Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back | Full Reaction

This film felt a bit deeper, darker, and far more personal than the optimistic and adventurous 'New Hope'. Suddenly, the stakes weren't just galactic, they were emotional and traumatizing. Every character walked a road of personal transformation- Luke chasing purpose, Leia trying to hold everything together, and Hans becoming a bit more tender hearted.

And that plot twist?? I felt the air leave the room. It felt like one of those moments that have you questioning everything- the entire foundation of everything you thought you knew. And even though it's been referenced a million times in pop culture (yes, I've definitely heard I AM YOUR FATHER referenced many times haha), nothing could prepare me for how raw and real it felt in context. It's rare for a story to trust its audience to sit in the discomfort of not knowing what lurks beyond. And I can't wait to see what's next. See you all there!

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back | Full Reaction

The Empire Strikes Back is a perfect movie. Asides that is from a short spell when Chewie is being tortured in Cloud City and all you get is wookie bellows for four minutes straight. Don’t get me wrong… Chewie is my fave Star Wars character of all time, but this gives me flashbacks to the Star Wars Christmas Special. And nobody wants that… The Empire Strikes back is an extremely economical movie. There are two plots that the film covers off ; Luke goes to Dagobah to be trained in the Jedi arts by Yoda. Han and Leia try to escape Darth Vader in a broken spaceship. And that is it. We introduce Lando and Yoda, two very important and pivotal characters. We start with the big battle which very nicely subverts the expectations that this will just be following the same beats as A New Hope. We know, and love by now all of the returning main characters, each of which has an important arc to follow in Empire. Leia and Han fall in love. Luke starts his path towards becoming a Jedi Knight. And Darth Vader dropped the biggest most sensational bomb ever uttered in a fantasy/ sci-fi movie, that he is Luke’s father. Empire runs at 2hrs and 4min. But watching it feels so much quicker. It moves at a fair old clip, mainly again due to front loading the big battle at the beginning. Lucas (thankfully) stepped away from the director’s chair asking his friend, teacher and mentor Irvin Kershner to step up to the plate. Kersh was naturally hesitant. No sequels had ever done better than the first film, and Star Wars was the most successful movie of all time. Kershner had mostly directed smaller romantic movies. And it was his tender touch that added the first and most realistic feeling romance to the Star Wars universe. Empire is both relentlessly dark, and incredibly uplifting. This juxtaposition most clear in Luke’s training on Dagobah. “I’m not afraid.” - “You will be. You will be.” The vision in the cave was in my nightmares as a child. “For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes. Even between the land and the ship.” THIS This was how I grew up viewing the Force. As childish as it seems, this was what went through my mind as I imagined myself as a child growing up to be a Jedi. This is all that you need to know to understand the Force. And this single scene has more gravitas, more emotive resonance than any that came in any Star Wars film after (matched only by Luke looking at the twin suns on Tatooine in New Hope). Empire is even Threepio’s best film. The gags between him and Solo from the opening on Hoth right up to when they arrive on Cloud City are sublime, as is the razor sharp writing between Solo and Leia. “I AM NOT A COMMITTEE !!!” Star Wars episode V: The Empire Strikes Back is a perfect film. It is the best Star Wars film. It is the best film ever made.

I will absolutely be watching Rogue One! I can already tell I'm going to love this universe, and I'd love to explore all parts of it that I can :) Thanks for checking! I'm also happy to hear you've loved rewatching these with me!! ✨ See you in the next one

very sorry if it has been said/discussed already, and I feel like.. there's no way no one evoked it but just in case, I see you did not include "Rogue One" in your list of star wars movie and.. I feel like it would be a very good idea to do so, it's a very "full cycle moment" movie.. and arguably a very good SW movie in and of itself. :x this being said it is so refreshing to go through those movies again, it has been a long time since I watched them and they're still so enjoyable even if dated.. thanks for the journey!

Hahaha I love that so much!! 🤣😂 I can't wait to dive deeper into this universe with you all. These first two films already have me hooked on what's next! The twists and turns in this one were incredible and leave me with sooo many questions. See you in the next one!

The look on your face when you saw a part of Vader's scarred head and when Vader said Luke was his son were worth the price of admission. Can't wait to see the rest of your Star Wars journey. Btw, May the 4th be with you. When my wife and I were deciding on names for our son we settled on Luke because of the the Bible book. I didn't even think of the Star Wars connection until the next day. He is 10 now and when he decides to get unruly I say to him "Luke, I am your father. You must listen to me" in my best Vader voice. Of course he and just rolls his eyes at me.
