The Pacific | Part Eight | Full Reaction

This one was rough. Seeing Basilone finally find love and happiness with Lena, only to lose it all so suddenly left me feeling completely drained and heartbroken. The way that it was directed with the straight cut to the very moment Basilone dies on the beach at Iwo Jima was brilliant, but incredibly intense. The way his story ends feels so unfair, and it made me reflect on the real people behind these stories. The ones who gave everything and didn't get the chance to come back home. And also, who they left behind.

Yes, totally. This episode was so heavy because it spent so much time showing us Basilone's struggle with wanting to not leave the service because it's all he has known. But also struggling because he is getting older and feeling the weight of it all. I'm guessing that's why he went from 2 ladies in one night, to actually pursuing Lena and wanting to slow down. But he still couldn't just accept his time in the Marines was over. He couldn't walk away the hero everyone else called him, because he didn't see himself that way. Not when he witnessed everyone around him die that day he became a hero. His friends. His Marines. It's so sad.. His speech in the bunk is probably one of my favorites from this entire miniseries. So powerful. So intelligent. And you said it best- Respect that only really gets developed from someone who has been there, done that. I also love your take that he finally got to let it all out during that speech. Because YES. It definitely seems so with how powerful it was delivered.

Thank you for the pronunciation lol! It was said so many different ways that I wasn't sure which way was correct anymore. And yeah, I talked in my intro about how the book bothered me. Couldn't remember the CO's name, so I had to google the name. Then it all made sense.. I also totally agree about that being such a beautifully heavy image. Basilone's body. Scattered amongst all the other Marines that lost their lives that day. I completely missed the detail about all the others being face down.. Very striking, indeed. Thank you for sharing!

Peleliu: pay-lay-LOO A.A. Haldane was the CO of Sledge's company who was killed by a sniper on Peleliu. He was the one that talked to Sledge several times. One of the most striking images in the series to me is when they pan up from Gunny Basilone's body. All the other dead Marines around him are lying face down, but he is facing up. I don't know why that is so impactful to me, but it is.

Man this was a tough one.... Getting to see so much of Basilone's life back home only to get catapulted right into the tragedies of the war was so gut wrenching. And I think also just further humanizes all the soldiers we're seeing and makes us remember that all of the brave men dying around him on that shore also have their own stories, and their own people they're leaving behind. Who's stories never will get told Also, have to say that Basilone's speech to the soldiers in the bunks is soooo powerful and gives me chills every time. I feel like ever since he's been home, he's been holding so much in. And that moment was when he finally let a lot of it out. Especially showing respect for the enemy. Respect that only really gets developed for someone like him who's been there, and seen it all
