RJ Rambles about getting fit

Hey everybody! Last week has been pretty exhausting, honestly! I'm trying to remember everything that happened during it.

Okay, so on Tuesday, we went to a new hiking trail. At first, I was not super impressed by it, because it was at a nature museum that you had to pay to enter, then in the back they had a few hiking trails. When we got there, I was like, man this isn't going to be what I want it to be, because the beginning of the trails are all paved and there was a little zoo of local animals and stuff.

But, after a bit, the trail went off into the woods and we almost immediately saw a group of like 6 deer. Then the trail went off on a boardwalk over a wetlands area and it was so cool and we saw hundreds of turtles and ducks and geese. Then it turned and went through this cedar grove that was just beautiful and I loved it.

So that was the first trail. It was really nice. There was still one other trail that we wanted to go on, so we took a little break, then started down the second trail. It started off really cool. Went by this old sycamore tree that had been there since the early 1800s and was enormous. Then it kept going.

We probably should have turned back when it crossed a stream, but we kept going. We probably should have turned back when it crossed a broken stone bridge, but we kept going. We probably should have turned back when it became completely muddy and we had to start walking on the side of the trail, but we kept going. Then we hit a spot where the trail became a creek of about ankle deep water. And the choice was to just press through the last half mile and finish, or go back and retrace our 1.5 miles that it took to get there.

So the last half mile, we walked through cold ankle-deep water. Which was an experience. Wet socks. Wet shoes. Our hiking gear all dries pretty fast, but not really fast enough. When we got to the car, everything was soaked. We were about an hour away from home, and didn't bring a change of clothes. We ended up going to a local place and buying new socks and shoes, so we could go out to eat with dry clothes before heading home.

It was a really fun experience and it taught us to always have an extra pair of clothes in the car. I'll include some pictures here.

Okay, so that was Tuesday.

Wednesday, I joined a gym and I got a personal trainer. I've been talking for a couple of years about losing weight and getting fit. I have been trying, with the hiking and attempting to eat better. But during the winters especially, I feel myself slacking. It's cold and I don't want to go out - one excuse or another. I feel like the major thing about having a personal trainer is having somebody to be accountable to. So, right now, I don't really feel like working out. And if it was just me doing things on my own, I don't know that I would go work out today. But I told my personal trainer that I would be there, so I'm going to be there.

We had our first training session on Thursday and she kinda kicked my butt. I pushed myself a little too hard and almost passed out, then threw up a little after the workout. It was rough. But I felt good afterwards. Felt like I accomplished something. I felt my muscles strengthening.

Friday and Saturday, I was really sore from that workout. My biceps and my inner thighs mostly. But it was a good sore. I didn't hate it. It just reminded me that I did hard things. By Sunday, I felt pretty recovered.

And today, she's going to kick my butt again. I'm both excited and nervous about it. I'm going to be seeing her on Mondays and Fridays, and I'm going to get fit this year. I have a few goals that I want to hit this year, and I think she'll help me hit them. I'm pretty pumped up about it.

Anyway, other than that, I've been playing a few games - Age of Empires 4, Persona 3 Reload, Steam World Build. All really fun so far. I also gave Starfield a shot, but it crashed on me before I even got through the tutorial section at the beginning... so I guess I won't be playing it.

And I saw a movie called Freeway from the 90s with Reese Witherspoon and Kiefer Sutherland, and I loved it. I couldn't believe I'd never heard of the movie before. It's so good, if you like sleazy tarantino-esque stuff. It kinda blew me away a bit.

Alright, that's all I got for today. Time to get to work. Hope you all have a great week! Love ya!

It's on gamepass right now, so I didn't have to pay anything to try it out, thankfully. I have heard only negative things about it, but thought I'd at least play a little. But crashing in the first ten minutes doesn't excite me much.

Avoid starfield. There's nothing of note or value in that game. And good luck on working out!

The gym is good for body AND mind. I'm going to the gym close to two years now, about two times a week. The first year just general stuff. Getting into shape. Last year I started lifting weights gaining more muscle. The pain in my right lower back is mostly gone now, and I don't have a hitch/limp anymore when getting up in the morning. It's not gone gone as in fixed, but the muscles I now have make it so that they support me. If I slack off, the pain comes back. So I guess I'm going to continue... And when I feel blue, going to the gym makes me realise that I can do stuff. Lift weights I could not lift before. See the improvement. It makes you feel good about yourself and what you achieved. Also, an article that really inspired me: https://www.oldtimestrongman.com/articles/the-iron-by-henry-rollins/ Have fun, don't give up!
