Character Vlog: 86 Mahi Mahi

Joey finally addresses the consistent issue with Mahi Mahi running out.

BTW, if you didn't know, "86" is code for running out of a menu item. It can also mean a customer has been kicked out. Example: "We're 86 Mahi Mahi" (meaning "We're out of Mahi Mahi") or "You're 86'd buddy. Get out." (meaning "You have to leave and don't come back.")

Also, there are MANY theories as to the origin of the term "86," but none of them have ever been definitely proven to be THE true origin. But no matter how many times I say this, there will be people INSISTING that their version is THE true version. I think people believe the story they were taught at their first restaurant or bartender job.

I always thought 86d came from the military but most slang doesn't have one definitive origin. My linguistics mentor always would tell me that stuff just gets popular and spreads- often from multiple sources. And I love when shit just comes from the ppl 💜

Lmao! My BF and I were just talking about this... About how it is better to run out than have too much, because if it is continuously sold out then that means it is a crazy popular menu item and basically feeds the demand for it by making people think it is the best item on the menu since it's always gone quickly. I made mention of this thought to him and he told me that as a kitchen manager he always slightly under ordered the big ticket items. Both to undercut loss if it wasn't as busy a weekend as usual, and to help drive demand for it every other night of the week. I also think that if you get your large order Thursday night/ Friday morning in preparation for the weekend rush, then if it runs out halfway through the week people have to wait for the weekend dinner when prices are more.
