Battlestar Galactica | S1 E8: Flesh and Bone | Full Reaction

(Episode 9 following shortly behind this upload a little later tonight!)

This episode was psychologically and spiritually loaded. It honestly left me feeling a bit unsettled. It slowed everything down and trapped us in a room with Starbuck and Leoben. Truth, power, and identity were all brought to the interrogation table.

Leoben's presence was very eerie and not just because he is a Cylon. But because he spoke with such a chilling calm. He doesn't resist her physical interrogation. Instead, he dismantles Kara mentally and emotionally.

What made this episode so intense and interesting for me was how deeply it echoed themes from the Book of Genesis. Especially the story of the flood. Leoben almost takes on the role of a prophet (perhaps even a false one?) and spits out cryptic warnings about destruction and renewal. His actual words about a "great storm" and "cleansing fire" immediately reminded me of the flood narrative. A judgement meant to wash away corruption and sin just to start again. And a lot like Noah, Leoben claims to see what is coming. But this time there is no true path to salvation. There is only destruction.

This episode made me question everything. Who deserves mercy? What is truth? Can faith survive in such a broken world? I feel like in a lot of ways, Leoben isn't warning us of the flood. That already happened. Now he is asking (or even warning?) humanity if they are ready for what happens after.

Everything is eventually given an explanation in this show ( for the most part ). Some people don't like the explanation, but it is all explained. It's one of the great things about this show, all the pieces will fit together to form a complete story by the end, and continue on into the next TV series "Caprica", which is a prequel to BSG. What is explained in BSG and shown in Caprica is really fascinating, and it kills me not to be able to talk about it. Each new reactor speculates on what this is all about, and it's a lot of fun hearing their predictions and interpretations. It's a hell of a ride with a lot of twists and turns, but it all has purpose. I'm loving your take on it and your reactions ! Thanks for sharing and keep them coming ! Fun fact: You can't really waste water in a ship like that, anything that is spilled evaporates and is reclaimed by the air processors. This is true for the International Space Station too, which recycles 98% of the water from breath, sweat, showers, and urine.

I find it interesting that Starbuck, who is far from innocent and angelic, is the one who prays the most. Sometimes just a casual conversation with the gods (“Lords, it’s Kara Thrace…I’m running a little low on O2 and I could use a lucky break.”—and then she immediately finds a partially dead Cylon raider she can fly off the planet), or sadly sincere (her prayer for Lee Adama when she thought he was dead in the miniseries). She prays in private, without reservation. Whatever her motivation, I liked that she prayed for Leoben’s soul here.

I think this is one of the better episodes in season 1, Def gives a lot of information and stuff to ponder. Mary McDonnell is sooooo good as Laura Roslin! (If you want a movies of hers to react to that’s also coincidentally a War movie I highly recommend Dances with Wolves, I think you’d really enjoy it). Sadly no interesting trivia for this episode.

I'm going to especially love hearing what you have to say about episodes like this considering your background! Please, don't feel that you need to hold back. I've watched a lot of people watch this show, but if they had any religious background, it was something from childhood that they preferred left in the past.
