NYC Blog #29 - Standup Comedy

Everyone knows that Broadway shows are intrinsically New York. But so is stand-up comedy. And stand-up comedy in the city comes in all shapes and sizes. They range anywhere from free to $$$.

Free

The free ones are usually hosted by a local community and attendance is around 20 or less people. The attendance will depend on how well the planners advertised the event. The type of comics that perform here are either new and are trying to get their feet wet, or a bit more experienced but want to try out new jokes or ideas.

$10 to $20

In these shows you are guaranteed to have at least a couple veteran comics in the mix with the rest having at least 1-2 years of stand-up experience. This is where veterans get their practice to polish up for highly paid shows.

$30 to $50

You are guaranteed to laugh. But the venue might have a two drink minimum policy (meaning you have to buy at least a couple of drinks while you’re there)

$100+

You are probably going to Madison Square Garden or a similar theater to see a comic you saw on Netflix. Obviously, the more famous the comic, the more expensive the ticket. To give you an idea, orchestra tickets for Jerry Seinfeld are at $250 and bleeder seats are at $115.

They put me in the room... and her card was on the table... I didn't even think to ask until it was too late.

That's nice of them to refund your purchase.

Double check when you check in. Some clubs have more than one room. I went to see Liz Miele at Govenors and they put us in the startup comic room. They were good about it, refunded me immediately once I let them know but it doesn’t hurt to double check… especially since I covered the minimum for 4 people.

Gotcha. Still that's amazing!

Ok to be fair it likely wasn't the Tonight Show as we don't usually watch that either, but it was definitely one of the late night talk shows!

Haha. I've been there a couple of times, but I don't watch the Tonight Show often enough to notice.

Yes, we've been to the Cellar many times - and then heard the exact same jokes in their next TV interview 😂

Nice tip! Have you tried this?

Or hack the system: Comedy Cellar tickets are $25 and you can sit just feet from the stage and watch big name comedians rehearse the material they have planned for the Tonight Show the next week!
