Young Deb AI Apology

Hello, friends. Drew here. I recently shared an AI image of "Deb if she were young" that was messaged to me. It was pointed out in the comments that this type of image is taking jobs from real artists. I definitely agree that AI does that. Andrea and I have even turned down a lucrative brand deal that promoted such professional use of AI. I thought (incorrectly) that this type of use - a fun "what if" picture of young Deb - was an exception. I'm sorry for my misjudgment. I take responsibility for the error, and I appreciate those of you who pointed it out and truly apologize for letting you down.

But it is an exception! Your intent was to show us a funny picture. It’s not like you chose the AI art over an artist’s work. If that were the case, I’d feel differently. Plus, I’ve seen you give shoutouts to your very talented artist fans.

Would you have paid someone to make the image if not for Ai? No? Then you did nothing wrong. If you used the image for merch or would have otherwise paid an artist for it, then yes it's wrong. Ai art for personal use or to share with your community IS fine, just as long as it stays for personal use that isn't monetized. Ai has a place in the world, it's not going away. Shaming people for interacting in any way with Ai won't make it go away. People need to come to terms with the fact that Ai exists and is a tool that can and will be used more going forward. I'm an artist, and I have long accepted this fact. I even use Ai sometimes to help me plan out ideas before I actually draw them. Like any tool, Ai isn't the problem. It's how people use it.

Thank you. I want to see AI highly regulated, or better yet, banned.
