This was an awesome movie!! I love how perfectly it handles cause and effect. Every little detail, from the fading photograph to Marty's accidental interference with his parent's meeting, felt so precisely planned but wildly effortless in execution. I loved how the movie set up all of these small moments and made me think about the "what if's" of every action. Every decision Marty made had ripples, whether good or bad, and watching him try to fix things while unknowingly creating new problems was such a fun ride. It had me hooked from start to finish!

Now, I really can't wait to see what happens next. With how the movie ended, teasing even more chaos and adventures, I'm really excited to see where Marty and Doc (and apparently Jennifer lol) go from here. The way the film balanced humor, tension and heart was beautifully done and I'm really hoping the sequels keep that same energy going!

Oh my hahahaha

Kali Wali

Our small Kentucky town of 5,000 people has had a drive-in movie theater since the 50s. For a short time in the 80s someone bought it and began showing XXX films. So yes, that was happening in the 80s.

MotoDork

die hard. no that's not one of them..

Jim

Yes, no doubt. In fact it looks like the 1950s' idealized image of itself, as seen in ads, sitcoms, and books for kids. But idealized from a teenager's perspective. In 1955, teens were not considered an important demographic, except as a source of troublemakers. That changed when teens had significant money to spend and pop culture competed for their dollars. In that sense especially, it's a nostalgic image for adults in 1985. A lot changed from 1950 to 1959. At first, not much different from the years of the great depression -- post-war prosperity was slow to arrive. WWII was a very recent memory. By the end, prosperity was taken for granted, the space age had begun, and the culture was future-oriented. This culture and its optimism were fragile, which is why it all fell apart by the end of the 60s. One of my clearest memories in high school was the hallway outside the "teachers' lounge". A huge cloud of tobacco smoke would pour out whenever anyone opened the door.

I'm so happy to see you reacting to this absolute classic. Being an old person, I saw this movie at the movies the summer before I turned 10. I love it... because it was great, obviously but also I was a huge Michael J. Fox fan, a huge Christopher Lloyd fan and had a massive crush on Lea Thompson. There wasn't any way this movie was going to be lost on me, but then it also turned out to be, like, the perfect movie. Honestly this one is my gold standard for movies in general. And for a change, my parents and I loved the same movie, because they had been 15 and 13 in 1955 and it was a perfect nostalgia blast for them.

Cory Stanish

Don't feel bad, I have to say I was quite impressed with how many of those little details you caught with precision!

Cory Stanish

I remember watching BTTF II at the movies when it came out and when that trailer came up I got so hyped for the third movie and then I still had to wait six months for it to come out. But also I'm a huge trailer nerd and I'm not personally sensitive to spoilers. Absolutely skip that trailer especially since you don't have to wait six months. If you like trailers though, check it out after the third movie because it's a good trailer.

Cory Stanish

Wait, so you're telling me Back to the Future is a bunch of bullshit?

Cory Stanish

Yeah in the mid-80s VHS was really beginning to overtake movie theaters as the way to watch porn. But even then, mostly you had to rent pornos from a sketchy, curtained-off backroom in the the local video store. So in small towns, you continued to have the problem of friends and neighbors seeing you browsing those shelves, or getting a glimpse of what kind of porn you like. Plus you had to take it to the counter to check it out, and the cashier could easily be someone you know.

Cory Stanish

I have always held the opinion that Tom Holland more than any other actor has Michael J. Fox energy

Cory Stanish

Making two movies at the same time has been done a few times since then... like The Matrix sequels, Lord of the Rings as mentioned, the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, Harry Potter and Twilight both filmed their last two movies in one go. Avatar 2 and 3 were filmed consecutively and they're filming 4 and 5 together. Some movies had done it a long time back, but when Back to the Future made 2 and 3 together it was practically unheard of and hadn't been done for more than 40 years

Cory Stanish

I think they probably went out of their way to present an idealized vision of 1955 for dramatic purposes and to really lean in to the nostalgia factor.

Cory Stanish

Also that was literally a Chuck Berry song Marty was playing!

Cory Stanish

I’m not sure if you noticed this, but the guy at the beginning of the movie, with the bullhorn that said Marty’s music was too loud, was actually Huey Lewis, from the rock band “Huey Lewis and the News”, and that was their song, “The Power of Love”, that Marty was playing! It was a big hit at the time that this movie came out!😊

Bernie Zwicky

Kali, great reaction as always! Something you probably didn't pick up on (at least I'm pretty sure you didn't), but when Marvin Berry (the guy who played guitar who cut his hand) made that phone call to his cousin Chuck.... ....Chuck Berry is usually credited with inventing "Rock & Roll." 😁

Matt Rowland

I checked with Google and it agreed, but I saw this in the theaters in 1985 and I am sure it was there but that may just be bad memory. I know it was never intended for there to be a part 2 otherwise they wouldn't have taken Jennifer.

Andrew Roach

It seems more like a 70s thing, though. A time when there were hardly any rules & old theaters were trying to find a way to stay in business. Over the course of the 80s, there was more public resistance, more militant parenting, & such things tended to get restricted to specialty shops. Also, by 1985 VHS rentals were becoming common. No need to sit in a theater with a bunch of weird strangers. Or, even worse in a small town like this, weird friends and neighbors.

xunegrapse

The look of 1955 is close to my childhood recollection. But the town would not be so clean. More people would be smoking & there would be cigarette butts all over the sidewalk. And misc trash in the gutters - the anti-littering campaigns hadn't started yet & public waste bins were rare. But this takes place in California, which tended to be ahead of the curve, so maybe. 1955 is the year Disneyland opened, much cleaner than the old amusement parks. Also the year the number of households with TVs passed 50%, climbing rapidly after that. I had an older cousin who had a "hope chest" like Lorraine -- a trunk for keeping clothes and other items saved for whenever the girl married.

“[Great Scott!] originated as a minced oath, historically associated with two specific "Scotts": Scottish author Sir Walter Scott [1771 to 1832] and, later, US general Winfield Scott [1786 to 1866]. …” - Wikipedia

David Olden

“To Be Continued” wasn’t in the initial theatrical release. Universal added that to the home video release.

David Olden

This is super kind, thank you!

Kali Wali

The whole reason the Part 3 trailer is possible at the end of Part 2 is because they filmed the last two films together, I am not sure if that was the first time this was done. Peter Jackson did this on a more epic scale filming all 3 LOTR films at the same time. It was also a joke when this movie ended by saying 'To Be Continued' as that was never the intention.

Andrew Roach

That would honestly be awesome to see!

Kali Wali

I'm so ready for Part II and III! I've seen a few people mention the Lone Pine Mall and laughed hysterically out loud 🤣 Definitely makes these super rewatchable because I thought I was doing a good job at watching the background, but there's soooo much packed in it! That is also next-level cameo perfection lol

Kali Wali

Lol yesss! I wish I would have watched Endgame before like a few recommended, but I just couldn't wait and I had to jump back in to see how it all concluded lol. Plus this one was a very nice break after that heaviness!

Kali Wali

Lol yes I figured that, I guess I just didn't realize that it was just out there for anyone to watch in a theatre 😂

Kali Wali

🤣🤣🤣😭

Kali Wali

I can totally see why! I can't wait to watch II and III!

Kali Wali

thank you for that!!

Kali Wali

thank you for the spoiler alert!!

Kali Wali

I can't beeeelive I missed that detail hahaha. hilarious! it's little things like that that made this one truly great and entertaining to watch

Kali Wali

Thank you for spoiler alert!!

Kali Wali

For sureeee needed this one after that week haha. Time travel stories are so fun and I love how Back to the Future absolutely nailed that balance between sci-fi logic and just pure silly adventure. And yesss, the cause and effect was so entertaining to think about during all of it! And LOL about George's punch! It was a destiny-awaiting KO 🤣🤣🤣 I actually didn't know that about the DeLorean! It truly did find its legacy here. It might've flopped as a car, but a time machine?? Yes. Perfection lol And that's actually so insane to think about! We're now further from '85 than '85 was from '55 🤯 I think it's past my bedtime lol

Kali Wali

Definitely a great break and much needed laugh haha

Kali Wali

LOL I love that you have that shirt. And very good to know! I won't be watching that trailer then lol

Kali Wali

Ahhh have the best time in Seattle! I'm so jealous 🤯✨ Omg the Twin Pines Mall to the Lone Pine Mall!!! I did not pick up on that first time around but that right there is what makes this so movie so great lol. I loved picking up on little things like that sprinkled everywhere throughout it

Kali Wali

Hahah this is a really cool point! Einstein, both the dog and the physicist are tied to time travel 🤣

Kali Wali

Ahhh makes sense haha

Kali Wali

According to the OED, Great Scott goes back to the 1850s. Doc is kinda retro.

xunegrapse

Kali, I wish everyone in the world could see your face right now, especially when you flash one of those big, beautiful smiles like in your promo.........It's lovely! 💙

james flack

I remember a lot of people saying the guy driving the jeep was Harrison Ford

JD Nevesytrof

Tom Holland mentioned in his appearance on Hot Ones that he really wanted to be this generation's "Marty McFly". As someone who was born in the 80's, I haven't stopped thinking about how apt that comparison is. Great reaction as always!

Giancarlo Gasparin

My favourite trilogy! You'll catch more little bits on the future rewatches in your own time. Such as Marty leaving 1985 at Twin Pines Mall and returning to 1985 at Lone Pine Mall lol. A couple of cameos I'd like to point out: the jeep Marty hitches to near the beginning is driven by the stunt coordinator Walter Scott. Which is funny as that's pretty much the first stunt in the movie. The judge that tells Marty that he's too darn loud, is Huey Lewis himself judging his own song 😂

KJ Gould

Now you understand why in Endgame they made a point about the time travel working differently than in Back to the Future, where you can literally alter the present by changing the past, but in Endgame of course characters explain this doesn't happen, it just creates branch timelines where things happen differently and co-exist with the original timeline, it doesn't change the original timeline. Definitely a more realistic form of time travel in Endgame, less paradoxes.

Jake Follain

I hate that I'm the first person to point this out, but yes, porn is much older than the Internet and even videotapes, so there were entire theaters just for porn

JD Nevesytrof

I'm definitely not the only person to mention this, but in Part II, STOP when you see TO BE CONCLUDED ;) Now, I better go actually watch the reaction...

JD Nevesytrof

Are you telling me that your plan to save the universe is based on back to the future?

Jim

This is such a feel-good series for me. Fun, thrilling, realistic stakes. And one of the VERY rare trilogies where the third film holds up as well as the others.

Chris Truex

SPOILER ALERT!!! There is a SPOILER trailer at the end of the next Back to the Future 2 movie. Make sure to hit the stop button, or the movie trailer will spoil everything. Awesome reaction as usual...thank you!

Jonathan

When you watch Back to the Future Part II, stop the movie as soon as you see "To Be Concluded", because what follows is a spoiler to Part III.

Will Castillo

I’m not sure if Great Scott technically originated from this but it’s where I first heard it from.

TheJoeKerr

set ups and pay offs make this movie really great. the writing is top notch. one of my favourite little details is the place where they test the Time Machine is the "Twin Pines Mall", when Marty goes back, he drives over one of them, and when he comes back to the future. it's now called "Lone Pine Mall"

Mister Lou

Yeah Doc is an iconic character for sure, one of all the all-time fun mad scientists. Kali you may know that the actor who played Marty has been dealing with Parkinson’s for over 30 years now 😔 but the way he has dealt with it is a true inspiration. Looking forward to parts 2 and 3.

Richard

Looking forward to watching this later tonight... 😃👍 FYI to avoid any spoilers when you watch BTTF2 you should stop the movie as soon as you see "To Be Concluded" at the end. Right after that it goes straight into a full trailer for BTTF3.

Tom Evans

Oh we definitely needed this one after a week of Pacific and Endgame haha. One of my favorite story categories in film has always been time travel. Even though it's so far fetched from reality, I love all the theories and how even one small change can drastically alter the course of time. So this one has always been a favorite for how light-hearted of a spin it gives to that concept I know it's very on the nose, but I love the character parallels between the present and past haha. All the quotes, one liners, and character interactions having all those similarities definitely gave it a great vibe. Oh and George's punch on Biff.... that was A PUNCH. One that's capable of completely altering the future LOL The DeLorean was so innovative for its time when it was released, but ended up being a commercial failure. So I'm glad it got its claim to fame as our favorite 4-wheeled time machine! They picked such a great car for this Also, not to make us feel old, but I realized something while watching... For us seeing this in present day, it's a bigger time jump to 1985 than it was for audiences who saw this in theaters going back to 1955 LOL

M1 Maz

Hahaha true!

Kali Wali

Is Great Scott?? from this or am I just very uncultured haha. I heard him say it and thought.. Hmm, maybe it's from this movie? But didn't want to sound silly 🤣 I saw a lot of references that I didn't realize were from this until I experienced them haha. It was really awesome finding those!

Kali Wali

This was the movie of my tween years. All the comments have said what I was going to say. I have seen it a ton of times but it was fun to revisit with you. A nice break after all the heavy handy content you have been watching this week I bet! Good to see you smile and laugh again. 😊

John A

Great reaction as usual! I wore my “Twin Pines Mall” shirt just for the occasion. Be aware that Part II ends with a trailer for Part III. So once you see “To Be Concluded”, what follows will be spoilerific.

Paul M

Glad you liked this classic movie which is so much a part of the culture it has to be referenced twice in Endgame. I imagine the Endgame writers had to guard against their audience applying BTTF time travel rules to their film. Note the guy in the gym who said that Marty’s band was “just too darn loud” was Huey Lewis. Huey Lewis released the song “The power of Love” for this movie. Also…note that the mall name went from “The Twin Pines Mall” to “The Lone Pine Mall” after Marty ran over the other pine tree in 1955. (Now if you will excuse me, I’m off to Seattle to see the shiniest crew ever assembled. )

Eric H

Another set of movies I haven't watched in such a long time. Might as well strap in and rewatch with Kali, let's see how these hold up. "Einstein has just become the world's first time traveler!" That's a nice little bit of writing, seeing as how Einstein is the one who proved that time travel to the future is actually quite possible. We understand how it works, we know how to do it, we're simply limited by the technology. Traveling back to the past, however, still seems quite impossible with our current understanding of physics.

Dude Longcouch

And now you understand why the characters in Endgame didn't get the concept of branched realities. They were thinking in terms of a single linear timeline. Looking forward to this reaction tomorrow!

The Dingo

They don’t make movies like this anymore. This movie came out 40 years ago and it’s still my favorite trilogy. There are a lot of easter eggs in each movie and so many pop culture references you may have heard but not understood where they came from until watching these. Enjoy the ride from the next 2 movies. As Doc Brown said “When this baby gets to 88 miles an hour, you’re gonna see some serious shit!” 😂
