Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope | Full Reaction

I am SO excited to finally begin my journey through these beloved films. And right from the opening crawl, I was immediately swept up into a world that felt vast, mysterious, and full of heart. Every character, from Luke's hopeful spirit to Leia's fierce (and spicy!?) determination and Han Solo's rugged charm, felt instantly iconic. I'm not sure if it's just because I know how loved this story is, or because of how timeless it all felt, but I could feel the weight of the journey the characters were beginning, and it pulled me in deeper with every scene!

Now that I've finished A New Hope, I honestly can't wait to keep going. I already feel super connected to the story and the characters! This really does feel like the start of something incredibly special. See you all in the next adventure!

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope | Full Reaction

Worth the sub to watch this whole reaction with you. I can tell R2-D2 really touched your heart. Whenever the middle wheel was extended and R2 was moving it was simply an empty robot, however R2 was otherwise played by small person Kenny Baker and followed directions to "look excited" by wiggling and bouncing around. Kenny exclaimed that occasionally the entire crew would break for lunch and forgot to get him out of R2 ! This vision was only in Lucas' head and he remains today disappointed with the results on screen. Nobody else believed in him. The production was rushed causing Lucas to suffer heart problems and lose a marriage. The final cut was terrible and required his then wife to moonlight as editor to ramp up the pace of the thing, and after filming none of the revolutionary special effects had been started. None of the sounds existed and the music had not been written. Nobody knew what they had. The only “hype” had come from some self promotion Lucas had the foresight to do at some conventions (which were NOTHING like conventions today). The FX were being shot right up to the closing moments, and they only had a few shots for the original trailer. Thankfully there was a deal with Marvel for a series of comic books which young fans (like myself) ravenously consumed alongside a novelised version of the film which sold out 500k copies. However the industry was sceptical, and in a time before multiplexes, only 40 theatres agreed to take the film on it’s May release. And the only reason they took it was that they agreed to Star Wars as a bolt on to FOX’s release The Other Side of Midnight which theatres wanted. But somehow it all came together. Audiences were stunned, and wowed, and spellbound by this simple heroic space story which defied all conventions and broke every mould of movie making revolutionising cinema forever. Star Wars created the summer blockbuster and went on to make $3,047,314,171 (adjusted) worldwide. I'd recommend the awesome Empire of Dreams documentary (free on YouTube) and the TV series Light and Magic which is the fascinating story of the behind the scenes adventures. Personally my fave character has always been Chewbacca. Loyal, fierce, and gives great hugs. I went to the Secret Cinema Star Wars event years back which had interactive events around the Star Wars universe. Whilst sitting outside a bar I saw Chewie walk past about ten feet from me. I excitedly leapt up and yelled "CHEWIE !" at the top of my voice. He turned, roared at me and pumped his arms in the air. Easily my top nerd moment of all time.
