Scott Pilgrim vs. the World | Movie Ticket Pick | Full Reaction

This one honestly felt like stepping into a time capsule straight out of 2010, which also happens to be the year I graduated High School. The visual style, music, video game-inspired aesthetic, music store trips. It hit all of those perfect nostalgic sweet spots for me! But beyond just the surface-level fun, what really stuck with me was how this movie explored the messiness of relationships in a way that was both exaggerated and deeply relatable. That awkward 18-to-24 phase, where we're still figuring out who we are while still tangled in the ghosts of past relationships, was put on display with hilarious humor and brutal honesty. Scott's battles against Ramona's exes represented the emotional baggage that we all carry and the exhausting journey of learning to let it all go and move forward.

Huge thanks to John A for making his Movie Ticket pick an awesome one! He's been patiently waiting for me to finally watch this one, and I can now 100% see why! He was absolutely right; I loved it. The film was hilarious, heartfelt, and visually stunning. Every scene felt like a love letter to my inner gaming nerd, but underneath all the style was a very deep message about self-respect, growth and love. I'll definitely be revisiting this one (so I can read all the hilarious text I missed scattered throughout it), and I can already tell it's going to be a 'good feels' favorite of mine.

The best part of that table read for me is Aubrey Plaza trying to get through Julie's censored monologue without actually saying the f-word

Cory Stanish

It really did sound like a euphemism

Cory Stanish

I would love to live in Scott Pilgrim’s world, where being good at video games means you’re actually good at dating and relationships.

Joe

And to think how many skipped over this movie when it first came out, mostly because of Michael Cera fatigue. This came out at the tail end of that period where the success of Arrested Development, Superbad, and Juno meant he was in like every other movie for a couple years and people were like "Jeez I like Michael Cera but enough already." Avatar: The Last Airbender is such a good recommendation. SUCH a good series, one of the all-time greats.

Cory Stanish

I would love to live in Scott Pilgrim world, where being good at video games means you're actually good at fighting in real life LOL

Cory Stanish

And as usual, I have FUN FACTS: Not only have Chris Evans (Lucas Lee), Brie Larson (Envy Adams), and Aubrey Plaza (Julie) all joined the MCU since this movie, Brandon Routh (Todd, the vegan) has played played TWO different DC superheroes: he was Superman in Superman Returns (2006) and played The Atom in the CW's Arrowverse DC shows. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Ramona) also played a DC superhero, The Huntress, in one of the Harley Quinn movies (and she's also in Star Wars these days, which is also cool). The rest of my fun facts comes straight from the actors' commentary track on the DVD: The most impressive thing about Mary Elizabeth Winstead's performance as Ramona is that she had a problem with her spine and she was in constant pain throughout most of the filming. She did get the problem fixed while the movie was still shooting, but only after she had to do the stunt where she fell down the stairs at the Chaos Theater and landed on her back. During the scene where Scott is making garlic bread, Kieran Culkin spontaneously just ate a raw clove of garlic. Nobody made him do this. Then he had to do it again and again to make sure all the shots matched for continuity purposes. He had to eat a bunch of them and definitely regretted it. On a similar note, in the scene with Lucas Lee where he crushed the cup of coffee in his hand before rushing to fight Scott, there's no special effects or trickery there. Chris Evans insisted on crushing an actual steaming hot cup of coffee in every take and ended up with a mildly serious burn on his hand. No one made him do it.

Cory Stanish

Love this movie! So wild and vibrant and there's so many little details to appreciate, like: I love the fact that because Scott isn't really that good a person, then his "evil twin" Nega-Scott isn't really a bad person at all and is actually really nice. The fact that his evil twin is just a chill dude says a lot about Scott! In the amp-to-amp battle against the Katyanagi Twins, the creature Sex Bob-omb summoned was the personfication of Scott's jealousy. The clue is in the color of its eyes; the "green-eyed monster" being a common euphemism for jealousy.

Cory Stanish

Aubrey Plaza. She's in Parks & Recreation, maybe you've seen her in that? She's also done a couple of Marvel things: Legion and Agatha All Along.

KJ Gould

Absolutely did. The trick now is figuring out whether other Edgar Wright films will be something you’d like given he sometimes delves into the horror/apocalypse genre (but always laced with the same great filmmaking and a lot of comedy and heart).

Ian Forbes

I feel like I've seen her in something, but I can't put my finger on it! I haven't seen that suggestion yet though so I'll have to check it out

Kali Wali

I agree! I loved how creative this one was. It felt like an awesome adventure!

Kali Wali

Yes for sure! This movie fully embraced the chaos and was entertaining from start to end 🤣 I totally agree that the fights were insanely well-choreographed! They felt like a mix of video game boss levels, anime, and comic book action all put into one epic scene. And I love that you also saw the deeper messages in those fights! That self-respect vs love moment really hit. It's such a great message within all the chaos. Scott literally had to level up in life before he could move forward, and that is so deeply relatable! It's hard to be there for someone else if you can't be there for yourself. 100% The music was such a time capsule all on it's own lol. That indie/alt-rock wave was eeeeeverything during this time. Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys, Fall Out Boy- ugh peak era 👀✨ Plus the nostalgic Zelda remix going on over their breakfast conversations lol. I gotta agree that Todd's fight was legendary!! A full-on bass battle mixed in with the hilarious vegan comments LOL. And someone mentioned that Brie Larson was actually singing during that song 🙀 Which just makes it that much more amazing. And yes hahaha I loved Chris Evans in this and seeing such a different energy coming from him! His whole over-the-top action start was hilarious and the stunt doubles made me die laughing just because of who he ends up becoming in the MCU 🤣 Glad you loved this one too!!

Kali Wali

Bahaha stoppp 🤣🤣🤣

Kali Wali

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Kali Wali

John, thank you SO much for this movie ticket pick! You were not wrong at all hyping this up as much as you did! The bread makes you fat line was so iconic bahaha. I remember thinking something similar in high school about Poptarts when my gym teacher freaked out on someone in class for eating one during breakfast 🤣 I loved this movie and you are very right- I was always meant to love it! The cast was incredible and it's so cool to see where they all ended up later on in their career. It's like a whole multiverse of future stars before they blew up haha. And that's awesome that Brie Larson was actually the one singing during her song! I'm 100% looking up that video later now! 👀 I get why this is a true cult classic. I'm pretty sure you told me, but I forgot that this was the director of Shaun of the Dead! Which makes total sense now comparing the two. His directing style is so sharp, fast-paced, and creative. I love it so much! It really feels ahead of its time in a lot of way. You definitely didn't overhype this movie at all! If anything, I'm just mad at myself for not watching it sooner. I feel like if I watched this in 2010 life would have made a lot more sense haha. Looking forward to whatever secret tidbit you're sending in the DMs! Sorry for the delay- I ended up coming down with a bit of a cold over the weekend that I'm still trying to shake. I blame the crazy up/down weather we've had haha. And hopefully I can get to Hot Fuzz sometime soon this year!

Kali Wali

Yes! I agree the energy and style was a whole vibe. I can see this being a new 'comfort movie' for when I'm looking for some laughs and entertainment while throwing on a game on a chill night haha

Kali Wali

Oh, for sure! It's such an awkward and difficult time. It really is all about 'finding yourself', but being so very lost in that process lol. I loved this movie for it's brutal honesty and not feeling like such an outcast during that time in my life. Everyone was struggling through it haha

Kali Wali

LOL are you saying she is plotting evil at that intersection 🤣🤣👀 And wow, awesome info!! I can't wait to rewatch with this information now hahaha

Kali Wali

Ahhh, I gotta watch that!!

Kali Wali

I was born in 92 so I'm right there with you haha! But I can see how growing up in Toronto would make this movie connect 10x more. I can definitely see why people in that age range hold this movie close because it's so true and brutally honest of how we all felt during that time of our life. I didn't have much snow going on where I was haha, but I can totally relate to the bars and seeing bands that are way too loud and mostly bad 🤣 But they are your friends so their "secret shows" mean so much so you gotta support them. And that's awesome about the song drop!!

Kali Wali

So manyyy! It was so fun seeing them in these roles haha

Kali Wali

I didn't' realize this was the same director as Shaun of the Dead! Now the style makes so much more sense and clicks. I loved it! Thank you for pointing that out lol And yeah, typical trying to figure life out but also being a total jerk phase for Scott and Ramona lol. I love how honest and open they were about it. Scott didn't realize any of his faults until they came crashing down on him, and he had to re-do the entire final boss level to get it right lol.

Kali Wali

This movie was definitely a whole visual storytelling experience! So much fun!! I hope you enjoyed it ✨

Kali Wali

I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!!

Kali Wali

love your reaction and also love that girl who censors herself, if you wanna see more of her, I highly suggest "Safety Not Guaranteed"

Mister Lou

Great movie. There are so many movies that attempt to bring video games to life, it is so creative to see life turned into a video game.

Joe

I mean, if we are making a list; The Spot (Jason Schwartzman)

Joe

This movie has such a stacked cast and people going in blind never expect it, which always makes reactions a blast. One actor who stands out to me is Mae Whitman as Roxy, who I'm a fan of because she also voiced Katara in the show Avatar: The Last Airbender. Not sure if you've ever watched that, Kali, but if you haven't, that would be an incredible series for a reaction. It's a masterpiece, and I've never known a single person who watched it and didn't love it. Probably the greatest animated series ever produced, period. It's 3 seasons with 61 total episodes, about 22 minutes each, so it's not crazy long and would be easy to do a few episodes each week.

Dude Longcouch

Sometimes we all just need a good old rollercoaster of a movie that doesn't take itself too seriously and is just fun haha. I really love how well choreographed all the fights are too! And under all that craziness is a lot of very relatable undertones to stuff we deal with. I think one of my favorites was after his death and respawn, using the power of self-respect over the power of love to beat Gideon. Since really, if you're not able to fight off your own demons and love yourself, it's hard to love and care for another Loved the trip down memory lane too! The music was amazing, and I definitely had an indie / alt-rock phase around this time. Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys, Fallout Boy, etc haha I think of all the Ex fights, the one against Todd was my favorite. I used to play bass guitar a bit (probably was around this era actually lol), so I love a good bass-off and hearing those things play solo haha. And also the whole vegan arc was amazing LOL. And Brie Larson was awesome performing on stage too! Chris Evans comes close second. He was just soooo funny as an angsty over the top action hero hahaha

M1 Maz

"Oh no! His love sword!" I cannot explain to you how hard I died laughing, I can't believe you said that hahahaha

Dude Longcouch

I'm in Lesbians with this movie.

Dude Longcouch

"Bread makes you fat?!?!" I have never been happier that I was right to know that you would love this movie. You have very young actors at the time that went on too much bigger things. Captain America, Captain Marvel, a version of Superman (Todd) , Anna Kendrik (Scott's sister) who has been any many movies now, Aubrey Plaza (Julie, "Has Issues") btw she got her big breakout in Parks and Rec TV show playing opposite of Christ Pratt (Starlord), Kieran Culkin(Wallace) (who just won and Oscar this year.) Ellen Wong (Knives) that starred in the Netflix show Glow. Also, the song from Metric called "Black Sheep" was sung by Brie Larson for the movie. You can find the video on YouTube if you so choose but that's actually her singing. This movie never ceases to make me happy, and I have watched it embarrassing number of times. Edgar Wright(Director) is so underrated imo. I hope to get you eventually to watch Hot Fuzz, and Baby Driver someday down the road. His directing style is so creative and off the charts. This movie didn't do well when it came out mostly due to the way it was marketed. Over the years it has become a cult classic and some people admittedly dislike the style but there are so many of us that love it. It was great to see you laughing all the way through. Again, it warms my heart to know you loved it, I got worried I might of over hyped it. At least now I won't "pester" you about it anymore. Except for 1 more little thing, I will share in the DM's about this movie. I had a lot of fun, thanks again!

John A

I forgot about them!

The Dingo

Another successful Movie Ticket Pick that was supposed to say. I hate typing on an iPad. Dang I bet I’m going to miss some cool stuff next week. 😔

Richard

One of my go-to fun movies whenever I'm in a funk. The energy and style are just so great in this movie. Great reaction, glad you enjoyed it!

Benjamin Bradtke

Teenage angst and awkwardness can be very relatable when done right. No matter how “cool” we were in school, probably almost everyone has had those experiences when they were the new kid, or the odd one out, bully target, clique target, etc. I moved to a different state between 6th and 7th grade and it was definitely tough not knowing any of the kids, trying to fit in, all the while going through adolescence 😂. Another successful Movie Ticket pick!

Richard

You know the cat likes to sit there because he's (she's?) waiting to see an accident in that busy intersection. That's how cats are. Bringing it back to the movie, Beck wrote Sex Bob-omb's songs. Once you know that you can't un-hear it.

Lemurian Jones

I'm so glad you enjoyed this! It's one of my favourite movies and such a good comfort film. If you have the time, I highly recommend checking out a pandemic-era table read they did of the entire script with just about all of the original cast. You can find it on YouTube under "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Cast Reunion Table Read" ... it's crazy seeing Chris Evans just drop into the Lucas Lee character like it's nothing :D

Justin

While we're at it; the Punisher (Thomas Jane) and Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)

Lemurian Jones

Oh! One of our favourite songs was called 'Anthems for a 17-Year Old Girl" and its in this movie when Scott goes to talk to Knives after the BotB. Broken Social Scene, and they were such a vital part of the lifeline of the city back then.

David

I'm so glad you watched this movie! I was born in 1990 and grew up in Toronto and this movie is such a vital part of my life. I feel like everyone I know born between 1985 and 1995 holds this movie so dear to their heart. Those nights of going to bars and seeing bands and walking through snow covered streets and random parties are all too familiar. Waiting in the snow until 1am to meet your hero, or going to a party of 100 people hoping to talk to a crush; that's what it was like. The movie is a video game, but it's also such a snapshot of a time and place. I love it.

David

Ah yes. Evil Captain America (Chris Evans), Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), and Superman (Brandon Routh). Good times

The Dingo

So many great culture references in this movie, brilliantly directed by Edgar Wright (who you've seen direct Shaun of the Dead). Edgar Wright also half directed and wrote the first Ant-Man movie before having to walk away based on creative differences, but his fingerprints are still all over it. I love that this movie doesn't hide the fact Scott is a jerk who has treated others terribly. He's our protagonist, but he has to make amends before he can be considered a hero by the end.

KJ Gould

Such a great film. Edgar Wright is such an amazing visual storyteller, never forgetting to pay so much detail to sound and music along the way. Can’t wait to rewatch today!

Ian Forbes

Yes! Have been waiting for this one all week!! I knew you would love it! One of my favourite movies.
