Battlestar Galactica | S1 E4 | Full Reaction

It said "To Be Continued..." so I continued haha. Surprise on two episode this week even though I told you all I wouldn't start that until next week :)

"Act of Contrition" surprised me. Not because of what happened (though the abrupt ending definitely left me shaken), but because of how quietly heavy it was. Guilt and grief weighed this episode down. And Kara? She's been such a huge force of nature, but here we saw a completely different side of her. The cracks in her Godly armor. Not in a way that weaken her. But in a way that makes her that much more real.

I felt a lot while watching this. And even though it is a military sci-fi show at its core, it never forgets to show that these are people. Hurting, haunted, trying their best under impossible pressure. The last few minutes of this episode left me holding my breath and I had to immediately queue up the next one. See you there!

One of my favorite acted scenes of the whole show is Starbuck's confession to Adama. You can just see the pain and rage just boiling behind Adama's eyes. And that very quiet, "walk out of this cabin while you still can," was absolutely chilling. You can see it just broke her. It hurts more from him because she does see him as a father figure. Not that she didn't care about Lee when she confessed to him, but his rejection wouldn't hit her as hard as the Commander's. Hate that I missed your reactions last week, but catching up now!

My husband used to race late model stock cars and YES always, ALWAYS check those straps!

Let that be a lesson, folks - ALWAYS CHECK YOUR RATCHET-STRAPS! When I was working nuclear security, I had a friend who got seriously injured / maimed by a microwave, of all things, that was ratchet-strapped to a shelf in a gun tower. The strap failed, the entire shelf assembly collapsed, and the microwave landed on my friend's arm. You gotta check those straps regularly and toss or repair any frays!

One of the things that I really love about this series so far, which you also mentioned in your description, is how complex, flawed, and *real* these characters feel. So much so that we're only on episode 4 and already having episodes completely themed around personal backstories, and the weight that is being carried. You mentioned something in your outro that really got me thinking, about Lee and Adama's reactions to Starbuck's confession. With Lee obviously being more understanding, and I guess you could say nice. It's easier for Starbuck to take, but it really didn't help her with anything. She continued carrying that guilt, and it was impacting her decision making. Yet Adama, with a raw and unfiltered response, made her feel the magnitude of what she had done. And it was harder for her to take, but it set her on the right path Also have to quickly mention how much I loved your intro on this one! You summarized the themes of contrition so well and how they related to all the characters and situations in this series. Thank you for always taking the time to share your thoughts in depth through the intros / outros!
