I have been excited to sit and watch Solo ever since I saw this movie title on the release order list back when I began the original trilogy! Han immediately became one of my favorite characters after he hit Leia with the "I know" 😂 And this movie was no disappointment to his legacy!
This was a story about outlaws. No jedi. No Sith (well almost hahaha). Just a wholehearted tale of an outlaw dealing with smugglers, betrayals, and broken loyalties. Making some love and friends along the way. This story had Han written all over it!
Alden Ehrenreich was thrown into iconic shoes and actually delivered!? I was prepared for a little disconnection at first, but there was none. From the first scene of him hotwiring a speeder to the smile on his face as he whisked away in the Falcon. All of it felt real! His heart, cocky smile, and bluffs under pressure were everything and anything I could have expected from a Solo film.
I'm also still sitting with Qi'ra (I personally love Emilia Clarke and was SO pleasantly surprised to see her pop up in this one!). Her character was so layered and heartbreaking. The chemistry between her and Han was so real and true. But ultimately the world shaped her into something so foreign and so dark that even Han couldn't begin to think it. And that final scene? I think I literally gasped out loud, several times lol.
All in all, I loved this one! It felt like a grounded break away from all the mythical space for a minute. It made moments of quiet connection and subtle character shine through the screen again. And for me, that's what Star Wars has always been about. Found families. The cost of survival. And the way we all become the stories we tell ourselves.
