are at what you do; then to say that ever since YouTube was a thing it has been by far my most consumed media. Everything I’m into, sports coverage and analysis, music reviews, concerts, news, comedy channels, everything for me is YouTube - but I never considered making an account for 20 YEARS until I discovered your channel. Seeing the MCU and other films through those big browns and gray matter of yours is the life hack I didn’t know I needed 🤗. Now a little non-spoilery teaser for you to keep you engaged with the MCU - wow Captain Marvel sure is powerful huh? I wonder how a battle between her and Wanda would go 🤔. I sent a DM per your request.

Richard

Maybe Lt. Trouble played her the song in an off-screen moment lol.

John A

Make that 3 hours :)

John A

I didn't read anyone else's comments before I wrote this so if I repeat things sorry. I had a feeling you would like this movie. You had the benefit of not having a clue what this movie was about going in, the timeline, the powerset. If you were an MCU freak like me, you saw the trailers, watched the breakdowns and learned all you could because at the time we were still waiting for endgame. It was fun watching you being very confused at first, trying to figure out where this was taking place and what time period it was, something told me once you did you would feel the nostalgia. I also had a feeling you would like the movie from the time period and the sound track alone. I don't know if you clocked her Nine Inch Nails T-shirt or not and you might of but didn't mention it. In 1995 I was in my early 20's and the music they used was everything I was listening to at that time. If no one explained what a flerken was to you already, you can google it and it will be safe to learn what it is without a spoiler. I had the benefit of breakdowns of the movie after the release to get my questions answered and they are still on YouTube but I would suggest you avoid them for possibilities of Endgame spoilers. This movie did 1.1 billion dollars worldwide. Part of that was people just dying waiting for Endgame imo. Some people didn't care for Brie Larson in the role. Some of the press she did painted her in a controversial light but I didn't mind her. I think she did fine. Oh and Goose was named after Maverick from Top Gun's RIO(back seater)... and "Avenger" was her call sign, not the name of her plane. :) If you haven't seen Top Gun/ Top Gun Maverick then those would be good movies to watch in the future. Not much more to say, it was great to see Colson again and I had fun with the movie. Higher, Faster, Farther baby! Can't wait for your Endgame reaction. It's going to be EPIC!

John A

I absolutely lovedddd this movie! Awesome reaction! Thank you!

Jonathan

NOPE! Kali, do not watch any trailers. Just go in the movie blind. Its WAYYYYY better that way.

Jonathan

And that's why I love Kali's reactions so much! Because she is not TAINTED by the toxic and ugly comments about past Marvel movies.

Jonathan

Maybe Carol heard Nirvana when back on Earth in a place we the audience just didn't witness 😂

KJ Gould

I was curious what you think about this movie. I remember many people did not really like it all that much. I saw many complaints that Cpt. Marvel is too OP and that they did not like Brie Larson as an actress. Imo maybe it is not the best movie ever but its not a BAD movie. I personally liked it eventhough I am not a 90s kid and I did not get most of the references. I would say its a pretty alright movie somewhere in the middle if you rank all the movies. I also did not hate the actress. Its refreshing that you go in with an open mind cause on the internet you will see most people hating this movie.

BigBrain69

Hi Kali! First, I just want to say that I loved this reaction! You always manage to help me appreciate a piece of media in a way that I haven't thought of before. I am truly grateful that we have made it here on this journey, and I have one final request. There is one specific trailer for Endgame that came out, that really encapsulates the feeling of the journey we've been through so far. This is truly a special trailer that I think you would really enjoy. If I have to pay for a small reaction, I am willing to. But I am begging you to watch this trailer before you watch the movie. In full transparency, I will say that the trailer itself does contain minor hints at spoilers of the movie, which is why I have taken it upon myself to re-edit the trailer ( specifically editing out the spoiler parts and replacing them with scenes from Infinity War) and upload it to one of my YouTube channels. I am more than willing to provide a link to your editors or mods just to double check that the link itself and video is safe to watch. Either way, I am begging you to watch and react to this trailer. You will not be disappointed! Also, I hope that you and the family are adjusting well to the new place!!

iameNeRG (Rodney Gant)

If you drop End Game while I am working from home and I get nothing done for two hours, I hope you feel bad about it!

Paul M

This is such a weird movie for me. Sometimes, I watch it and really like it and other times I am really not into it. I don't think I have ever experienced that with any other movie.

Brian Leonard

So is every cat of earth a flerken or was this a one off...😅 I have tried asking my cat be he is not saying anything back. 😁

Slow Shadow

you did a fantastic job following and navigating the twists and turns this movie gave us. I'm really looking forward to Endgame. Hope it's not too far off!

Jim

Lets gooo! looking forward to watching this one. Just remember what I said about the Endgame credits. No end credit scene, just let them play!

Simon Haynes

I wasn’t a huge fan of this one, unfortunately. I mean, it did have some things I liked – I like Maria, I like the Skrulls, and of course, it was cool seeing the origins of S.H.I.E.L.D. The problem for me is that I just didn’t find the main character very interesting. For one thing, I think Brie Larson was miscast (not that I think she’s a bad actress – I just don’t think she was the best fit for this role), but I also just don’t think she was written all that interesting. I actually found Maria far more compelling, and I remember spending a lot of the movie kind of wishing it was about her, lol. That’s just me though. I know there are people who like this movie, and that’s great.

Malcolm Ferguson

right you take out all the garbage 'captain marvel is the most powerful entity evar crap and replace it with much more needed time on hulks story maybe even a redemption against thanos instead we got to see captain marvel show thor what a supreme girl boss she is.

rubberkidney

The rights to The Hulk as standalone movies is tied up with Paramount studios due to bad deals Marvel made decades ago before the Disney buyout. That's why he's only a side character in the Disney Marvel movies after the first phase. As for Captain Marvel leading the Avengers - she does in the comics - without spoiling potential future movies, Captain America lead a unified World against multiple threats (including Thanos who came to Earth for a big battle). Captain Marvel will unite a Universe against a possibly bigger threat.

KJ Gould

It's an underrated entry in the MCU that deserves more love. Some of it is review bombs by sad trolls, but I think a lot of it is not fully appreciating what Carol Danvers went through. She was literally blasted by an energy wave from tech created out of the Space stone. Then she had her memories completely suppressed by the Kree, and to top it off given a false background and was constantly gaslit by the smarmy Yon-Rogg (Jude Law). So *of course* her personality as Vers is a bit wooden & stilted: she got scolded every time she was emotional! And yes there were clear, not so subtle parallels made with how often women can be gaslit as a form of patriarchal control. It's not anything to get hung up about. As she gradually pieces her life back together, Carol loosens up until she's finally free from control. But I have to imagine there's a lot of therapy & healing still needed. I love this movie gave us a lot of backstory to Nick Fury as you say. Some got mad that his blindness originated this way - especially when he talks about trust in the Winter Soldier - but it serves as a reminder Fury became an inventive liar to get the results he needed. Whatever it takes. I also love the 1990s setting and various pop culture nods which I grew up with! As for the plot - dare I say it has parallels with what's been happening in the middle east currently. We're told the Kree are this advanced, noble civilisation and the Skrulls are these monstrous terrorists - but it turns out the Skrulls are refugees that have been scattered across the galaxy, and the Kree have taken lands and ethnically cleansed the people from them. Maybe we can place the blame squarely with the Supreme Intelligence and the propaganda it's indoctrinated the Kree with, but some of the Kree are definitely fully complicit. Controversial take, I know 😊

KJ Gould

ah yes the character that marvel chose to stuff in to 'lead' the next phase of the mcu at the cost of doing anything cool with the hulk. failed in the comics, failed in the movies.

rubberkidney

Captain Marvel is pretty good but as a bonafide 90's Kid™, I have two major beefs. 1. If Carol left Earth in 1989 and that scene with Lawson took place in her memories, she wouldn't know anything about the song Come As You Are, which released in 1991. 2. I owned that EXACT Nerf gun that the Kree lady shot at Carol, and I know for a fact that it made a much louder air popping noise than what the movie portrayed. They should have hired me as a 90's consultant. Other than that, good movie.

Dude Longcouch

I enjoyed this movie a lot when it came out, despite all of the so-so reviews! I'm glad you liked it too! As you say, looking forward to Endgame... 😲
