The Pacific | Part Three | Full Reaction

This one was a stark contrast to the brutal combat from Part One and Two. Seeing the Marines in this light in Melbourne, exhausted but celebrated as true heroes, felt like a much-needed breath from the horrors back on Guadalcanal. The shift in tone was actually jarring after so much suffering. Robert Leckie's romance with Stella was a warm welcome and I'm glad that it gave him a much-needed brief escape from the war. At first, it felt like he finally found some peace. A new family to call his own that prayed for his safe return instead of worry about a car engine. But then the looming reality of his duty as a Marine made it clear that nothing would last, and he isn't in control of his fate anymore.

This episode was all about that false sense of peace. By the end of the episode, it was crystal clear that no matter how far they traveled, the war would always follow them. Even though this episode wasn't about combat, it showed a different kind of battle: the Marine's fight to hold onto any sense of normalcy, even when they know it's slipping away.

It's crazy to see how rare that honor is. It's an honor few will ever earn, and even fewer survive to wear. Wow

In the entire history of the MoH the only 2 men that were awarded more than 1 were both marines. As well as the youngest man to ever be awarded a MoH was also a marine. He may have gone where few marines have been, but the ones that he joined can claim the title of the elite of the elite!

"Spicy" Pixel. Love it.

MPs. The only MOS in which people have enlisted specifically to be buddy fuckers. The true Noble Order of the Blue Falcon. NO ONE normally gets the MoH. In the entire history of our nation less than there have been less than 4,000 recipients. It's not just a place where few Marines have ever gone. It's a place where few of us in any branch have ever been. MoH recipients no longer salute officers who outrank them. Everyone, including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (the highest ranking officer in the US Armed Forces) salutes MoH recipients.

Hi Kali.....love following along with you and great reaction as always. I'm glad you are able to watch the introductions before the episodes. I'm not really sure why they separated them either, but each gives a bit of context about the episode you are going to watch. As you could see on the map, the Japanese captured a large swath of the Pacific, and as stated, Guadalcanal was the first step in pushing them back towards Japan and helping to secure Australia. Some of the Pacific battles aren't as well known so having these introductions help to understand what is happening. To give some context as to the timeline. In June of 1942, before we went ashore on Guadalcanal the Americans won their first big battle at Midway. During the battle we ended up sinking four of their carriers that they had used to attack Pearl Harbor (they had used a total of six in the attack on Pearl). The battle of Midway turned the Japanese away from capturing Midway Island and prevented them from destroying the American Carriers that weren't at Pearl Harbor during that attack (we did end up losing one carrier, The Yorktown). Also during the summer of 1942 Easy Company was created and started training at Camp Toccoa.

This was such a needed and appreciated episode to give us a little break after we were instantly thrown into the horrors and intensity from episode 1. It also was great for some character building and getting to know these men a lot better. Because I agree with you, that it was very hard for me to keep track of names and faces early on too haha. For as much as Australia was a beautiful paradise for these marines, I can't shake that feeling of hollow happiness they must have been feeling through it all. Trying to enjoy what you can, but also knowing what's waiting for you in the future I really really love the scene with Leckie having dinner with Stella's parents. Idk what it is about it, and it's hard to describe, but it's just really heartwarming. Them asking about his family, his background, and genuinely just appreciating him. It was really nice The interviews / mini-documentary before each episode is adding soooo much to this show, and I really appreciate that you're watching them! Especially because I missed out seeing them watching this on Max (and didn't think that they might be on YT). Not really sure why Max doesn't include them.... I guess you could argue that they heavily foreshadow the episode, but in a show like this, the point isn't to sit and see 'what happens next', but rather really understand and appreciate everything that we're seeing. And those interviews help so much with exactly that. Priming us with additional context before we dive in

Thank you so much for this info! I'll keep that link handy now that I know and won't be scrambling wondering where to find the final one haha. Appreciate you!

It's been an intense journey, but very worth it. I always heard/read about the European front and never really too much about the Pacific, so this has been an interesting dive.

Hi Kali! Great reaction!! Just a heads up in case you don’t get a new capture card by the time you reach the end of the series: keep that video with the episode 1 intro saved for future use, because that’s the only video I know of on YouTube that also has the episode 10 intro! There’s no separate episode 10 intro video on YouTube. For that video, the timestamp to start the episode 10 intro is 21:07 and it lasts until the end of the video.

I need to find time to watch these with you!
