Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl | Full Reaction

Okay. I absolutely get why this movie became a huge cultural moment. The swashbuckling adventure, the unlimited quotable moments, the magic and mystery. It's exactly the kind of story that makes you want to throw on a pirate hat and run blindly into the next big adventure!

Captain Jack Sparrow was pure chaos wrapping in charm and swagger. And surprisingly underneath all of that, was a moral compass lead by his heart. Elizabeth and Will's arcs gave me that classical romance feel (with a super satisfying ending), and the cursed crew of the Black Pearl made the fantasy feel dangerously fun!

By the time the credits hit me, I felt like I'd just stepped off the Black Pearl myself. Windblown and grinning with the salty sea still in the air. I can't to dive into the next one with you all next week! This feels like the perfect way to wrap up summer!

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl | Full Reaction

Norrington was always a good an honorable man. Let's not forget that he was willing to jump after Elizabeth when she fell in the water. Could've gotten himself killed. He always cared for Elizabeth. And I love that the writers didn't turn him into a villain just because he was Will's competition. Now when it comes to the villains - they are absolutely incredible. Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa is just as great in this as Johnny Depp. He plays more the conventional pirate. But he has such a presence. Johnny and Geoffrey have incredible chemistry, their scenes are my favorites in the movie. His last line "I feel....cold." is very tragic. Johnny Depp of course is absolutely brilliant. He created one of the most unique characters in cinema.

I think you may like Johnny Depp's 1999 movie, "Sleepy Hollow" based on Washington Irving's story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

I need to check out some of them for sure!

There's some really great Johnny Depp films. Edward Scissor Hands, Cry Baby, Donnie Brasco, Blow, What's Eating Gilbert Grape to name a few.

Entertaining reaction as always, Kali! I'm glad that you now understand why this film became such an expected cultural phenomenon! Other commenters have already noted the fact that the Pirates of the Caribbean originated as a Disneyland ride. You can read more details here: https://disneyland.disney.go.com/attractions/disneyland/pirates-of-the-caribbean/ According to the website, the ride opened on March 18, 1967. I didn't ride it immediately — given that I was only 3 ½ years old! — but as a SoCal resident, I certainly experienced it within the next few years. It was a water ride that began in a simulated swamp, complete with blinking fireflies, and then went underground through a maze of various pirate-y scenes. I remember being scared the first time because I was pretty young, but the ride was so magical that it quickly became one of my favorites parts of a trip to Disneyland! You'll notice from the pictures on the website that one scene in the movie is an almost literal recreation of one part of the ride where some captured pirates try to entice a guard dog to bring them the keys to their prison cell. The scene was such a delightful homage for me and others who had ridden the original ride! In 2007, the MythBusters episode "Pirate Special 2" tested whether it was actually possible to walk underwater while breathing the air trapped in an upside-down rowboat. SPOILER: Unfortunately for us fans, the myth was busted, disproving what seemed like a very clever ruse by Captain Jack Sparrow! (See: https://mythresults.com/episode92) Looking forward to the next couple of entries in this series! 😁

Loved your reaction! Fun Fact: Johnny Depp's first movie debut was in the original "Nightmare on Elm Street" (1984) so it shocks me this is your first Depp flick. Personally, I would say this has the most iconic music score of any movie besides Jurassic Park. When the swashbuckling music plays I want to pick up a plastic sword and duel my 12 year old nephew (his mom forbids it and I respect that). But you can't tell me that music just hypes you up and you want that on beat clangs where no one gets hurt. And Depp just makes me think of a college student showing up late to a job interview. And the job was service and he nailed it.

Fun reaction Kali! I been a minute since I’ve watched this one. Still holds up! Iconic role by Johnny Depp! I think I heard Johnny Depp say Capt. Jack Sparrow’s mannerisms were partly based on Keith Richards from The Rolling Stones I think Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbosa was excellent as well! And to think this film was inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland! 😄 Looking forward to the next one!

I have a weird compliment for your YouTube videos. If I find myself having a hard time falling asleep making a short playlist with some of your videos helps quite a bit. The combination of some of my favorite movies and your soothing voice is like virtual melatonin.
